Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by zachb1125 on 12/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Excellent stuff, although it's definitely on the young side still. Complex nose of violet, rose, blackberry, cherry, slate, earth, light smoke, and cedar. The palate even more so with blackberry, cherry, plum, bay leaf, cacao, violet, a bit of earth and leather. Medium body and medium+acidity and tannins. Definitely understand the hype. (546 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 8/20/2023: This took many hours to come together—thought it was corked on open—but drank very well, especially the next day. Juicy and dense. Wild berry, with some dark fruit. The tannin are still somewhat tight though very approachable the next day. (685 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 11/25/2022: Spicy and painfully young; shows a lot of promise but painfully bitter tannin make it difficult to approach yet. (1092 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 9/13/2022: Decanted and served right away. Deep ruby. Vibrant blueberry fruit, spice, and herbs on the nose. Medium weight with great chocolatey density and soil. Discretely ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit, a touch of olive, outstanding acidity, and ripe tannins. Wondrous wine that is still in the early going. So clean that it is a shock to the palate for someone reared on old, funky Tempier. I would hold for another 5 to 7 years for full maturity. (1613 views)
Tasted by french16 on 9/9/2020: From the list au Bon George. Surprisingly accessible and ready to drink. Showing a lot of mourvedre aromatics.
Very bloody, leather and touch of brett, mineral nose with fresh dark fruits with hint of red berry.
I loved the freshness of the palate and the 14.5% were absolutely not noticeable. Integrated tannins.
Long finish. (2567 views)
Tasted by violistus on 7/31/2020 & rated 96 points: If you're reading this because you want to see if it's a good time to open your bottle, DO IT. And if it's like 5 years from now then REALLY DO IT.

