Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 87 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/4/2024 & rated 90 points: Firm, rustic, and with as much greenery as fruit, the cranberry notes were more present than currants, giving the wine an overall, tart, chewy, austere, old-school character. The wine is typical of the vintage. If this is your thing, you are going to like it much more than I did. It will go a while longer. But the character is never going to change. Drink from 2024-2040.  Tasted by sdr on 1/27/2024 & rated 84 points: Whole Lotta Lafite; 1/26/2024-1/27/2024 (Wine Watch, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida): There is no trace of Lafite elegance in this bruiser of a vintage where the tannins and acidity have outlasted the fruit and from an era in which Lafite was not at the top of the echelon. Orange brown and too acidic and thin. Sometimes these old fashioned Bordeaux can be pleasant to drink but this is not one of them. (964 views)
Tasted by evanqian on 1/26/2024 & rated 95 points: dark red with brown hue. rustic acidity and leather when just opened, breathing in bottle for one hour, clean fruity flavours dominating, even a little sweet, very well mellowed, rose and violet, cedar, herbals, elegant but complex.

Prof Lei opened this, it's his vintage. very enjoyable, lasting nearly one hour, surprisingly vigorous and keep changing, amazing.

Tasted by hajoha on 11/13/2023 & rated 95 points: Chateau Lafite 1975.
Straks 50 år!
Det merkes ikke.
Den byr på nydelig på duft med masse rødfrukt intakt fortsatt.
I tillegg tobakk, lær, krydder og edelt treverk.
Rent og vakkert med finesse.
Ultra-smooth i munn.
Superbe (93) (3480 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 10/17/2022: IWFS Lafite Big Bottles (The Modern): Not well loved by most of the room but this was my WOTN. Great and stayed great throughout the evening (my last sip of the night before I finished my champagne was this wine). It's a bit almost minty in style. Lots of potpourri. There's dark dried fruits. Very expressive. From a double magnum from the estate. (3364 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 5/4/2022 & rated 95 points: Lafite Rothschild vertical (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Bright dark red color, a slightly crumbling cork. Fully mature nose displaying sweet red fruit, strawberry, plum, a hint of cassis, cedar, sous bois, lead pencil, cinnamon, light caramel, soy, tree bark and mineral. Nicely integrated palate, silky and fluid, perfect amount of acidity, earthy mineral, still showing slightly coarse tannins, and a medium long slightly dry red fruit driven finish. This was unyielding forever. Even after almost half of a century, it still shows a bit of coarse tannins. I like the old school claret expression. (4840 views)
Tasted by LorenzoIlMagnifico on 4/16/2022 & rated 96 points: Full rounded deep feminine wine. Woody, rich. Tannic yet highly drinkable. Big without being overwhelming. (3772 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 9/26/2021 & rated 93 points: Classic if a little lightweight in aromatic intensity and concentration on pop n’ pour, though it gains weight and density over several hours. The last glass was the best with medium richness of fruit with classic detailing and complexity — pencil lead and cedar really stood out in a bright finish. A fun time capsule. (4601 views)

Tasted by hajoha on 4/25/2021 & rated 93 points: Chateau Lafite Rotschild 1975
Elegant og perfekt moden.
Subtile røyktoner og spice.
Cordfløyel.
Sunn frukt fortsatt.
Lekkert å nyte dette.
Lang med nedslipte tanniner med et lite bitt.

Tasted by ploher on 3/31/2021: (Mostly) Bordeaux 1975: Quite musty at first (some thought the bottle was flawed, I didn't think so), but with some air this reveals a really elegant nose, a bit subdued still, but quintessential in its aromatics; very nice fruit on the palate, super elegant as well, aristocratic really; definitely less interesting than the Pichon Baron and some other wines of the evening, but without a doubt a high class wine. 17/20 (3238 views)
Tasted by hajoha on 10/14/2020 & rated 95 points: Chateau Lafite 1975.
Solid stabil kurve.
Sitter lenge med helt finkornede tanniner.
Smooth, men bra bitt i finish fortsatt.
Stor stor glede å smake.
Jolly good. 95p (4085 views)
Tasted by melzar on 10/3/2020 & rated 93 points: From 750: Heavy sediment in bottle. Fill is very bottom neck. This bottle may be slightly corked, or is it just bottle age? Corked wines usually get worse with time. This did not. Fragrant Bordeaux nose and a palate redolent with fruit, great acidity and fully resolved tannins. Drinking at peak, but will hold a few years, with no improvement expected. Nice finish. A real privilege to drink. (2991 views)
Tasted by winecoffee on 8/8/2020 & rated 94 points: 1975 Lafite! My first Lafite. Definitely worth the hype!

