Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mossrose on 11/16/2014 & rated 93 points: We can now say whether the 96 point Wine Enthusiast rating was deserved. Having bought enough of this to cellar and having drunk it every year, the wine certainly has a fine balance, definite richness, and is thoroughly enjoyable, with no flaws. But, compared to top Chardonnays from Burgundy, California, South Africa, and New Zealand, it just does not make the top tier, where the wines are so irresistible that you look over at the empty bottle in disbelief and say "where did that go that fast?" Drunk with 6 other wines at the table many times, it never made the favorite of the evening either by itself or with food. What the 96+ wines have is a fireworks show with more layers of complexity, greater clarity of flavors, breathtaking drive and verve in the mouth, and a sharper spike of flavor when swallowed.  Tasted by topher2411 on 8/20/2014 & rated 93 points: A knockout. This still has plenty of primary fruit. Also delivers some beautiful smoky, spicy, and earthy notes. Great balance, and a long finish. (1349 views)
Tasted by Stirling on 7/19/2013 & rated 94 points: Yellow/gold colour. Gorgeous nose of lemon curd backed up with a hint of caramel. Full body, mild acidity, smooth palate. Terrific balance allows the intensity of the flavours not to be overwhelming. Secondary nuances of age show up since the bottle I had last year. This is one of the few New World Chardonnays that merits longer term cellaring. Outstanding. (1686 views)

Tasted by pdemaio on 2/26/2013 & rated 93 points: Big and powerful. Lovely mouth feel. Lots' of depth. Some citrus. Unctuous. Long finish. PDQ93 (1877 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 6/17/2012 & rated 93 points: Top ofthe heap for WA chard? Certainly Ceillo vineyard (and whoever gets that fruit from year to year) seems to be in competition with Dubrul for honors. This wine is more straight ahead than other WA Chards, but the balance, acid and lush mouthfeel is right on. Smooth with a long finish. This get's my vote for best of the best in WA. (1222 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 3/2/2012 & rated 91 points: Very nice; we enjoyed this. Not sure about Enthusiast's 96, but a nice wine for sure. Light golden color. Aromas of citrus, apple, yeast, and hay. Similar notes on the palate with a nice, round, and a bit creamy, mouth feel, a light touch of minerals, and medium acidity and length to the finish. Woodward Canyon

Producer website
Located in the Walla Walla Valley appellation of Washington State, Woodward Canyon Winery was started in 1981 by Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small. Since that time, the winery has consistently produced premium, award-winning cabernet sauvignons and merlots as well as chardonnays. Early on Rick determined that quality would take precedence over quantity. Consequently, Woodward Canyon has remained small, increasing its production from 1,200 cases in 1981 to our current production of about 17,000 cases. About 7,000 of this total production is Nelms Road, Woodward Canyon's second label.
Woodward Canyon is a founding member of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and of Walla Walla Valley Vinea, the Winegrower's Sustainable Trust. Woodward Canyon Winery is located in Lowden, about 13 miles west of Walla Walla, Washington. Our tasting room is a restored 1870's farmhouse.

2009 Woodward Canyon Chardonnay

Varietal Composition: 100% chardonnay
Alcohol: 14.1% by volume
Bottling Date: May 15, 2010
Production: 616 cases 750ml

Vineyards: Celilo Vineyard (64%), Columbia Gorge Appellation and Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (36%), Walla Walla Valley Appellation, Certified Sustainable by ICBO via LIVE and Salmon-Safe

Vintage Specific Characteristics:
This 2009 Washington State Chardonnay was produced from Woodward Canyon Estate chardonnay (Clone 108) in the northwestern corner of the Walla Walla Valley and chardonnay (Wente Clone) grown at Celilo Vineyard in the Columbia River Gorge. The grapes were harvested by hand, sorted, and whole cluster pressed. The yield averaged around 2.5 tons per acre, with all grapes harvested by early October. This 2009 Washington State Chardonnay reflects the greatness of the vintage. The Walla Walla Valley influence is noticeable even with a small percentage of fruit from the Estate Vineyard due to its richer character; Celilo brings the elegance and balance.

Production Notes and General Characteristics:
This wine was fermented in 100% French burgundy barrels; roughly 20% new. Beautifully mature flavors of ripe pear, apple, and peach marry perfectly with wonderful acidity. Whole cluster pressing gives delineated fruit which integrates beautifully with notes of vanilla, cream and toasted hazelnut. Finally, the oak is understated by our choice and is in wonderful proportion with the alcohol, fruit and acidity.

Fully mature fruit shows in the mouth; the texture is smooth and silky. The finish is complex, generous, and long. And while this wine may be consumed now, it will benefit substantially with a year in bottle and should continue to improve for another several years, with proper cellaring.

This style of chardonnay is done in a crisper, leaner style. The fruit comes from Celilo Vineyards as well as Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard.

Woodward Canyon's 2009 Washington State Chardonnay poured at German State Dinner, June 7, 2011
Woodward Canyon Winery of Washington State's Walla Walla Valley was honored to have their 2009 Washington State Chardonnay poured at President Obama's state dinner in honor of Her Excellency Dr. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany at the White House on June 7th.
The 2009 Chardonnay was produced from Washington State fruit grown at Celilo Vineyard in the Columbia Gorge Appellation and the Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard located in the Walla Walla Valley Appellation.
This is the second time that a Woodward Canyon Chardonnay has been served at a Presidential function. A 1992 Chardonnay was served at a luncheon hosted by President Clinton for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation which took place in Seattle in 1993.

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

Vintages
"2008 and even more so 2010 and 2011 were cool, even cold vintages (think: 2002 in the Barossa) without the extreme ripeness, extract and higher alcohol that had become the norm in the state’s post 1995 world. 2008 was manageable but the duo of 2010/2011 nearly caused a “great depression” in Washington State." - Jon Rimmerman
