Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by StiGGe on 2/28/2024 & rated 86 points: Has a very strong acid through its taste. It reminds me of wines from 1996.

The acid takes over the wine so its hard to tell any aromas or flavours.

It maybe have gone a little above its peak, but the cork popped slightly.

If you have one bottle i think its time to open it up. (193 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 8/12/2021 flawed bottle: Corked. (2197 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 4/27/2021 & rated 94 points: Full golden color with very mild beading; complex nose of toffee sweetness, baked apple, quite toasty; palate has similar qualities, very relaxed and soft vinosity. Showing peak maturity and in a great place now! (2407 views)
Tasted by PanosKakaviatos on 1/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Holiday dinner with friends at French Embassy, Washington D.C. (Petit Bouchon Restaurant, French Embassy): Notes of hazelnut and toffee. Salted almond. This is pretty taut and lovely for its age. Indeed, the color is excellent, too. An overall impression of being svelte. Paul who brought it said that they had "a good run" in early 1990s, even if the 1993 vintage is not recognized as being that great. Indeed, both Decanter and wine critic John Gilman loved this in rather recent tastings. Rated 97 points by Decanter in a 2017 tasting, the panel noted that 1993 may be an average vintage overall for the region, but this 1993 proved a "real beauty, equal to the 1995 but in a different style." Gilman gave it 94 out of 100, when he tasted it in 2016. He described the wine as having been "fully mature for many years now, but continues to be fresh and lively on the palate, with its internal structure sound and seamless." (4172 views)
Tasted by Xavier94 on 2/4/2018 & rated 91 points: Lots of promise with this one, but a bit too advanced. Nutty aromas seem to dominate but with time, bruised apple, brown sugar, spearmint introduce fresh, lively flavors of baked apple, sourdough and chalky minerals in the background. 91-92 points. Perhaps other bottles are more on point. (4734 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/10/2016 & rated 93 points: Nice and bready nose, lots of warm brioche. Distinct salinity. Nice and toasty but still with a salty edge. Somewhat oxidative but not too far along. Mild orange citrus, dried apricots, slightly nutty, and a bit eggy. Super bright on the palate with plenty of energy. Dense, rich, strong finish with plenty of effervescence. Maybe the perfect time to be drinking this. The nose is mature, but the palate is crisp and brimming with acidity and freshness. Every bit as enjoyable as a '90 and '85 of this enjoyed recently, but this bottle was opened with port tongs and a super soaker... (6834 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/7/2016 flawed bottle: French Chardonnay With and Without Bubbles (1760 Restaurant, San Francisco): Corked! (5309 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 7/11/2016 & rated 93 points: An atypical Monday (Dale's): Beautiful! Very active, fine mousse. Very rich brioche/biscuit/toast nose. Amazing mouthfeel, creamy; brioche, cream, rich lemon, creme brulee, dough, toast on the palate, with a citrus lift. Long finish. Yum. (5011 views)
Tasted by salil on 7/11/2016 & rated 94 points: Fantastic Champagne - powerful, deep, and very long with lots of depth to the citrus and pear fruit, and layers of fresh baked bread, yeast, vanilla cream, and chalky minerality augmenting the fruit here. It's quite rich and full bodied on the palate, yet feels amazingly light and focused thanks to the powerful acidity beneath, with a finish that goes on and on. Loved this. (5887 views)
Tasted by godx on 9/23/2015: Drank alongside the 96. Slightly darker than the 96 and quite a bit more mature. Mushroom nose, complex aged champagne notes. Decent acidity and weight. Well balanced and length. Excellent. (3655 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/15/2015: The smell off the cork pull reminds me of a Grand Reserva Rioja Blanco. Tight and very focused mid-palate. Lots of energy and verve here. Crispy. (3509 views)
Tasted by Greg Munyard on 9/17/2014 & rated 95 points: A superlative bottle - the best ever of a few that we have drunk, again courtesy of Mena Samios - and one of the most enjoyable bottles of champagne I have ever drunk from a long list of the world's best.

