Tasted by Bax62 on 5/7/2023 & rated 88 points: Tannins are well-integrated and this is drinking well now. Palate shows blackberry and some licorice. Still a bit drying on the finish. Not quite living up to its ratings and price, but decent. (466 views)
Tasted by Will Devize on 1/29/2023 & rated 90 points: 80/20 Grenache/Mourvèdre; 15%ABV. The alcohol is very dominant on the nose. On the palate there is lavender and cherry with some olive skin savouriness. Lots of weight and intensity with lovely fine tannins. This has plenty of pedigree but I do wonder if the high alcohol will continue to dog this wine. Revisit in 2028. (456 views)
Tasted by Jaber on 12/20/2021 & rated 91 points: Belle matière. Sous-bois. olives. tabac. À revoir dans un an minimum… (816 views)
Tasted by Bax62 on 8/25/2020 & rated 89 points: Deep red with purplish edge. Tannins have softened. Strong notes of anise. (1169 views)
Tasted by MrTunaDavis on 5/20/2020 & rated 86 points: Sharp nose - contrasted by smooth follow. Medium body. Subtle Rhone flavor, weaker than than alternatives. Would be a good choice for a soft bottle. (1079 views)
Tasted by Brothers in Quarantine on 5/16/2020: Have a tried a few wines from Gigondas region. I continue to be underwhelmed. (869 views)
Tasted by apple1813 on 11/3/2019 & rated 89 points: 2016 Montirius Gigondas Terrres dea Aînés showed a good combination of power and elegance, with a pure expression of perfectly ripe fruit without oak flavours.
The 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre was clear and deep ruby in colour, with aromas of ripe dark cherries, blackberries and bacon fat, in floral violets and earthy undertones. On the palate, it was full-bodied, spicy, with medium acidity and medium-high level of chalky tannin. The finish was rather short with some bitterness to it. The 63-hectare vineyard has been certified organic and biodynamic since 1999.
Personally, I found this wine lacking the depth, complexity or delineation to be worthy of high praises among American critics, except that it had the full-bodied richness, ripe fruit and elevated alcohol that reflected typical American preference. Some bottle age might bring out the extra dimensions of the wine, but unoaked Grenache-based Rhône blends are not known to age gracefully over a decade. (1178 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/21/2019 & rated 93 points: Earthy, spicy, fresh and herbal, the wine offers a juicy, peppery, dark red berry and olive note in the finish. The wine delivers lots of old-vine intensity. After full desetmming, the grapes are blended using 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre. (2458 views)
Tasted by vespasian on 9/27/2018: Extra richness and ripeness here versus the Vacqueyras. Darker inflections. Lovely approachability as well here, fruit open and seductive; creamy tannins. Gorgeous velvety texture. (616 views)

Montirius

Producer website

"Montirius has been a family estate for 5 generations. The slow conversion process from traditional to bio-dynamic vineyard management and wine making of the 133 acres owned by the family was started by Eric Saurel’s father Max in 1980. The estate was fully converted in 1996 and in 1999 Montirius became the first winery in the Vacqueyras & Gigondas appellations to be certified Bio-Dynamic. The estate is certified organic by Ecocert and Bio-Dynamic by Biodyvin."

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
