Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 38 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by John McCabe on 3/31/2024 & rated 92 points: Feels overpriced, though pleasant enough. May benefit from more time. Has a somewhat cool profile, not that rich. (441 views)
Tasted by Yondan on 9/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Nose: Aromas of both red and black cherry. Currant and a bit of eucalyptus or mint and a little butterscotch.

Taste: Plentiful red and black fruits on the pallet. I got cherry, raspberry, plumb, licorice, leather and spice. This was a medium bodied wine with soft tannins and bright acidity. Had a velvety smooth mouth feel.

Overall: This is a well-balanced wine. Not your typical big bold, full-bodied Napa Cab. This was a leaner wine. It was quite sophisticated and seemed to made more like an old world Bordeaux than a lush Napa wine. It was a pleasure to drink (762 views)
Tasted by bryon m on 1/27/2023 & rated 92 points: Good color and body. Complex, big! I really enjoyed it. (1121 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 11/19/2022 & rated 93 points: Pop and pour. Aromas of blackberry, vanilla, currant, lead pencil and iron. Flavors of blackberry, currant, black cherry, mocha and bit of iron. Ends with a 25-30 second finish with mocha and blackberry notes. Served a bit cool but drinking quite nice for a pop and pour. (1330 views)
Tasted by Oberhau on 5/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Great Napa cab; through the dark fruit, I pick up the cedar on the nose; color is dark, body medium; sweet fruit on the tip gives way to silky but significant tannins coating the entire tongue, especially at the end of the bottle. Great with grilled filet mignon. (1922 views)
Tasted by VinoViking on 4/3/2022 & rated 95 points: Holy cats was that good! Deep dark berries with that Stags Leap dusting. Just an iconic Napa Cab. Really good now. (1850 views)
Tasted by Franken Berry on 3/7/2022 & rated 93 points: Always consistent, never disappoints. Medium richness, smooth, balanced. Terrific black and red ruins, nice acidity, spice, salinity, crushed stones. Would not hesitate to purchase this at a restaurant or share with friends (2179 views)
Tasted by cdp1276 on 10/21/2021 & rated 93 points: Showing extremely well right now and throughly enjoyed over 3 hours of watching Dune! (1925 views)
Tasted by mwgdc on 6/19/2021: Lot of fruit. Needs lots of decant time
Doyle wedding (2031 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 6/12/2021 & rated 94 points: Sitting out on the patio, listening to the loud cacophonous cicadas, swatting a few away as they just come crashing in to you! 😡. But it’s all ok because of this purple colored, opulent, rich and deeply layered SLD cab by CL! Lush black fruits, cocoa, warming spices like cloves, fennel, nutmeg soothing your palate with pleasure with every sip. Tannins are soft and sweet leading to a beautiful finish! Cheers Cliff Lede SLD Cab. Boo Cicadas! (1768 views)
Tasted by boston617 on 3/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Very balanced. Grassy nose with jammy and chocolate notes. (2318 views)
Tasted by bgjenkins on 12/13/2020 & rated 90 points: Great wine. Enjoyed it with some socially distanced friends with a big steak. No real tasting notes - but as others have said, it is young. We decanted for a solid 2 hours. Fairly primary, but like most Cliff Lede's should be better from here. (2894 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 12/5/2020 & rated 90 points: Way young even on the 2nd day. Good stuffing but a bit closed and tannic. Nice body. Give it a year or more. (2356 views)
Tasted by Sine Qua Ben on 10/25/2020 & rated 86 points: Way young. Needs several more years (2282 views)
Tasted by wine4lux on 6/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Another 2017 Napa cab that exceeded my expectations. Very dark purple color- blackberry and smoke on the nose. I should have known better and opened the wine 45 minutes earlier. So the first glass had hints of bitterness at the onset, which dissipated quickly. Once open, the wine became approachable quickly with cedar, cocoa and vanilla notes adding to the black fruit and smoke. Well done. (2830 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 6/9/2020 & rated 91 points: Dark purple color. On the nose, I get dark currant, black cherries, with smoky earth, tar, charcoal, graphite, with notes of vanilla. On the palate, this is full-bodied, velvety but structured, fresh acidity provides a mouthwatering aspect throughout. Juicy black currants and blueberries with complex notes of graphite, mocha, anise, sweet coffee, black tea. Some earthy, savory undertones will come out more with age (3-5 would do nicely), but this is beautiful stuff. Aged 21 months in 65% new French oak. (2424 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
