Community Tasting Notes (average 88.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Biggsy on 4/12/2024 & rated 91 points: Lovely nose with aromas of Cherry and a herbal character. Bright and fresh with juicy fruit, some people have called this lean but I don’t see that. There’s great depth of flavour with a Cherry Cola note and a touch of spice. (110 views)
Tasted by stvjackson on 5/24/2023 & rated 83 points: A rare letdown from A-R. There's no there there with this wine anymore. Aroma is faint, palate is fainter. No intensity, no complexity, nothing of interest. I would have expected more longeivity from this. (445 views)
Tasted by BurgherJon on 10/8/2022: Not the most complex wine, but I like the flavor. Lots of tart cherry but a bit of apple (729 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 11/24/2021: Craving a lighter style red, I opened this last night to accompany a healthy vegetarian dinner of roasted broccolini with tomato salad. Liked it initially but the wine eventually turned cloudy and the last pours (we typically get six pours out of a bottle, if we finish it) were a toss. Between that and the $35 price, why would you invest in this when for less you could have had a far more satisfying Cru Beaujolais? You wouldn't. (1315 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 9/17/2021 & rated 91 points: And time has done its work. Great QPR. 13% (1279 views)
Tasted by blackbrownbeige on 2/13/2021 & rated 90 points: Somewhere on the road between Pinot Noir and Gamay on the nose - the fruit quality has that slightly candied signature of the variety, but there's a wonderful and harmonious savoury element that instantly gives it depth and draws you in. After some time, a light graphite minerality begins to show through. The palate's lean and fresh with crunchy red fruit, but a touch of structure as well as a hint of spice on the finish give it foundation. If you like your Gamay on the brooding side - and I do - this is for you. (1556 views)
Tasted by VinoViking on 12/20/2020 & rated 85 points: Flavorful but simple, and a bit too heavy mouthfeel. Nice but not notable. (1134 views)
Tasted by asweeney43 on 12/20/2020 & rated 88 points: Not as good as I remember this wine being. Seemed heavier on palate and there wasn’t much of anything on the finish. Simple and easy drinking but a little disappointed for the price. (1404 views)
Tasted by chcook on 11/28/2020: This was fun. Totally gamay and fresh. Short on the palate and fruit bright. Delish (867 views)
Tasted by jy_wine on 11/26/2020 & rated 91 points: Paired great for Thanksgiving dinner. Light bodied with cheery and raspberry overtones. Drinking well. (811 views)
Tasted by slulkin on 11/14/2020 & rated 90 points: Much better than our bottle from a year ago. Pretty soft red fruit and mineral driven nose which led perfectly into a silky palate where the fruit and minerals danced together nicely. (824 views)
Tasted by viniferatu on 9/24/2020: Dried flowers, autumn leaves, dried herbs, lots of airy earthy, leafy, and veggie stuff. Strawberry and cherry are in the background. Fresh and mineral on the palate, mild tannic grip and lively acids. Tart and light in body, but tons of flavor. In a nice spot. Maybe worth saving for another 5+. Not sure. Good now, will be good for at least another few years. (958 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 9/21/2020 & rated 89 points: Solid. I prefer the Trousseau a bit more. (785 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 9/19/2020: A great shot at CA Beaujolais. Bright red fruit with a touch of carbonic and whole cluster. Bright acid, lightweight and easy to drink. There’s a nice grip to the tannin and overall this wine is fine. Worth the premium if you want to support CA wineries. (701 views)
Tasted by Mbad77 on 5/25/2020 & rated 89 points: Lovely fruity bottle with reasonable power and decent enough finish. Typically light red fruits and maybe a touch simple type of Beaujolais but quite expensive for shat it is. More than a Sunier Fleurie for example.
A good bottle though and great to try. Will happily have the odd bottle to hand. (1215 views)
Tasted by yaCellar on 5/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Day one: On the acid, minerals, and umami side of Gamay. Subtle is a generous way to put it. Day two: lovely aromatics and fruit have emerged! Looking forward to day three. Give this at least another year or two. (1005 views)
Tasted by willschenk on 5/2/2020 & rated 89 points: In a much better place than last summer. Takes about an hour, maybe an hour and a half to open. Ripe strawberry and cherry backed by an orange zest and rosemary-like sweetness. Some of that dirty socks funk I get from good Morgon. Shy aromatically now but juicy on the palate. Needs air now, drink mid 2020 - 2023? (976 views)
Tasted by virginiavino on 11/28/2019 & rated 85 points: Thin and uneventful (1497 views)
Tasted by 560 B&W on 11/18/2019 & rated 90 points: Consumed over three nights. Extremely tight and hard to read. Based on experience with this wine, I expect it will improve. Needs at least 1-2 years to rest. 13% (1477 views)
Tasted by slulkin on 11/10/2019 & rated 87 points: Bright ruby in the glass. Pleasant nose of strawberry and raspberry. Soft and round on the palate with the strawberry note dominating a pretty quick finish. Enjoyable but wouldn't look to re-buy. (1356 views)
Tasted by willschenk on 11/9/2019: Bright raspberry, wild strawberry, fresh ripe cherry gaining weight and evening out some young acidity with dust and some leafy notes with air. Needs time. (1119 views)
Tasted by Aregier on 11/8/2019 & rated 91 points: Reminds me of a tight, young Morgon. Not a lot of fruit, but nice tanin and acidity. Would have liked to see if the fruit came out with air; however it got polished off with Thai food. (1061 views)
Tasted by mikered on 11/4/2019 & rated 81 points: Started with nice strawberry and raspberry fruit with herbal tea, then just disappeared until the watery slightly acidic finish. I expected a lot more at this price, more then many high quality Cru Beaujolais, though I would have been disappointed even were it priced more like a Villages. Try Edmunds St John Bone Jolly, from close by, and tell me it's not twice the wine.

