Tasted by Milano on 5/4/2024: On the cusp…. (26 views)
Tasted by MDvino on 3/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Still a great bottle of wine. I would’ve said it was at its peak, but it was stronger at the end of day two (with vacuum cork). Guessing the peak window is closing though. (664 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 7/4/2019 & rated 94 points: Out of a 4L! Still tastes very young. Juicy red and dark fruits. Smooth tannins, the only thing showing it’s actual age. Great with steak. (1822 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 4/27/2019 & rated 93 points: Decanted for over two hours. This was my last bottle and although the CT drinking window end said 2019, I believe there is still a lot of life left in the tank. Medium to full body and smooth as silk. Simply lovely. Wish I had more. (2409 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 12/24/2018 & rated 94 points: Still holding strong. See previous notes. (2584 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 6/17/2018 & rated 94 points: Decanted for over an hour. Deep purple-black in hue. A lovely nose of dark plums, blackberry jam and light cigar box. The palate is rich and full bodied. The fruit remains condensed compact and up front with hints of wet stones and cedar on the finish. A lovely wine and great accompaniment to grilled steak. (3063 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 10/29/2017 & rated 93 points: Napa on the nose, bordeaux on the palate. Inky, rich nose of black fruit, soft and balanced, with good complexity. Drinking well now with no rush, but offering up a lot and would drink over the next 5 years or so. Better than expected. (3204 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 10/19/2017 & rated 95 points: Had with grilled rib eye. Decanted for 2+ hours. This was a phenomenal pairing. The wine is full bodied and inky. Color: deep purple to black (5/5); Nose: dark fruit, bramble and cassis. (9/10); Palate: Big, unctuous, meaty and lovely. Fruit is huge with a resolute tannic backbone. (17/20); Finish: long and lush with a mild tannic bite (9/10); Age potential: This wine has a lot of life left in her. I could see it going another 8-10 years. (5/5) = 45 + 50 = 90 (2515 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 10/15/2017 & rated 95 points: Two bottles. See previous notes. (1960 views)
Tasted by Nacnud on 10/14/2017: Based on my only bottle of this I would drink this now. Or, if you have more than one check it out and see where your stash is at. Mine was more than ready, mostly bouquet and not very exciting until I paired it with Filet Mignon. Then it got up on it's hind legs! (1571 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 7/30/2017 & rated 95 points: This wine is in a great place right now. A fantastic accompaniment to steak. Great mouth feel with a soft persistent finish. (1134 views)
Tasted by tlnewbs on 1/13/2017 & rated 83 points: Very nice. Drinking well right now. (1637 views)
Tasted by DugyDog on 7/4/2016 & rated 92 points: Dead on big Napa Cab (2133 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 4/21/2016 & rated 91 points: Took this wine to Flemings Steak House. Decanted for over an hour. Great with bone in rib eye. (1995 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 2/13/2016 & rated 92 points: See previous note. A crowd pleaser at blind tasting in my cellar. (2236 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 2/13/2016 & rated 92 points: Presented this wine in an eclectic flight during a blind tasting with a 2 hour decant. It was easy to identify this iconic Napa cab for all of its characteristics. A well liked wine by the 16 people in attendance. Big fruit forward nose and palate. Big, dark and brambly on the attack with some chalky tannins on the back palate. Should continue to soften with another year or two in the cellar. (2097 views)
Tasted by portley2 on 12/4/2015 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed with some ripe cheese and the 06 is tasting fine now (2083 views)
Tasted by LoveMyWine on 9/28/2015: Disappointing not very exciting not worth money (1905 views)
Tasted by Fire Bill on 8/16/2015 & rated 95 points: Decanted for about an hour prior to drinking with rib eye. Overall a great wine for dinner, but I think this wine would be just as good without food. As mentioned before, this has a big brooding nose of dark fruit, purple in color with a crimson rim. Seemless on the palate. Dark plum, currant, a touch of lavender and a little bit of chocolate. Long finish, leaves you wanting more. There was a little fine sediment in the glass. This is prime for drinking now or will hold up for 5-8 more years. (1877 views)
Tasted by ozziewine on 3/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Gave it 90 minutes of air. This is an interesting wine (which, when referring to a wine someone else brought, can be code for "not very good"...though that's not the case here). After trying it in the Cab, Syrah, Zin glasses (Reidel), I settled on the Pinot Glass.

That seems fitting, given that this Cab strikes me more as a Pinot. It's lighter in style for a Cab, well structured and has decent fruit. And as the previous review mentioned, a great nose!

IMO, drink this if you're in the mood for a lighter Cab or a heavier Pinot that's very mellow. That's not what I was expecting, but it's what I got and it was very nice! (2228 views)
Tasted by glapuyade on 1/21/2015 & rated 94 points: Intensely perfumed with violet colored flowers and clean pure red and black berry on the nose. Spice and amazing complexity on the palate showcase a wine that is still entirely youthful. (2327 views)
Tasted by Vabene on 1/7/2015 & rated 89 points: unexpectedly good, after a mediocre first impression. After 45 min turned into a fine wine, good purple color, hints of cassis and cherry. (2274 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 8/24/2014 & rated 93 points: Had in a Napa flight from '03 to '08. This wine continues to deliver. Will be drinking the rest of my holdings sparingly. A very well made wine. (2619 views)
Tasted by East of Napa on 5/22/2014 & rated 90 points: Wow much better than expected (2805 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 5/12/2014 & rated 90 points: See previous note. Had with Coleen and Walt at Flemmings Steakhouse with porcini rubed filet mignon. (2483 views)

Nickel & Nickel

Producer website

The Nickel & Nickel winery, founded in 1997 but born from a tradition of exceptional winemaking, is devoted to creating wines that articulate the singular expressions of the vineyards in Oakville and beyond.

Established by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is based on a philosophy of producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. The winery’s current releases include Napa Valley Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Syrah and Zinfandel.

Nickel & Nickel represents a distinct departure from the flagship Far Niente estate wines that are produced from a combination of vineyards and varietals. The partners also felt it necessary to have a winemaker devoted to each winery – Far Niente, Dolce and Nickel & Nickel -- in order to produce the quality wines that are their hallmark. These factors, along with a noticeable upsurge in the market’s interest in vineyard-designated wines, led to the launch of Nickel & Nickel as a separate brand.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
