Community Tasting Notes (average 93 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 104 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by deadwax on 1/25/2024 & rated 90 points: Nothing noticeably wrong, acid seemed to be about right, but the fruit was flat. More interesting than good. (608 views)
Tasted by d.f.c on 1/24/2024 & rated 94 points: An older vintage Bordeaux, so ample decanting is definitely necessary. It had plenty of tannins and structure, with reasonably long finish. But it lacked the fruity nose up front. (449 views)
Tasted by kevinpatrick on 11/2/2023: "Off" Vintages from Elite Producers: (Petrus, Lafite, Margaux, etc) (Charlotte, NC): Opened at 5pm and decanted for one hour. Back in the bottle until dinner at 6:30pm when cork was removed and slo-ox until serving at ~9:00pm.
Complex nose that immediately spoke of Lafite – leather, barnyard, lead pencil, and red fruit. Confirmed on the palate, this wine had all the stuffing if lacking a more mature profile one might anticipate from a “lesser” vintage. Youthful and fresh while still showing a balanced secondary profile. This wine flowed easily into a long savory finish. “A suit-and-tie wine with class and restraint” noted one commenter. Even with its elevated performance, it likely would have benefitted from an earlier decant. One vote for WOTN, fourth place overall. (1097 views)
Tasted by Bandreas on 8/10/2023: Shared with Jim Cahill and our wives...
Blood-red color, paling a bit at the rim. On the nose a soft appearance with some leather. On the palate a good impression with good volume.Quite smooth, well balanced and elegant but a bit monochromatic.
Maybe with more air it will further develop...
It did open up further later on but the wow-factor just did not come. Well polished but I just could not get very enthusiastic about it. (1128 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 5/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Amazing Bordeaux To Mark A Special Birthday (Noizé, London): Blueberry cream and macaron nose with some subtle smokiness. Palate fine and correct. Very refined and charming. Unfairly suffers in the stellar company; on its own this would be a delightful accompaniment to a dinner. (1771 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 4/17/2022: Nose is dominated by pepper and woody spice, with a touch of red currant and savory Asian sauce notes.
On the palate, it is medium body, nicely integrated with bright acidity and a decent finish. The wine is better on the palate than the nose. It’s probably in its prime and will drink well for 5-10 years but I don’t see this getting much better. (2572 views)
Tasted by yukoner on 3/27/2022 & rated 94 points: Not much left for this particular bottle. I think it is past is optimum drinking window (2447 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 1/30/2022 & rated 92 points: 醒酒一个半小时,闻香轻微酱味,动物皮毛,肉味,人参的香气,黑李子的果香,入口酸度中高,单宁细腻,酒液咸鲜,矿物感,石墨气息,人参,烤面包的味道,后段植物微苦,余味木质香气。一支充分陈年,处在适饮期后期的酒,植物气息和橡木桶主导,已经没有太活跃的果香,口感略有些咸苦,缺少愉悦感,但有着复杂的香气,体现的是老酒的另一种魅力。 (2625 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 12/10/2021 & rated 93 points: Colder, beautifully resolved, very pleasurable. 93 (2713 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 10/25/2021 & rated 94 points: A private dinner (Restaurant d'Oude Schuur, Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium): Classic Lafite nose, fragrant, mature but fresh, spices and blackcurrants, flowers and oyster shell; slender and gentle but lively palate, lovely freshness and firm tannic grip; very good resonance and length. (3503 views)
Tasted by Malarky997 on 7/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Bit sharp at the end (2034 views)
 Tasted by Malarky997 on 6/20/2021 & rated 94 points: Beautiful (1959 views)
Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 4/18/2020 & rated 90 points: Kleur: Robijnrood met een oranjebruine rand. Aroma / bouquet: Tertiair. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100

Color: Ruby red with an orange-brown edge. Aroma / bouquet: Tertiary. Butter-soft bouquet, vinous, no trace of oxidation, but traces of fatigue (drinkability indication WA 2000-2015. Taste / Finish: Also buttery in the mouth. And 5 years after the end of the Parker drinkability indication pleasant Soft acidity, nicely grasped tannins In the final this wine unfortunately shows too little to be brilliant. General / potential: Beautiful, classic and almost biggest icon wine 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Taste / Finish: 16 + General / potential: 8 = 90/100 (3863 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 2/8/2020: Acker 200; 2/7/2020-2/8/2020 (The Pool & Cipriani): Very young tasting but isn't that always the case with Lafite? It's got tons of years left. Lots of black fruits and smoke and cigar and perhaps just a hint tight but still in a good spot. (4279 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 8/24/2019 & rated 92 points: blind
too much green Paprika, reminds to a unripe CF, missing Cassis, few tertiary Aromas. I think it won't get much better. Unripe fuits is the Problem. 92 (4848 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 5/25/2019 & rated 93 points: Very fine and getting quite ready. (5081 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 5/25/2019 & rated 90 points: 12 coeur. Decent for the vintage. (4889 views)
Tasted by Willi Vinotti on 1/12/2019 & rated 94 points: Exceptionally fine lafite. Much more advanced than the recently tasted 98 and much more open for business. It took some 2 hours to open up and shed the initial stiffness. But then it became Pauillac sweet and subtly multilayered, long and elegant as lafite can be at its best. A very good ambassador of the chateau, not hampered by the weak year at all. Chapeau! And plenty of years ahead. (4190 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 12/2/2018 & rated 90 points: The wine looks violet colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, red currant, prune and cedar. The body is medium/full. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity. (4235 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 12/1/2018: The wine looks garnet colored. It smells like blackberry, blueberry, black currant (cassis), forest floor, toast, coffee, cedar, vanilla, black pepper and cinnamon. (315 views)
Tasted by salil on 10/2/2018 flawed bottle: Corked. BAH. (4061 views)
Tasted by dlduchon on 9/19/2018 & rated 89 points: Nice off vintage Lafite. Matt and I enjoyed this wine and the experience drinking it. (3470 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 8/31/2018 & rated 94 points: Drank at 67
Young pencil sharp with a wonderful smooth mouthfeel. Nice. (3592 views)
Tasted by DonDon on 8/30/2018 & rated 92 points: Drunk at 67PM as part of an insane lineup of mostly much older wines. To be honest this got a little lost in the line up and was slightly unremarkable (am I allowed to say that about Lafite?!). Delicious wine. Great fruit. If I’d had it in it’s own with roast beef I’d maybe score this more? But delighted to have had a glass of this. (2785 views)
Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc) - Read More about the Medoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