Was in absolutely perfect condition, with marvellous honeyed, apple pie and brioche flavours, soft edges (bubbles were fine and persistent but with a lovely gentle maturity) and a discrete twist of grapefruit giving just the right dose of freshness to a beautifully flavoured, beautifully balanced wine. Hints of liqueur on the nose reminded us that the wine had maturity - but 21 years old?? You're kidding. A stunning bottle that would have been an unbelievable present for someone born in 1993. (4509 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 8/24/2013 & rated 91 points: Quite evolved - slightly oxidative but bottle in an excellent spot now. Apricots, pineapple. I would drink these. (4988 views)
(5836 views)
Tasted by Soundcaresser on 12/25/2012 & rated 91 points: Granny Smith & toast with a nice dollop of sweetness. Smooth and delicious. (5775 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/29/2012: I am working on a theory that the older a champagne is the better it is the longer it is open. Well, this sort of disproved that theory. Was wonderful right off the cork pull. Was also wonderful (but a bit more "amaretto" tasting five hours later. Probably time to drink up! (4962 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 12/31/2011 & rated 92 points: New Year's Eve (Again) (Beth and David's in Glenview, IL): Great nose, good color and lively bubbles. An old time favorite. (5609 views)
Tasted by Greg Munyard on 9/8/2011 & rated 92 points: Superb; another great champagne courtesy of Mena Samios.

Nose: Lovely honeyed vanilla and apple / pears character blended in a complex amalgam of baked fruits / varnished old wood / sweet liqueur and hints of aged sherry. Beautifully integrated and without any of the hessian bag characters sometimes seen in an 18 y.o. champagne.

Palate: Think intensity + complexity + integration + a huge finish. Although there was not much gas left in the wine, what remained gave a lovely lifted mousse. Extremely intense flavours, and lots of well balanced acid, all beautifully integrated. Very long, complex, mature (with a touch of sherry) finish that lasted for minutes after swallowing, leaving a beautiful warm mouthfeel. (4589 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 3/27/2011 & rated 92 points: Very nice bottle of bubbly. Fresh and vibrant. (4851 views)
Tasted by Breguet on 1/22/2011 & rated 95 points: Was simply outstanding. One of the best bottles of any Champagne I've ever had. Distinctive taste of apple and brioche. (4722 views)
Tasted by scamhi on 9/29/2010: light gold color, not oxidized, fine bubbles and delicious biscuit mousse. long finish. Excellent bottle (5503 views)
Tasted by Umay Ceviker on 6/18/2010 & rated 92 points: Deep yellow in colour with intense flavours of grilled brioche and baked apple accompanied by a solemn minerality. Bold and concentrated on the palate with a delicate mousse and a youthful, creamy texture. The finish is rich and powerful. (5116 views)
Tasted by Soundcaresser on 5/9/2010 & rated 90 points: Aged well. Fruit driven with apple notes, great mouthfeel. Enjoyed this bubbly thoroughly. Drank at the Vankulas to celebrate Google promotions. (5241 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 3/20/2010: 12.0% alcohol. Fully mature, with a beautiful honeyed color. A bit of citrus still showing on the nose, with apple, loads of yeasty bread, minerals, and a touch of sherry-like notes. In the mouth, sumptuous and stately, with great elegance and power. The fruit is coated in sappy, yeasty notes, with impeccable balance and a remaining streak of youthful acidity. Long finish emphasizes brioche notes, with that touch of sherry creeping in. Drink up, but this is very tasty. A-/A (5231 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/8/2009: Two nights, two bottles of '93 Comtes de Champagne. Last night it was spectacular, particularly three hours in (not decanted). It went from butterscotch down to a deep coco / dark chocolate. Impressive, amazing. Immense finish. Today, just off the cork-fly a little bit funky. But these things take time you know. (5881 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