OK wine, but not for even half the price. (902 views)
Tasted by GaoCellar on 10/11/2019 & rated 80 points: Undrinkable on Day 1... very unpleasant artificial cherry candy. Improved by Days 2 and 3 but still not worth the ~$30 price tag. (903 views)
Tasted by Jzucker16 on 9/17/2019: no good (888 views)

Arnot-Roberts

Producer Website

Jamie Kutch left a highly paid career as a stock trader in 2005 to move to California and pursue his dream of making wine. People thought he was crazy, until the first Pinot Noir he released scored 93 points in Wine Spectator. That shouldn't come as a surprise as Jamie has cut his teeth among some of the best producers in the Pinot Noir world. From his time spent working at the revered Kosta Browne in Sonoma to receiving sage advice from none other than Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Jamie has taken everything he has learned to produce some of the most compelling and terroir driven wines in California.

The Kutch wines are made as naturally as possible. After the grapes are harvested by hand, they are sorted meticulously and moved only by gravity, before being fermented in small open-top containers with hand and foot punch downs using indigenous yeasts. When fermented, the wine is gravity flowed into French Oak barrels, where they age sur lie (on the lees). The vineyard pursues a minimalist philosophy, trying to produce the purest expression of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from a particular place and time.

Since foundation 2001, Arnot-Roberts has been one of the most progressive and revolutionary producers on the California landscape. Initially their focus was just on making great Californian wines, but when the cool 2005 vintage gave them wines in a more austere, high acid style than the region was used to, Nathan and Duncan reacted completely differently to practically everyone else in California – they loved them and decided to pursue lower ripeness levels and higher acidity in all of their wines henceforth.

The intent is to produce wines that express the character of the sites in which the grapes are grown. No vineyards are owned. Fruit was sourced by arrangements with farmers from prime sites in Napa, the Sonoma Coast, the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Santa Rita Hills, Moon Mountain and the Sierra Foothills. The focus is on single vineyards, but some regional / appellation wines are also made if the grapes show strong association with their origins. The common thread is that most of the fruit is sourced from cooler vineyard sites.

Arnot-Roberts Gamay Noir El Dorado

FROM THE WINERY
Many of you will know that we have been working with Gamay from the Sierra Foothills since 2011 under the RPM label. RPM was a collaborative effort between us and our friend Rajat Parr to explore the nature of this variety grown in granitic soils at the Barsotti and Witters vineyards outside Placerville. 2015 was the final vintage for the RPM label and we are now thrilled to bring it into our lineup. Both vineyards for this wine are located at around 3000’ elevation and are harvested and fermented separately, then blended together to make the final wine. The grapes are brought into the winery, loaded into steel fermentation tanks and sealed up for several days to commence carbonic maceration allowing the berries to start the fermentation process from the inside out. This technique, used in many of our favorite producer’s cellars in Beaujolais, adds a spicy fruitiness that infuse freshness and energy in the resulting wines. Upon completion of primary fermentation the wine is transferred to a mix of neutral oak Foudre and stainless steel for aging before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Varietal character (Appellation America)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
