Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 33 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kostaslonis on 5/7/2022: Brought to drink at Oinoscent during service
The bottle was decanted at 18:50, tasted at 19:20
The wine shows pale hazy red cherry color
In the nose, the wine shows fully developed profile, dried red cherry, red currant, sous bois, earthy, dried herbs, cigar box, sweet spices, cinnamon, bacon/cured meat after a bit of time.
In the palate, the wine looks fully developed, coffee, chocolate notes, sweet spices, dried red cherries, lean body, a touch hot, dissolved tannins, a few dried herbs, medium finish
It seems that decanting its not really needed.
I don't think it would benefit from further ageing. (977 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 12/31/2019: Eastman. Coming into its drinking window. Nose especially expressive with fruit and some violet. Good dollop of tannin remains. Enjoyed with duck leg confit and duck breast in a tart cherry sauce. I'll save my last one for another 2-3 years. (1748 views)
Tasted by robferguson1 on 11/27/2016 & rated 90 points: This rated 93 with Tanzer but I beg to differ, nice plumby wine with fair length , dense color , not much sign of age. Ok (3115 views)
Tasted by ulyon on 4/23/2016 & rated 92 points: still wonderful
It was more 93-94 on the last bottles . (3377 views)
Tasted by ulyon on 4/23/2016: Still wonderful and has 2 or 3 years (3470 views)
Tasted by ilee on 6/24/2014 & rated 93 points: Another nice bottle of this excellent N Rhone Syrah that is just drinking nicely at 10 years of age (4136 views)
Tasted by ludwigbpm on 6/1/2014 & rated 93 points: Sans notes (3610 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 5/21/2014 & rated 92 points: De Olivier
Nez moderne et fruité, frais et herbacé, avec de la profondeur. Tres beau cin que je mettais sur une CR de Guigal, excellent, léger mais profond. 92 pts (2587 views)
Tasted by ilee on 1/6/2014 & rated 93 points: Opened at home in HK as an antidote to 2 weeks of Aussie pinots and chards down under. Consistent with previous TN, very fine and balanced, a pleasure to drink. (2352 views)
Tasted by ilee on 11/1/2013 & rated 93 points: Terrific, rich bouquet of the classic N Rhone school. Dried plum, mineral gravel, game, medicinal root notes abound. Medium to full bodied, with a tinge of viscosity that gives it a certain velvety roundness in the finish. I am fully with RP on this one, excellent wine and excellent value (2380 views)
92 pts (2036 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 12/30/2012 & rated 90 points: Not overly dark; sleek black fruits; full of freshness, delineated; really well balanced. Can be drunk now or next 5 years. (1801 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 12/20/2012 & rated 90 points: Deep, saturated garnet color. Strong oak scents mix with inky red and black fruits. Powerful juice yet shows some complexity and there is a nice mineral element. A chunky, meaty wine. Round, full and really drinking well right now. This bottling has gotten much better recently IMO. This 04 shows too heavy a hand for my taste - I have not gotten this as much recently. Still for a wine that has this much dressing, it is a good drink. (90) (1877 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 6/14/2012 & rated 91 points: Ready to go and firing strong. A lush texture that frankly shows a lot of oak (a bit too much) supports dark fruit and a long finish. Clearly high quality but a little over manipulated in my mind. The La La’s can handle it – don’t know if this vineyard can. (91) (2219 views)
92 pts (2324 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 10/12/2011 & rated 91 points: 2011 Wine & Spirits Top 100 Tasting (City View at Metreon, San Francisco, California): Dark purple red violet color; rich, spicy, tart berry, roasted black fruit nose; tasty, oak, tart berry, roasted black fruit palate; medium-plus finish 91+ points (2667 views)
Tasted by Cellarmaster on 3/31/2011 & rated 93 points: 2004 produced an almost Burgundian version of this wine. Elegant, restrained, but so well made. In a vertical of this wine with th 2005, this wine stood out because of its elegance and approachability. Where the 2005 was big, bold and in your face. The 2005 will be a terrific wine in 10 years, but for dinners that I am having now, the 2004 is the choice. L'Hospice is a very interesting vineyard. Always one of my favorites..

To quote the importer: This wine originates from two steeply terraced vineyards which Guigal now owns or controls through the purchase of the De Vallouit and Grippat domaines. “Vignes de L’Hospices” is a tiny, steep vineyard perched high above the town of Tournon in perhaps the best part of the St. Joseph appellation. It is owned by the local Hospice, and the vines are leased to Guigal on a long-term basis. To this cuvée is added part of the production of the vineyard “Les Anges” (the Angels), which previously had belonged to the de Vallouit domaine. This vineyard is located above the Hospices, rising nearly to the top of the extraordinarily steep slope above the town. Together with the Lieu Dit Le St. Joseph, these are arguably the finest vineyards in the AC.

In recognition of the quality of these vineyards, Guigal vinifies this 100% Syrah wine in the same fashion as his Cru Côte Rôties. After fermentation, it is aged for 30 months in 100% new barrels, clarified by racking only, and bottled unfiltered. Production is quite limited. Although Guigal’s first vintage of this wine was 1999 (the first entirely vinified by him was 2001), this wine has already set a new quality standard for St. Joseph (2686 views)
Tasted by godx on 3/15/2011 & rated 82 points: WineFanatic Northern Rhone Offline (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – Wow, this is different. Dark, ripe and over oaked. Very creamy nose of vanilla and ripe sweet cherries that one taster noted was reminiscent of an Aussie shiraz/viognier blend. More of the same on the palate with gobs of oak and rich sweet fruit. Not what I expected when the wine was revealed. Definitely not my cup of tea. Average. (2771 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 1/21/2011: Dark and concentrated. Exotic nose. Ripe and concentrated, wood in evidence. Everyone else at the table loved it and I rather liked it even though it seemed more Australian than northern Rhone. The richness was really a nice match for roasted duck breast. It will be interesting to see how it develops. (2268 views)
Tasted by Meeko on 11/26/2009: Well developed bottle which drank well once rested and given time to breath (2665 views)
Tasted by ekenneth on 10/10/2009 & rated 93 points: This wine had brilliant flavor of blackberries, with a mocha chalkiness, and still, I got a fragrant, herbal quality. This is an outstanding wine that will only get better. (2704 views)
Tasted by BradE on 12/8/2008: Second bottle of this - good stuff for the price and very enjoyable. (2797 views)
91-93 pts (2827 views)
Tasted by BradE on 2/6/2008: Decent young Rhone, and good QPR. Not a wine for ageing, I would drink over the next few years. (3026 views)
Tasted by jusuf on 1/2/2008 & rated 92 points: Clearly too young. Also weaker than the 2003.....who's surprised? Massive but still unfinished. Creme de cassis, spices, smoky notes. Lots of coffee on the palate. (179 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
