Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 75 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rwpalmer on 3/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Last and possibly best bottle of the 6 consumed over many years. The old adage about white CNdP have two drinking windows appears to hold here. The oxidation only a pleasant background note, with lovely herbal and fruity flavours to the fore--orange and fennel springing to mind. Good weight without any hollowing from age. Alcohol not showing either. A great food wine. (619 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 2/4/2023 & rated 92 points: From 75cl, perfect cork, decanted 1 hour (which it badly needed for the hefty "barnyard" [=sheey-itt] funk to blow off). Thereafter: Honey/mead-like scent, later honeysuckle, finally jasmine. Big-bodied, unctuous textured entry with white and stone fruit character and a fine acidic structure. Gently resonant, vibrating finish. After the oxidised disaster of my previous bottle (TN 27.12.2022) what a relief this one survived. Note to fellow wine-lovers: this is very sensitive to temperature. Between about 8C and 14C there is a range of gorgeous nuances to enjoy. Don't serve it straight out of the fridge! Note to producer: other, more reliable, closures are available, which would allow your customers to enjoy your expensive products unspoiled and consistently at maturity... 91-92P (742 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 12/27/2022 flawed bottle: From 75cl, cork grey and spongey 1cm back from wine end. Plausible light straw colour, but the strongly premox/oxidised smell combined unflatteringly with volatile over-ripe melon-rind aromas. This is such a gutsy, highly alcoholic (15% declared) and concentrated wine that it's (just) possible to drink it in this condition, for an 83–84P kind of experience, but pleasure is something else, at least at this price point. Hope my remaining bottle is in better shape... (776 views)
Tasted by RusisWine on 8/30/2020 & rated 90 points: Floral nose with a hint of dried fruit. Novelty wine everyone enjoyed trying. (1702 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 6/27/2020: The alcohol in this bottle was completely dominating. Maybe there was a time in the past when there was better balance, but the fruit has mostly faded and with quite a bit of oxidation it needs to be accompanied with strong food to be at all digestible. (1533 views)
Tasted by prism on 7/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Mildly oxidative in the way that Rousanne can be, more so than previous bottles. It did lose some of the unpleasant edge over the course of the evening to reveal a full bodied but earthy stone-fruit sweetness. Drink now; will not improve. (1607 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 2/16/2019 & rated 93 points: A Fine Set of Wines with Friends, Both Old and New (Los Olivos, CA): It always figures -- my last of these bottles showed the best. More energetic than its predecessors, mildly oxidative, with generous honeysuckle, cedar, white pit fruit and herbal notes. Impressive aromatic complexity, especially as the wine rose in temperature. (1987 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 12/19/2018 & rated 91 points: Syrah Night with an Expanded Version of Our Tasting Group (Bear and Star, Los Olivos, CA): Fairly advanced and oxidative, but with energetic fruit underneath. Notes of honeysuckle, cedar, white pit fruit and herbs. A few had this as WOTN. I have it at the top of the lower third myself. (1996 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 8/26/2018 & rated 89 points: One Fun-Filled Afternoon Spent Poolside with Friends (Los Olivos, CA): Others enjoyed this more than I did. Fairly advanced and oxidative, but the fruit is there still, and rounded out with air. Notes of honeysuckle, cedar, white pit fruit and herbs. Missing the energy I noted in previous bottles. Drink up. (1528 views)
Tasted by prism on 6/2/2018 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. Complex and dry: the Rousanne shows well here. With parchment-baked cod, artichokes, and kalamata olives. A hit. (1549 views)
Tasted by mattiasjansson on 2/20/2018 & rated 90 points: Rhone dinner in Boston (Boston): A bit metallic on the nose. Quince. (1951 views)
Tasted by snipes on 7/25/2016: I've enjoyed two bottles of the 06 in the past month and each showed very well. Light and fragrant without any hint of heaviness or waxiness that I find (and enjoy) in their Northern Rhone cousins. Excellent food wine and in a great place right now. (3426 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 2/7/2016: Super Bowl 2016 (Dunwoody, GA): Somber nose, waxy, honeysuckle, apple, a bit linear on the nose; expansive, sappy, more things going on in here but not sure whether I want to dig; not my style- not enough acid. (4119 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 9/20/2015 & rated 94 points: Simply magnificent. The nose showed layers of ripe pear, almond, young pecorino, lemon zest, and dried flowers. On the palate, it displayed weighty, oily textures, with notes of whole butter, spice, dried apricot, and minerals. The finish seemed to go on forever, with lanolin like coating of fruit and minerality. Why didn't I buy an entire case of this wine? (4312 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 7/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Pop & poured at too cold a temp, yet still showed well. A touch of oxidative character on the nose and palate at first, but this seemed to blow off, giving way to a refreshing, layered palate of honeysuckle, cedar, white pit fruit and herbs. A vibrant wine, brimming with energy. Not sure how many more years it has left, though, given the appearance it first gave of being quite advanced. (3868 views)
Tasted by prism on 12/25/2014 & rated 91 points: Medium body, not much nose. Very nice--paired with a vegetarian Christmas day feast--but the plastic-y character that Rousanne can sometimes impart was a little more assertive than I prefer. Quince and gooseberry notes dominate. Best with food; I'm not sure the vegetarian courses were right for the wine, but it certainly was easy for the two of us drinking the bottle to polish it off. (4040 views)
Tasted by chanukha on 11/15/2014 & rated 90 points: It really is like champagne without the bubbles. Oxidized, but retains good fruit and acidity. Might not be for everyone. (2863 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 4/15/2014 & rated 92 points: Compared to my last note I thought this to be a super wine--extremely pale and fresh, with no hint of the excessive alcohol that troubled me on an earlier bottle. (3148 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 1/19/2014 & rated 94 points: The nose was showed apple and pear with sweet spice, candle wax, sandalwood, and hints of vanilla. On the palate, it showed oily textures, stones fruits and sweet spice with a touch of heat toward the close. The finish was staying with spiced pear notes and an acid zing. (3674 views)
Tasted by prism on 8/6/2013 & rated 92 points: Light golden straw color. Medium body. The nose doesn't jump out. Citrus, honey, quince, honeydew. Drier when cold, gooseberry marmalade undertones emerge as it warms. Excellent. (3803 views)
Tasted by ChrisRCarroll7@gmail.com on 7/3/2013: Honeysuckle on the nose. Floral complexity on the nose. High alcohol, but balanced. Just a bit of hotness on the finish. Nutty taste. Good wine. (1011 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 5/4/2013 & rated 92 points: PHMG WAG: the Southern Rhones (Chez Lyon in Eugene, OR): What a delight served w/ duck fat french fries! Light gold color, it has notes of melon, flowers, minerals, spice, and a touch of tropical fruit all on an oily frame. Some said "waxy" below and that's reasonable. Maybe the fries hid the etoh from us, we loved the balance and depth. (4721 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 2/17/2013: 15% alc. Pale gold. Difficult to rate this wine. Lovely if there was 2% less alcohol--at least to my palate (my wife didn't seem troubled at all). Full-bodied as it should be, with lemon verbena and lavender hints on the nose. I'll not rush to open another bottle--this being the first of 6--with little idea whether the alcohol has any chance of integrating. Little change on night two. I'm off to try a fino for comparison.... (4080 views)
Tasted by esh44 on 11/20/2012 flawed bottle: Browned apples, sourness, and hot alcohol. What a mess... (3979 views)
Tasted by Vinomark on 10/24/2012 & rated 92 points: Solid wine with white wine cream sauce over grilled ling cod. WIll improve even more with time....keep hands off till 2015 or later! (3747 views)

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