This was amazing two days ago, and hot fire tonight. Smoldering damson plum tapenade, leathery old library book, gangly brambles and blackberries, balsamico [Brent25's note below nailed it], Starburst acid, wild boar ragù, pomegranate, smoking rubber tires. Can't look away! (2298 views)
Tasted by rlove on 7/28/2020 & rated 92 points: Tempier's 2010 Tourtine is one of the better vintages of this cuvée, both herbal and meaty, with a lovely finesse to the palate despite a hint of ripeness to the dark fruited flavors. Many years ahead. (Approximately 85% Mourvèdre with the remainder Grenache and Cinsault.) (2328 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 5/6/2020 & rated 92 points: Damn! One thing I love about Tempier with some age on it is that whatever you taste and smell upon opening will have approximately zero to do with how it works out three hours later. This was muted - thought maybe corked - and then it REALLY WASN'T. Needs two hours, but then it's a magnificent accompanyment to acidic spaghetti sauce and broccoli raab. Mildest amount of bandaid that faded over time. Will keep aging forever because it's Tempier. I am slightly drunk - how about you? (2447 views)
Tasted by Brent25 on 2/17/2020 & rated 91 points: Clear medium ruby; clean medium plus nose of balsamic, game, barnyard, dried black cherries, soil, black licorice and dried raspberries: high acidity; medium tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; pronounced flavour intensity; pfn with addition of tar and dark cocoa; long finish; outstanding quality; reminds us of a high acid Brunello with meaty notes (2468 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 5/24/2019 & rated 92 points: Gorgeous plum cassis asphalt tar saddle leather beauty (2160 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 1/21/2019: Pretty stinky and earthy on day one. Kept on mellowing out. Even at nine years, I guess I would give it longer and further still. (2454 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 5/18/2017: Over the years I've aged tempiers basic cuvée and been underwhelmed with the results. But not here. So I guess two fold - drink the basic cuvée young, age the single vineyards. The was explosively aromatic, extremely layered, and long. As good as any second growth Bordeaux or top chateauneuf that I've had. (3833 views)
Tasted by SkeBum on 5/28/2016 & rated 93 points: Stunning wine, balanced and well made. Wish I had bought more. (4209 views)
Tasted by Kukeymon on 5/20/2016 & rated 89 points: From the opening, this wine has impressive nose of roasted meats and earth. Modicum body flavors of red berries and currants were intensive supported by good tannic structure. Disappointingly, all the goodness dissipated over the 2-hour dinner. Otherwise, this is well made. Consume it now. (3943 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 3/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Showing great, inky juicy sleek beauty (3715 views)
Tasted by sehill on 6/13/2015 & rated 92 points: Decanted and poured, this wine remains youthful and structured. It has benefited from a few years of bottle age since its release, becoming more accessible and revealing additional nuance on the bouquet and palate. (4332 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 5/18/2015 & rated 90 points: Great juicy minerally brambly southern Rhone.. (3235 views)
(2929 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 1/28/2015 & rated 94 points: Bandols (Trent's): I liked this wine more than the group. I think they did not like the nose, the tannins and the intensity of the wine. This was the only wine on the table that really had that stink that Mourvedre can provide. Not a lot, but I love that as others find it akin to Brett. Also some dark cherries on the nose. Great texture. Juicy acidy. It is big and there are a ton of tannins. This needs to be laid down for a while IMO. It has a tight complexity right now. Revisit in five year. My WOTN. (3566 views)
Tasted by Wfjohn on 9/12/2014 & rated 90 points: Tannins somewhat limited but reasonable acidity. Dark fruit ... somewhat brooding. Wish there was a little more backbone in it. Round and plush and soft. (2950 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 2/10/2014 & rated 91 points: Tourtine '09-'11 vertical: More flamboyant than the 09 or 11. Loads of sexy spice and blueberry, raspberry, gooseberry. (3091 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/11/2014: Young Tempier-White, Rose, and Red (SF Wine Trading Company): Ruby to the rim, deeper than the Migoua. More Provencale herbs on the nose. More open as well with tremendous blueberry fruit, a meaty feel, and great acidity and length. Although I usually favor the more fleshy style of La Migoua, today I preferred this and think that it might be the best vintage of La Tourtine I've ever tasted. Really outstanding. (3124 views)
Tasted by sehill on 11/26/2013 & rated 92 points: Decanted and poured, this bottle gave an excellent showing. This wine has evolved since first tasted on release. This bottle seems more complete and approachable with the youthful fruit in the forefront and the structure resting underneath. This wine will benefit from additional bottle age. (2881 views)
Tasted by Libiamo! on 6/20/2013 & rated 89 points: Coffee ground, smoke, then black fruits, gravel, meaty note. Full bodied, medium plus acidity, medium plus finish with a lot of savoury notes, a bit too extracted for my taste. The toasty wood aromas seems a bit disjointed at this stage. Probably it needs time for everything to come together. Good, but expected a bit more from this producer. (3015 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 5/31/2013 & rated 89 points: maroon in color. blackberry, pepper, spice, earth, soil, on the aroma. oak, stem, blackberry, spice, earth, on the palate. medium acid, high tannins, on the finish. (2541 views)

Domaine Tempier

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Domaine Tempier is located at Le Plan du Castellet. Its vineyards stretch over three different communities- Le Castellet, Le Beausset and La Cadière. The plots of land are thus far apart and require extra work. But the soil of these different areas yield distinctive cuvées -Spéciale, Migoua, Tourtine and Cabassaou - as well as interesting and complex blends for white, rosé and red wines.
Domaine Tempier owns 30 hectares. It produces AOC Bandol exclusively - an average of 68% red, 29% rosé and 3% white wines, approximately 120,000 bottles per year

Domaine Tempier Bandol La Tourtine

Located near Castellet, this terroir is extremely windy but also exposed to the sun from sunrise to sunset. The soil is composed of sandstone and marl of the Santonien (75-90 Ma); gypsum can be found on the surface. Although located at the top of the hill, the soil is relatively deep with a lot of clay. The vines mature easily on the hillside favorable to mourvèdre. It is said that mourvèdre likes to look at the sea with its feet in the water (in other words with sufficient water supplies).
La Tourtine blends power and elegance. The cuvée is selected from this exceptionsl terroir of only 5.5 hectares.

COMPOSITION
Mourvèdre (~85%), with Grenache and Cinsault.

Conservation : from 5 to 20 years depending on one’s taste. And even longer if affinities…
