Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 59 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vinnut on 3/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Subsequent notes on this wine from 8 years ago. Deep, dark garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, cassis & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & mint notes, some floral notes, classic cedar & tobacco notes, herbs, anise, minerals, spices & vanilla/oak in the background. Full to medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe dark fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & cassis with cocoa, herbs, minerals, spices, mint & vanilla/oak in the background. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present at 27 years of age but doubt there would be any further development from additional aging although it should hold at this plateau for a few more years. (1111 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/8/2017 & rated 92 points: Chicago Wine Flock...Krengels compare New vs Old World (Casa Krengel - Bannockburn IL): Tasted double blind. Black plum and cherry with some cassis and faint spice. Rich start, good+ weight and length. Drinking wonderfully now, but this will most likely continue to drink well for another decade. (4088 views)
Tasted by Sonoma Duck on 3/6/2016 & rated 96 points: Perfect cork, a bit of lightening at the rim. Popped and poured from a magnum. Nose of black fruits plus cedar. I took this to a charity event. Most people at the table had never had a wine of this quality. Complex with a long finish, will keep for a few years but I would enjoy now. (4454 views)
Tasted by CJChampion on 9/17/2015 & rated 93 points: tight on opening, 15 min later opening up, in 30 minutes a beautiful, medium/full bodied cab. Lovely aromatics, long finish. Glad i have more. should hold for a few years. (5026 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 12/28/2014 & rated 92 points: Deep, dark garnet in color with no signs of aging. Fragrant, attractive and complex nose of well developed & mature, ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, cassis and plums with dark cocoa & mint overtones, classic cedar & aged tobacco notes, dried herbs, licorice, minerals, some spices and toasted oak in the background. Full to medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of balanced, well developed & mature, supple texture, seamless & elegant, ripe dark fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & cassis with dark cocoa, herbs, minerals, earthy, spices, mint and toasty oak in the background. Long lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting and airing but doubt there would be any further development from additional aging although it should hold at this plateau for a few more years. (5433 views)
Tasted by Dberlijn on 4/19/2014 & rated 93 points: Decant, then back in the bottle. Drank over the evening.
Solid color, no bricking. On the nose a focussed mature Napa Cab.
Evolved taste, with integrated tanins, core of cherry, bit of earthiness, hints of spice and mint. Very good.
Although not heavy, it could easily match the cassoulette we had at dinner.
A solid wine. (5344 views)
Tasted by Cmainardi on 3/30/2014 & rated 93 points: Popped and drank with standing rib roast because last night this wine seemed close to the edge. This was my last bottle and was much better than the one last night. Classical mature Cab with integrated smooth tannins, wonderful nose and god fruit with a long finish. (3613 views)
Tasted by Cmainardi on 3/30/2014 & rated 88 points: Mature Napa cab. At the edge of aging. After some air, I detected the faintest bit of oxidation. Certainly not getting better. Drink up if you got them. (2297 views)
Tasted by dbg on 10/10/2013: Popped cork 3 days after Coravin. No change. Dark red core, lighter at rim but no bricking. Cassis, cherry, moist earth, bit of VA which gives way over time to hints of mint and tobacco. Medium body, cassis and cherry follow the nose with hints of sweet aged cab, nice balance, hints of soft tannins appear at the tail end of a long finish suggesting this will hold for another 5 years or more. Excellent-outstanding. (2638 views)
Tasted by dbg on 10/9/2013: Coravin 2 glasses. Identical to last night's note initially, but second glass developed additional complexity with more air time. (2095 views)
Tasted by dbg on 10/8/2013: Cellared since release. Perfect fill. Coravin 2 glasses. (1462 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 6/29/2013 & rated 94 points: red garnet. Nose was bothered by bottle stink initially but clearly opened to a Cab mellow with age-some tobacco, tarragon, plums, blackberries. Mouth was great, rich, long lasting. Wonderful. Decant. (1556 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 10/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Sampled 10/20/12 from Magnum. A dark and fully loaded Cab with tons of dense black fruits. Smooth but also a real mouthfiller. Some leather and tobacco notes faintly underneath with a little sweet Oak. In this format easily another 10 years of life. (2150 views)
Tasted by NapaRightBanker on 5/21/2012 & rated 93 points: No formal notes, tasted over dinner in low light at restaurant with deep list. What a treat. Elegant, supple, silken wine with core of firm black fruit, graphite, lovely acid lift, beautiful example of Cabernet Sauvignon from cooler-climate Napa. Nice balance. 13.5% abv. Drinking well at 17! Hints of menthol and mineral as noted in earlier tastings. (2283 views)
Tasted by tfriedman on 1/2/2012 flawed bottle: Corked (2439 views)
Tasted by GA on 11/20/2011 & rated 92 points: 11/11 Balanced fruit and finish - resolved tannins. 92 pts. (2562 views)
Tasted by sdezutti on 11/7/2011 & rated 93 points: Not extremely long or complex; but a nicely balanced wine with good dark berry flavors and spicy oak on the finish. Very smooth bottle with no hard edges. (2464 views)
Tasted by Bordeauxman on 10/10/2011 & rated 88 points: Light nose of mature dark fruit & forest floor. This is a decent wine that is ready to drink but it lacks backbone and complexity. It the oak taste still comes through with mature dark fruit taking a back seat. (2065 views)
Tasted by CDH on 7/28/2011 & rated 90 points: No formal notes taken. Very dark purple color, muted nose upon opening. No bricking. On the palate I got blackberry fruit, minimal tannins and just enough acid to balance out the fruit. Medium finish. Good weight, smooth - another taster said "supple" and I agree. At 16 years of age (the wine!) I say drink up! (2363 views)
Tasted by cdunn on 3/17/2011 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind, there was split over whether this was Bordeaux or CalCab from '90s. Still full-bodied, smooth texture, but not at all flabby or flat. Plenty of life. Cassis, dark fruit, faint blueberry, leather. Held up well alongside some first rate Bordeaux and a gorgeous '91 Forman. (2696 views)
Tasted by hcampana on 12/27/2010 & rated 90 points: From Magnum. Not tasted blind. Very supple wine. Elegant. Tannins have completely melted in the 15 years it lasted in bottle. For lovers of elegance and suppleness. I would have liked a bit more concentration and depth, but it is very nice nevertheless.

De botella de 1,500ml. No probado a ciegas. Vino muy terso, sutil, elegante. Los taninos se derritieron completamente en los 15 años que ha durado en botella. Para amantes de vinos elegantes y sutiles. A mi me hubiese gustado más concentración y profundidad, pero es muy decente. (2703 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 10/16/2010 & rated 92 points: Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Moderate complex plummy, minty, creamy black rock with doses of menthol, rustic dark cherries, cola - Dr. Pepper.
Nice balance on the palate and finish. Good acidity and nice grip. Showing well.
I was surprised this was Etude, tasted more of a cult wine in the 100 dollar range. (3738 views)
Tasted by psmith on 10/16/2010: Red cherry fruits. Surprisingly resolved structure that's a bit disconnected from the youthful fruit profile. Ready. Enjoyable. (2868 views)
Tasted by wineaux2 on 10/12/2009: This wine was DOA. Body was tinged with reddish-brown and had a light mouthfeel for a cab. Nose didn't offer much other than stewed fruits. Astringent on the palate and devoid of fruit. No depth or concentration left at all. Perhaps this was a bottle that was mistreated in its youth but maybe just over-the-hill. Disappointing. (3644 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 9/22/2009 & rated 90 points: Drink up. The fruit is fading. Still good but past its prime. (3594 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
