Tasted by blank blank on 11/8/2022 & rated 87 points: I love more restrained Napa cab, and mostly drink burgundy and loire.

So that’s the context when I say this: this wine isn’t restrained or Bordeaux-like. It’s weedy, green, and dilute. Don’t know how they fouled up such a good vintage, but I am deeply underwhelmed. (532 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 6/16/2017 & rated 94 points: During a Cab Sav Dinner. Now here is a drinkable Napa Cabernet. Not your sweet bruiser but like in good Medoc fashion, controlled, restraint, yet enough fruit. Nose of dark fruit, some earthy scents intermix with cedar wood. Good volume with freshness and tannic structure to support it. (2131 views)
Tasted by Luvtwowine on 4/30/2016 & rated 90 points: this is a classic style california cab done bordeaux, if you like the lower alcohol, smoother, less fruit forward full wine, you will like this. (1919 views)
Tasted by listeyn on 5/28/2015 & rated 90 points: Very spicy flavors but very little fruit. My wife likes that but for me it has no real taste. Could age another year or two, we may be drinking a bit too soon. (2129 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 2/7/2015 & rated 91 points: At Clos du Val, I was poured one of the older Cabernet Sauvignons thanks to Alex and Bill, nose of rich cabernet/cherry pitted fruit, touch of cassis, spice, and plum, more of the same on the palate, very pleasant, fresh and rich berry flavor, subtle with elegance compared to the other reds tasted today, 100% Napa Valley fruit but not Stag's Leap District fruit, medium/big body, two year's to its peak, medium/long flavorful finish. (2136 views)
Tasted by askoje on 8/17/2014 & rated 93 points: Very deep red almost black color. Nose is beautiful with blackcurrant, earthy notes, volcanic soli, coffee beans, sigar box, viola and sweet chocolate. The taste follows the nose, surprisingly smooth tannins at this stage, but good structure. Smooth transitions, incredible balance and very long finish. Love it at this stage, and would like to taste again in several years.

Tasted at the winery on our second visit to CdV. Previous visit we tasted the same wine in the 98´ and 08´ vintages. (1689 views)

Clos du Val

Producer website
Clos Du Val, French for "small vineyard estate of a small valley," was founded in 1972 in the now legendary Stags Leap District by Franco-American entrepreneur John Goelet. After a worldwide search to purchase vineyard properties from which to craft world-class wines, 150 acres in Stags Leap and 180 acres in Carneros were chosen, solidifying Clos Du Val's iconic stature and formidable place in Napa Valley history. Today, for Clos Du Val Winemaker Ted Henry, it is the bounty from these renowned vineyards that acts as the foundation for the distinctive, terroir-driven wines of balance and elegance for which Clos Du Val is known.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
