Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by GrapeScott on 11/25/2021 & rated 90 points: Drank alongside an '00 Ridge Lytton Springs with Thanksgiving dinner, this was the showier wine. Peppery brambly fruit profile like you would expect in a mountain zin, this is rich and spicy and still quite fruit forward. (458 views)
Tasted by texaswinelover on 12/27/2019: Finally opened. Honestly wasn’t overly happy with my last bottles so I’ve been waiting for this one. Still not super pleased. Not sure I’d guess Zinfandel. Varietal notes?? Acid is pretty high. Red fruit predominates. Not over the hill. No off tastes. Just nothing standing out. (528 views)
Tasted by btock on 4/13/2013 & rated 93 points: Brought to a zin tasting and this was a highlight. Juicy acidity, laced with minerality and rocks. Boisenberry, spritely, definitely a food wine. Really impressed with how gracefully this has held up. Text book case for aging good zin a couple years. (2439 views)
Tasted by GrapeScott on 8/29/2012 & rated 91 points: Drank with picnic dinner (pork ribs, grilled corn, potato salad) at the Hatch Shell concert on Storrow Drive. Agree with the pencil shavings on the nose, plus mostly plum fruit profile. Big but balanced, holding its alcohol pretty well. Very good zin but hate the fort-knox like impenetrable capsule. (2969 views)
Tasted by btock on 2/19/2012 & rated 92 points: bright, succulent red fruits, high toned acidity. Dynamic wine, rises above the typical zin palate weight without being thin. Enjoyed this very much. (3043 views)
Tasted by MLipton on 9/30/2011: Initially, a big whack of graphite (pencil lead), gradually fading into plummy fruit and a very tarry nose. Big, dense, with good bracing acidity and hiding its 15.5% ABV quite nicely. Not a small wine, but a decent Zin in the tarry and big mold. (3169 views)
Tasted by JFish on 7/29/2011: Quick TN: Much more together than the prior bottle last October. Slight sweet, red fruits, spice. Enjoyed with killer grilled burgers and Zingerman hot dogs. (3055 views)
Tasted by Bdbrutus on 2/26/2011 & rated 91 points: Berry, vanilla and wood pulp on the nose. Says 15.5% alcohol but it is very well integrated, no one at the table could believe it. The fruit is very restrained on the palate, no jammieness to be found. Sad its the last one. Hopeful they will give it another go soon. (1730 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 2/6/2011 & rated 90 points: San Antonio Wine Geeks - The Great Lamb Feast (with syrah) (Home of John Webber): Initially served blind. There were many guesses to the varietal: new world Grenache, tempanillo, etc, none were close.
Nose with a slight port-like quality with mocha and cream. Pure red fruits on the palate—lots of cassis and cherry with a slight cranberry edge, leading into a lengthy creamy vanilla finish. Lots of American oak it seemed. Good wine, though I found the oak slightly oppressive and lacking complexity compared to the group. --I was corrected by the winemaker, this saw neither new oak, nor American. Oh well...you think you know something... (2291 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 12/2/2010 & rated 92 points: 15.5% alcohol. Medium ruby red. Expressive red fruit nose. Rasberries dominate the palate impression, supported by strawberries, black cherry and spice. Exceptionally well balanced, good concentration and a lingering aftertaste.

Not an old-vine zin, but an exceptional zin from Mt. Veeder. Carole Meredith, one of the queens of Zinfandel history is behind this wine. My last one. No 08s were made, but I understand this beauty may be back for '09. (1686 views)
Tasted by JFish on 10/17/2010: My experience with this wine is totally different from the tns I've read. Fumey from alcohol on the nose and there was also some heat on the palate. Fairly sweet, lacking a mid-palate but good acidity. Some noticeable oak. Reminds me a bit of the 2004 Outpost Grenache - hopefully this will come around like that wine has with a few years in the bottle. (1799 views)
Tasted by spee on 9/16/2010 & rated 93 points: Black Cherry on the nose. Not an alcohol or fruit bomb like most zins. (2294 views)
Tasted by btock on 8/14/2010 & rated 92 points: Solid zin, shows mountain fruit purity and has a certain lightness to it. I can see the Lagier Meredith hand in the winemaking, culls out that fruit to sit on top of the acid backbone, a really well constructed bottle. The finish is long and flavorful without being sweet. Great grill wine, held up over 3 nights. (1880 views)
Tasted by Bdbrutus on 6/13/2010 & rated 92 points: Blackberry, blueberry and strawberry and a hint of clove/cinnamon. Smooth and long finish. Holds the high alcohol well and stays away from being jammy. Really well done. (2011 views)
Tasted by alanr on 4/8/2010 & rated 93 points: Medium body, dark garnet, bit of sweet fruit on the nose, then fabulous earthly raspberry and zinberry fruit, followed by some nice garrique and a complex savory spice character. A really wonderful Zin, drinking beautifully now, but has the structure and balance to hold for quite a few years I'm sure. Just a one of a kind bottling so far, hope we get to see another in the future. (2273 views)
Tasted by sdatl on 1/8/2010 & rated 93 points: Innovative and delicious take on Zinfandel -- very aromatic and relatively light bodied, with raspberry and blackberry flavors seamlessly integrated with the oak and a clean black pepper snap at the finish; excellent stuff (2240 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 10/30/2009 & rated 90 points: A highly perfumed nose of raspberry (with a slight brambly edge), garrigue and dark chocolate. Elegant on the palate, with bright red berry and a touch of fresh earth. Excellent crisp acids, red fruits and a limestone minerality on the finish. A Zin for the Pinot lover. Delicate and detailed. I am interested to try this again in a couple of years. (2373 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 8/24/2009 & rated 93 points: 2009 Family Winemakers Annual Tasting; 8/23/2009-8/24/2009 (Fort Mason, San Francisco, California): Evocative berry, dreid berry nose; dried berry, berry, chocolate palate with depth; medium-plus finish (best Zin I tasted at '09 Family Winemakers) (4696 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