Figs and black currant on the nose. Slight bricking. Palate extremely complex with licorice, blackberry, black pepper, and chalk. oh my! Decanted for 90min. (3372 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 5/25/2020 & rated 92 points: Sandalwood, leather, plum fruit. Dark cherry palate. (4004 views)
Tasted by MuckSo on 8/25/2019 & rated 97 points: The 1975 Château Lafite Rothschild has a bad label but the wine was just terrific. It's the oldest Bordeaux I had, but on the palate it is was very alive. It's amazing how much fruit is left, mostly dried cherry and blackcurrant. Of course, there was much more going on with leather, wet forest floor, cigar box, eucalyptus and mint. It is in a great spot right now. I adore this wine! (11077 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 4/15/2019 & rated 93 points: The wine looks garnet coloured. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like forest floor, mushroom, strawberry jam, strawberry, raspberry and red currant. It tastes like strawberry, raspberry, red currant and strawberry jam. The body is medium/full. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

I decanted it and it needs at least 2 hours for the wine to develop on the nose. Initial nose was earthy and smell of forest floor. Thereafter, the wine opens up and truly indeed a first growth calibre. Personally do not think the wine will improve further, should drink up or for the birthday celebration. (13017 views)
Tasted by asteff on 8/5/2018 & rated 95 points: Opened for Teresa’s birthday celebration dinner. This was lovely. Held up beautifully for the 5-6 hours through dinner. Wonderful complex mature Bordeaux with tar, gravel, leather, medium fruits, vibrant acidity.Lots going on in an elegant package. (21856 views)
Tasted by wineappreciation on 5/3/2018 & rated 94 points: Raspberry, gravel, hints of graphite, must, cedar, cigar box, classic claret nose; smooth, graceful, considerable fruit remaining, long beautiful finish and lingering; not especially dynamic but very poised and, seemingly, with surprisingly considerable life remaining
After One Hour: Nose is more integrated and yet more classic; palate likewise more integrated and truly truly lovely (24015 views)
Tasted by sdr on 2/23/2018 & rated 90 points: Château Lafite - the Rematch (Cafe Maxx, Pompano Beach, Florida): Once again the ‘75 Lafite outperforms with respect to expectations. Tawny, not brown. Dried fruit, rust, the tannins are still firm and rather dry. But the whole is better than the parts and the hint of brown sugar helps to make it an interesting experience although not one I am eager to repeat any time soon. (25463 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 12/30/2017: According to my friend, 1billion people approved this so can't be wrong! Joke aside, this was gorgeous. We all drank our Bordeaux fat too young. Amazing complexity on both nose n palate. Great freshness, seamless on the palate and still getting a bit tight at the end suggested that this still have many years to go. Full of finesse and elegance. (16936 views)
Tasted by sdr on 12/16/2017 & rated 91 points: Lafite Vertical - More Hope than Substance? (Valentino's Cucina, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida): After reading all the mixed reviews for the ‘75 Lafite, I was eager to taste it again. I was pleasantly surprised. It’s tannic as expected for a ‘75 but very good in an old fashioned way with lots of cedar, smoke and spice. Surprisingly elegant, too. Very nice indeed. (16389 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/3/2017 & rated 92 points: Much better than I would have thought. The wine is on the rustic side, but it's difficult not to enjoy the cedar, tobacco, wet earth, cigar box, forest floor, red cherry and pipe tobacco nose. A bit green on the palate, there is a nice, spicy quality to the earthy red fruits in the rustic finish. (11687 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 8/5/2017: Love well aged wine and this was definitely that. Lots of leather and old boots. If you really looked for it a bit of fruit poked through, but mostly this was towards the end of it's life. Still very good, but also time to drink up. (9479 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
