Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 95 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by robmatic on 6/5/2022 & rated 94 points: Meaty, bloody, wild animal nose, maybe a little horse leather. Crystallized cherry, earth, slate, mature tannin. Still has plenty of structure and muscularity. Beautiful fruit. At apogee, terrific. (1104 views)
Tasted by snaff on 7/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Dark and concentrated berry notes with aromatics of leather and earth. Rich black cherry, with tobacco layers, some characteristic Priorat menerality and a long finish with good tannic structure. (1638 views)
Tasted by CarpeVinum on 2/14/2021 flawed bottle: This one was flawed ... too bad as it was the last of a handful that I purchased. Given the age I opened the previous one just a few weeks ago and it was singing. (1799 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 10/12/2020 & rated 95 points: Second of two bottles, ten or eleven years after the first. Took over three hours on pnp to open up over the course of glasses. But comfortably worth the wait. Honestly at first I thought it was over the hill but it awoke.

The personality of pink neon on a black night. Then a camp fire; sienna. Again against something vast as the stars. Flavors: like the ideal thick, medium-rare+ grilled new york strip. So juicy. Meaty. Radiating corona of a finish. (2007 views)
Tasted by pikemasterflash on 11/16/2019 & rated 92 points: Dark and musty, leather and smooth. Going to miss these when they are gone (2175 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 9/21/2019: Very enjoyable mature red wine , very slight secondary , had some claret things going on as well , well done. (1642 views)
Tasted by johnnyo on 9/13/2019 & rated 89 points: Perhaps a little too much Bret (1286 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 9/1/2019 & rated 90 points: Dusty and dry at opening, this opened up with decanting and an hour’s rest. Medium bodied with smooth tannins. Drinking well. (1220 views)
Tasted by pikemasterflash on 6/2/2019: Always great and never disappoints (1341 views)
Tasted by pikemasterflash on 5/19/2019: Really good by itself but did not pair well with spicy Italian sausage, pumpkin puree & stuffed shells (1138 views)
Tasted by shutto1992@gmail.com on 5/3/2019 & rated 96 points: Excellent wine drinking beautifully now. PNP and the next day were both superb. (1098 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 4/5/2019 & rated 94 points: Absolutely spot on. Powerful but without being aggressive. Mature juice with tons of depth and character. Good candidate for my desert island wine. (1136 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 8/10/2018 & rated 91 points: Drinking great, seemingly on a good plateau of maturity. (1979 views)
Tasted by johnnyo on 10/21/2017 & rated 93 points: Loved It!! (2157 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 10/17/2017 & rated 93 points: No notes, but this was drinking beautifully. (2194 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 7/9/2017 & rated 95 points: All of the complexity of a 2nd growth Bordeaux. Blue and red fruits still have first chair, but the minerality plays a key role. Multiple layers. Amazing texture. A world class wine! (2303 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 6/12/2017 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby-garnet core. Lots of oak upon opening, which fortunately gives way to bright fruit (cherry, plum and peach) after some air. Medium bodied, balanced acidity and oodles of primary fruit intensity (black cherry and plum), with silky smooth tannins. The oak (which is present, but neither intrusive nor distracting) seems to turn into an intense aftertaste of peach pit, which is actually very pleasant. Length is very long. Hardly showing any age. Best bottle yet. Just wonderful. (2280 views)
Tasted by Guy Des Rosiers on 4/22/2017 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby-garnet core. Ink, violets, plum, espresso bean and asian spice on the nose. Dry, balanced acidity, with soft tannins. Very refined and well-structured, with excellent fruit intensity (plum, dark cherry) and a soft, silky finish. The oak has served the wine well and done its job; this is much more integrated than the last bottle I had a few years back, and the fruit is still vibrant and fresh. No rush to drink this, though it is in a good place at the moment, with a proper decant. (1992 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 4/12/2017 & rated 90 points: Still young. Deep fruit and cigar, but tannins are strong. Should improve. (1631 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 2/11/2017 & rated 89 points: This bottle has a muddled alcoholic character in addition to the licorice verve. My least interesting bottle of this over the last 7 years. (2022 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 1/22/2017 & rated 96 points: Amazing complexity with black cherries, potpourri and forest floor holding hands all along the way. Layers upon layers of goodness. Drinking in its prime. (1426 views)
Tasted by baucoin on 1/7/2017 & rated 95 points: Had for Layna's 50th birthday. Excellent. Smooth. Smokey in a good way. (1423 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 12/8/2016 & rated 91 points: A little sour patch red fruited character I hadn't noticed before. Drinks well, but more diffuse than it used to be. (1738 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 8/5/2016 & rated 92 points: Fresh black raspberry, red vines, mocha, and sap. Just lovely. I don't see any point in holding these though, my recent bottles are more diffuse and lack the intensity without much other development from years ago. (2073 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 5/9/2016 & rated 89 points: Same profile as always but lacking the intensity and electric energy of previous bottles and insufficient fruit to cover the considerable tannin that remains. (2263 views)

(TIRANT Rotllan Torra) Late Dear Friends, A few deals arrived late tonight that are quite interesting - all are worth a look but they are not for the shy. These are full-impact wines but they have eccentricities and a unique character that separates them from the norm. All are directly from the source with perfect provenance: 1999 Tenuta di Trenoro (Toscana) IGT(AG90) 2003 Rotllan Torra Tirant (Priorat) 1.5lt Quite rare in this format - one of the more regal wines coming out of Priorat... 2005 L & A Lignier Morey-St-Denis "Les Chaffots" 375ml (BH89-92) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Italy8699 Spain9820 Burg7055

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
