Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 95 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by klezman on 4/20/2024: This was excellent. About as tannic and youthful as I'd expect from a well made Syrah, especially from the mountain. STarted with purple and black fruits, evolved to have more meat and floral notes. Should have a long life ahead of it still. (53 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 1/21/2023 & rated 90 points: Medium red color. Aromas of black cherries, violets and black pepper.. Medium-bodied fruit in the mouth with good depth and length and fully integrated tannins. Despite being from magnum, and not oxidized, but a bit thin and basic on the palate for a Lagier Meredith syrah. (860 views)
Tasted by Backdoctor on 5/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Big red that opened up after an hour. still some life in it. (1084 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 9/16/2021 & rated 92 points: Extracted, yet not syrupy. Acid plus, and lean. I gave the score to the structure of the wine; it lacks delicious factor. (1308 views)
Tasted by konadog on 8/8/2021 & rated 90 points: This is deceptive. Upon opening, it’s pretty tight and a lot of gnarly, bramble, forest notes. After an hour more blackberry, smoked meats; and a little eucalyptus on the finish. (1321 views)
Tasted by btock on 7/30/2021 & rated 90 points: Wow, and phew. Such a different drinking experience than the previous bottle. This was back on form. Tight fruit core than opened up with air and in the glass. Very precise black currant and boysenberry core, not much in the way of secondary aromatics, these continue to impress upon me the need for patience and bottle age. Good showing, had opened with low expectations given the odd condition of the prior bottle. (1289 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 5/30/2021: Is this Syrah from the Northern Rhône or California? The nose takes you to the Rhône with its aromas of raspberry, olive brine, black pepper, and flowers. The palate has tart berries, minerals, black olives, and only the brightness of the fruit will have you thinking California. This is an excellent Syrah, and for me, it is drinking at peak. (966 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 12/14/2020 & rated 90 points: Acid plus and medium weight, which is commendable for Napa. good fruit. (872 views)
Tasted by jcha24 on 8/23/2020: No rush on this. Drinking great. (1134 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 5/30/2020: Second bottle was possibly even worse than the first. Basically undrinkable. (995 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 5/30/2020: Same experience as some others have had recently with this vintage. On first taste with a Coravin it was just all tart acidity, with no fruit. I thought it might have been oxidized, but just to make sure I popped the cork, poured some more and gave it a good swirl. However it actually seemed get a bit better after some air, so maybe that wasn't the problem. The second day though it was even worse, so I ended up dumping it. Incidentally, the cork did seem a bit on the soft and spongey side, so that may have been a contributing factor. I have one more bottle, so I'll see if that one is similar. (966 views)
Tasted by btock on 5/27/2020 & rated 84 points: After seeing a CT note from another palate I trust on this wine, thought I better open one and see what was going on. Upon opening, really no nose at all. How is that possible? I often give Lagier Meredith syrahs a good decant to wake them up, but typically there is something enticing there at the beginning. On the palate, tart and sharp, not the profile I expect of this wine. Came back to the bottle a couple days later by then there was some more usual purple fruit showing through, but this wasn't a good showing, and certainly not in keeping with other vintages that I have enjoyed tremendously. (899 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 4/24/2020 & rated 50 points: I'm looking for guidance. I don't think that a 12 year old syrah from Napa should be dead. But this is the 2nd bottle from this producer that was. So that is not a flaw, that is the way the wine was made. At 12 years old it is no longer drinkable. My fault for holding it too long? (885 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 1/24/2020 & rated 90 points: Smooth, integrated held up to a ribeye well. Soft compared to a Cabernet but not an overpowering Syrah. I don't think this has any further ageworthy life in it.

