Tasted by Motz on 11/4/2022 & rated 94 points: Tasting Rendezvous with Rick, of Rick & Ilsa: Rick and I purchased this from the list at the steakhouse. In any given tasting, this could be WOTN, but not on this occasion. All Italy, all the way! And, given the substance, acid, and tannic structure, it could only be Aglianico. Indeed, the wine sports medium plus acid and medium plus tannin. Everything as it should be and for a very fair tariff. Going strong. This bottle had no less than a decade of evolution ahead. Delicious! (1622 views)
Tasted by Rick & Ilsa on 11/1/2022: Purchased at restaurant. It was my first time with this varietal (Aglianico). Last wine of the night and some palate fatigue and brain fuzz were creeping in. Dark fruits, very dry, tannins still easy to find, dirt and perhaps tobacco. Plenty of fruit still, and a good beef wine. Would order again. Not rated. (772 views)
Tasted by Genius Light on 7/27/2022 & rated 97 points: Lush, mellow, complex, elegant—a truly impressive wine with 17 years of bottle age! (787 views)
Tasted by vincemcd61 on 3/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Delicious. Had with BBQ burgers with cheddar and bacon (1514 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 2/19/2021: Good+. On the backside of its curve, but still offering compelling freshness, with all the balance and elegance I've come to expect. Now or the next 5+ years. highly recommended+

Tasted by WinoBear on 2/4/2020 & rated 91 points: This is one of those wines where you wish you had more bottles so you could always have it on hand. Dry, deep-bodied, tannic, and astringent with notes of leather, vanilla, peppercorn, whiskey and a hint of dark berry. (1766 views)
Tasted by vincemcd61 on 1/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Wow. What a distinct delicious wine. Had with pizza. Next time have it with lasagna or lamp or even BBQ. (1696 views)
Tasted by Chasse_spleen on 2/10/2018 & rated 92 points: Deep blue fruits in the nose, quite complex and spicy. Long taste with firm tannins, and a lot of acidity. Well worth waiting for, probably at its peak. (2895 views)
Tasted by sdr on 2/6/2018: Quite good, tannic, rich fruit (2765 views)
Tasted by ecola on 11/4/2017: Still drinking well, maybe a little past its prime. Soft and smooth red berry with some slight raisining. Acidity is holding on the long finish. (2653 views)
Tasted by juffer on 9/28/2017 & rated 93 points: Surprisingly high pitched nose of blackberry, but also a touch of licorice. Fairly rich mouthfeel. Abundant acidity on the finish which makes me think this wine will continue to age well. Very enjoyable and a notch above the 2003 vintage. (2690 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 5/16/2017 & rated 92 points: Beautiful smooth silky body. Dark blackberry fruit. Nice long finish. Very well put together (3296 views)
Tasted by lushlife on 4/17/2017 & rated 92 points: on first taste your nose is hit with aromas of bright red fruit. on the palate there is cherry, chocolate, leather, tar and spice all leading to a b right acidic finish with silky tannins drinking well now, probably will continue to improve; wish I had more to experience its evolution over time (2107 views)
Tasted by jkscully on 3/27/2017: This wine needed a solid three hours of decanting, but then it drank very well. The palate is hints of Sandlewood and lots of cherry and chocolate with a velvety texture and bright acidic finish. This wine seems to be made in an international style, as I was surprised at how ripe the fruit tasted – nevertheless it is animated by that delightful and distinctive Italian, acidic finish. It wasn’t as good on day 2, but I got more notes of leather, plum, and spice. My only real complaint is that it is a bit one dimensional in flavor (in many ways like the Justin Iscoceles from last week).

The tannins were just starting to break down and were providing some attractive energy, but I think that the wine will improve with even more bottle age. The fruit will certainly last and, with another five years, the tannins could soften even more. If I could do it again, I would have waited five more years, though it was still delicious now.

If I’m drawing comparisons, I (surprisingly) find this wine to be most similar to a Ribera del Duero. It’s a big polished wine with Sandlewood and Chocolate flavors (i.e. balsamico). I think that if I were tasting it blind, I would have guessed Tempranillo (though this wine clearly had more acid than a typical Tempranillo). (2124 views)
Tasted by capacious on 1/12/2017 & rated 90 points: some people say not to drink aglianico this young, we found it drinking nicely, but grant its still a young wine and time will likely reward. (2458 views)
Tasted by bablues on 12/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Didn't take detailed notes. Opened two of these after the 03. 03 was a little better but this was still drinking beautifully. (2000 views)
Tasted by Boupboup on 12/2/2016 & rated 94 points: wow, excellent, rien à dire (1531 views)
Tasted by mrl1983 on 3/23/2016 & rated 91 points: Full bodied juicy wine. Sour cherries, tar, leather, and dark berries. Soft tannins make this a very enjoyable wine. In a great spot now. (2312 views)
Tasted by Umay Ceviker on 4/7/2013 & rated 94 points: Deep, inky ruby. Still tight on the nose only featuring its richness and depth with time. Mulberry and blackberry notes dominate while a charming edge of tar, leather and tobacco follow. The palate, all under a bitter chocolate frame, displays vivacious fruit with ripe, velvety tannins encased in a dense, thick texture. So well focused and concentrated with a long lasting finish. Has a long life ahead. (5327 views)
Tasted by tooch on 3/13/2013 & rated 87 points: The Wines of Feudi di San Gregorio (Spacca Napoli Pizzeria - Chicago, IL): I went back for more of this than any other wine of the night. Easy drinking. Chocolate, cherries, smoke, tobacco...nothing too earth shattering there. The finish seemed to have a bite more acidity than the 2001 giving it a bit more balance. (5729 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 11/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Very dark, almost black and opaque. Initially restrained, used some time in the decanter to reveal a lovely and elegant combination of black tea, black cherry, blackberry and nicely integrated high quality oak. On the palate it is full-bodied with rich fruit, firm tannins and balancing acidity. Aftertaste is long. An excellent wine that might improve even further over the next 5 to 10 years, but is already absolutely enjoyable. (5330 views)
Tasted by ecola on 9/21/2012 & rated 91 points: Dark and intense. Gripping on the palate. Medium to full body. Solid food wine. Lingering and long finish. Quality wine. (5181 views)
Tasted by toppen9 on 8/5/2012 & rated 90 points: Interesting
I don't think I have ever tasted anything like this (4791 views)
Tasted by ecola on 5/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Very sweet and ripe fruit. May need some time for secondary flavors to evolve. (2560 views)

Aglianico

Varietal character (Appellation America)

The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)

Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.
