Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.5 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by gboue on 5/23/2023 & rated 88 points: Shows signs of aging. Still drinkable.
Update 5/26 - it mellowed and lost the hint of Brett initially in nose. Tastes like a cab. (443 views)
Tasted by SMWSLT on 10/25/2022 & rated 93 points: In a double blinded tasting of a dozen top end French and Californian “Rhône blends” from 1990 to 1998, the Geyserville came out on top. Despite the strong competition (eg., Beaucastel, Vieux Telegraphe) the Ridge rose to the top due to complexity, seamlessness, and shear drinkability. Yes, these were all quite different wines, but the age and “commonality of purpose” made for a delightful comparison. (679 views)
Tasted by NickA on 9/17/2019 & rated 89 points: Very happy to report positively on this venerable wine. Still alive from my perspective, but others suspected it was corked (or perhaps over the hill). Soft, ethereal and sweet, but lacks the power for greatness. (1900 views)
Tasted by JoeGr on 12/25/2018: Drinking amazingly well for a twenty five year old zin. Sadly Our last bottle. (2011 views)
Tasted by Moondog Vino on 12/24/2015 & rated 87 points: Was given a bunch of old Ridge and not sure how it was cellared over time. Probably too old for '15 but always a learning experience to open and judge old juice. Liked the softness and plum notes, but not much going on through the palate. (4106 views)
Tasted by VinCrush on 7/6/2015 & rated 87 points: Given the age, I was surprised that the fruits are still holding on. Got some nice plum and jammy tones. I do, however, feel like it's starting to get a little out of balance with a bit too much acid. That seemed to improve after a couple hours of breathing. Was certainly acceptable but probably now past its prime. (4057 views)
Tasted by dgriffin3480 on 3/9/2014 & rated 90 points: Opened quickly with big, fresh red and purple fruits wafting from the glass. Good complexity and freshness on the palate with fruit dominant and plenty of spice. (4855 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 9/28/2012: Day2. Way holding on. Dried fruit, leather, still a freshness on the palate as well. Drink to 2018. (5283 views)
Tasted by peterk on 7/17/2011 & rated 87 points: Fruit is still there - quite enjoyable, but fading. (5329 views)
Tasted by Samadhi on 4/17/2011 & rated 87 points: Older Geyserville, but still delicious. Paired well with BBQ'ed steaks. (3917 views)
Tasted by winecat9 on 11/28/2010 & rated 87 points: After the bottle tasted last January, we were not expecting much from this last bottle. Glad we waited. Seemed like a completely different wine that the previous bottle. Not for keeping any longer. (3880 views)
Tasted by cofidis2 on 9/5/2010 & rated 84 points: Simple and more zin-like than most older Geyser's. While not bad, not up to normal standards for this wine. 84 (3444 views)
Tasted by winecat9 on 1/16/2010 & rated 80 points: Unpleasant nose and faded fruit. This was not a good vintage and this wine was gone some time ago. (2648 views)
Tasted by llink on 9/12/2009: Anniversary year wine. Popped and poured. Capsule spins, and the cork is perfect, with only 1/4 inch of staining. This has been cellared by me since release in a temperature controlled cellar. Medicinal nose, showing its alcohol. The palate is resolved, with minimal tannin. The sweet fruit shows more on the plummy side, with some herbal/spice notes. Medium finish. I don't think this is going to get better, and in fact the medicinal notes are a detraction and will probably only get more pronounced as the fruit recedes. (2895 views)
Tasted by plitton on 1/3/2009: All I can remember over a busy dinner a few nights ago is that this was drinking great and showed no signs of too much bottle age. Drink through 2010. (3187 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 3/25/2008 & rated 89 points: Alluring nose of plum, cherry, leather, cigar box and a little allspice. Medium bodied with soft flavors of red currant, a little stewed plum, cedar and a touch of fennel. The finish is a little short and washed out, showing rock dust and tart cherry. Just past peak based on this bottle. (3211 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 6/4/2007 & rated 90 points: Jammy dark fruits, sappy cherry, fennel, eucalyptus and forest floor. Beautifully integrated. Silky mouthfeel with a grippy, herb infused finish. Drink soon (though it will continue to plateau for a few more years). (3396 views)
Tasted by gregg g on 11/9/2006: 17 vintages of Ridge Zinfandel, '67 & '78 Stony Hill & Dessert Wines (Campanile in Los Angeles, CA.): At first the nose seemed medicinal but with time this resolved to show earthy notes of leather and spice. The fruit is still seems to be evolving with some darker fruits beginning to show secondary flavors. Again, this wine like many tonight, showed solid structure and nice length on the finish. (5035 views)
Tasted by sol on 2/10/2006 & rated 94 points: Powerful nose of cloves, allspice, dark fruits, earth. Excellent mouthfeel and a smooth finish. I wouldn't say this is in decline, but I'd drink up in the next near or so, as it may be close. (4025 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 9/11/2003 & rated 90 points: DEEP BERRIES, RASPBERRIES, CHERRIES AND A TOUCH OF LICORICE IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR. MEDIUM LENGTH FINISH. (589 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 3/9/2002 & rated 92 points: RICH BERRY FRUIT IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR WITH BLACK CHERRIES AND A TOUCH OF LICORICE. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. (581 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Ridge Geyserville

(Ridge Spring 2012 Wine Club notes)

In 1966, Ridge made its first Geyserville from a strip of river rock and clay soils along the abandoned San Francisco and Northern Pacific tracks. Over time, we have added two adjoining vineyards on this same defined site. Each vintage is distinct but typical flavor characteristics include the blackest of blackberry fruit, ripe plum, cedar, and a distinctive mineral quality.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