Tasted by brigcampbell on 1/1/2018: New Years 2018: Very dark maroon. Light oak nose / stem and black fruit aromas. A hint of black olive. Palate shows tar and tons of herbs. Dark ripe plum and iodine. (2604 views)
Tasted by Meembo on 10/21/2017: Deep, dark nose of stewed plum and black cherry, complemented by black olive and white pepper. The palate shows fresh cracked pepper and ripe plum. This Syrah still has fine, silky tannins through the finish of dried herbs and red cherry. Delicious, and highlights why this is probably my favorite California Syrah. (2351 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 10/13/2017: It just seemed right to open this tonight and it is delicious. Juicy with deep dark cherry and black olive. It is 100% California with glimpses of Northern Rhone. (2222 views)
Tasted by Todd French on 6/23/2017: The final of my Lagier Meredith flight from BerserkerDay, and the best of the 6-bottle set, for sure. This Syrah is shockingly bright in character - almost tart, but not 'sour', per se. It's like that peach that is perhaps one day away from absolute perfection, and you can tell that it will be the precise compilation of sweet, tart, juicy, and full of flavor.

If I had more of this wine, I'd be quite happy to wait 1-2 more years, yet it's tremendous right now as well. Gotta love that mountain fruit, and the expertise of those who create this wine. The qualities of Syrah are all present - darker fruit profile, rich earth, red meat, but the brightness of the fruit is really a special treat, and continues to reward you sip after sip, surprising you each time with the bright brambly fruit. Fortunately I saved half a bottle, preserved with gas, so I can enjoy it with a little more 'age' on it ;) (2978 views)
Tasted by Brownvino on 10/13/2016 & rated 90 points: Opened and decanted for 2 hours. Very dark color and taste of black and blue fruit. One of the mellower syrahs I have enjoyed (3274 views)
Tasted by lolo66 on 12/4/2015 & rated 93 points: tight as a drum and disjointed upon opening. But the compact bud of something has me curious to see what develops... 2nd day. really bright, juicy, vibrant, floral, violets, some darker fruits, but with energy. zero bret, poo. Very clean and just what i was in the mood for. I am sick of bretty wines lately. (2948 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 11/5/2015 & rated 88 points: Bacon, truffles, cedar, spices and crushed rock. Not a lot of fruit on this wine. Medium finish and somewhat simple. Underwhelmed. (2704 views)
Tasted by kenhoeve on 7/27/2015 & rated 93 points: PnP. Immediately marked by cured meat, smoke, and lifted fruit that leaves the impression of berries. Know this is young, but wanted to gauge one. The way it unfolds with salt, stone, cured meats, and berries is seamless and balanced in the contrast of dark and lighter elements. The acid is quiet and integrated, evolving as slow as the wine is prone to do. Brilliant finish of fine charcuterie and berry preserves that is long. Smashing with thin slices of salami. Lots of time to go on this one, let's see what day two brings. (3064 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 1/21/2015 & rated 91 points: SO much better than my last bottle 2 years ago. And I think it will get better with a few more years laying down. Black in the glass. Dark fruit (with some blueberry). Also has pepper and smoke notes with medium finish and nice balance. (3157 views)
Tasted by Mbressack on 8/6/2014 & rated 93 points: Wow! What a nice surprise. Neutral nose. Dark red nearly black in color. Smokey with blackberry tones; velvety palate texture, and great balance. Beautiful long finish although a bit young. (3195 views)
Tasted by River Rat on 12/30/2013: Nearly black in color, blackberry, black pepper, black olive, cigar smoke, black cherry nose. Smoky blackberry, charcoal, boysenberry liquid velvet texture, grippy tannins, wonderful balance. Nose picked up some leather after bring open 6 hrs. Finished on day 2. Still very young, like a puppy with huge paws. You see the potential. (3950 views)

Lagier Meredith

Producer website

"Syrah is our flagship wine. We’ve grown it since we began in 1994. Our vineyard site, with shallow rocky soil derived from an ancient uplifted seafloor and bathed in cool marine air from the nearby San Pablo Bay, brings out the best of Syrah’s savory, spicy, and floral attributes. Our wines are balanced, complex and long-lived. They reflect the restraint imposed on the vines by our mountain setting."

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
