Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 127 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by halfred on 2/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Amazing that this wine has held up so well for 19 years. Still firm and intact (with excellent cellar conditions). Whiffs of the cab franc led with some grassy jalapeño that integrated quickly into the cab sauv with some air. Still rich, solid, and good grip. (715 views)
Tasted by blank blank on 2/20/2023 & rated 85 points: Weird wine - a combination of an odd, confected saccharine sweetness with a decidedly green undertone. The black cherry says Howell Mountain, the still-noticeable oak says vaguely modern; but the weird diet soda sweetness is a new one for me. I dumped; my wife gagged; your mileage might vary. (942 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 9/26/2022 & rated 93 points: We love this blend of Napa Valley 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon accented by the structure, grip and spice of 40 percent Cabernet Franc. At eighteen years this was wonderful, probably at the apex of its drinking window, but likely with a decade of life still left. The fill level, label and cork were all pristine.

Dark garnet colored, medium full bodied and firmly structured ripe black raspberry fruits with notes of coffee, mocha, leather, graphite, sweet oak and spice with firm gripping but elegantly smooth polished tannins on the long finish.

Tasted by Martyl9 on 7/26/2020 & rated 91 points: half bottle, purchased about 10 years ago. maybe in the NH liquor store in Portsmouth. still had a nice taste on opening but faded after an hour.
nice glass of wine. (808 views)
Tasted by wiscgrad on 8/13/2017 & rated 94 points: Drinking beautifully right now. Decanted for1 hour and then consumed over the next 2.5 hours. Violets on the nose. Lively acidity and red and blue fruit. Howell mountain fruit coming through. No signs of falling apart. (3096 views)
Tasted by Dooms on 6/24/2017 & rated 61 points: Drank on 6/25/17. Cork was very difficult to remove. Past its end drink date. A small amount of fruit, more European in character with lots of tobacco, leather and earthy flavors. Definitely not my style, although it was Okay, finished the bottle. Would recommend drinking during it's prime. (3191 views)
Tasted by rwstorer on 8/18/2016 & rated 94 points: Drinking beautifully after 30 minutes of air. Similar notes to previous. (4189 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 5/8/2016 & rated 92 points: Still going strong. (4229 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 11/23/2015 & rated 94 points: Right in line with previous notes on well integrated, seamless bottles. This continues to rest on its plateau and give great balance of fruit, earth, herb and stone notes. This bottle was perhaps showing more un-integrated oak than others which placed it just below the best bottles I have had. (4552 views)
Tasted by Sugarb on 5/23/2015 & rated 90 points: Has seen its better days. Medium red color, tannins significantly subsided, almost to the point of losing structure. (2942 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 4/29/2015 & rated 94 points: Received as a gift. Just a stellar Napa Bordeaux style blend! (2708 views)
Tasted by curtr on 4/17/2015 & rated 91 points: Drinking at its peak now. Full bodied, should hold for 2 more years. (1990 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 3/11/2015 & rated 89 points: very good. sweet red fruit on the nose. not particularly notable - well made but perfume, fruit, finish were all very good but nothing stood out. (1737 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 3/7/2015 & rated 94 points: PHMG WAG Blind Pairs: Old World vs. New (Lyon Den): Just great out of a magnum. Garnet rim, aged Cab / Franc nose with a floral note hanging over the plum, berries, mocha, and herbs. Very silky and long. I had a 1/2 glass before the tasting so I knew which was which in the blind pair -- cheater! 93 on day 2. On plateau, now-2019 in this format. (1776 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 2/11/2015 & rated 93 points: Not quite on the same level as recent bottles, but the quality was definitely there. Showing tighter than others and somewhat less evolved. (1422 views)
Tasted by mkubow on 1/24/2015 & rated 96 points: Excellent and in its prime. (1218 views)
Tasted by miadelt on 1/11/2015 & rated 92 points: Very solid wine all around. Has typical Napa characteristics. (1164 views)
Tasted by kakpoo on 12/12/2014: drank from a 375ml and it was in a good place. (1229 views)
Tasted by Whodeyinsea on 11/29/2014: Not fruit bomb, but not Bordeaux. Just another great wine from the Viader family. Drinking great right now. (1252 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 6/2/2014 & rated 93 points: Consistant with prior tasting notes. this wine is drinking perfectly. I gave it a 3.5 hour decant and it sings. beautiful. see my previous notes for details. soft baked cherry and wood. (1981 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 4/24/2014: Some Napa CS (Vila Viniteca - Madrid): Peppery nose maybe a little floral and fruity. Mineral? Excepting if we're talking of river stones. No way Jose! Time offers a coke, citrus smelling...
Tannic and quite long. Echoes of that nose. Sincerely would prefer more elegance. Fine but where is density? Where that supposed perfume?

Pimentada nariz, quizá un poco floral y afrutada. ¿Mineral?
(2907 views)
Tasted by RockinCabs on 3/4/2014 & rated 95 points: Remains exceptional and consistent with December notes. Perhaps more fruit on this example. This should be on plateau here for a few years and represents what viader can achieve in the best years. Complex, incredible mouthfeel and balance. (2372 views)
Tasted by MaximusT on 3/2/2014 & rated 94 points: The day we bought this wine we drove on ice and snow up a mountain to the Viader winery. Now, 11 years later we sit by a warm fire with the wine decanted in front of us. Definitely the adventure we had getting to Viader adds to the greatness of this wine. Unlike the icy road this wine is easy. You can almost forget what you are drinking, it is subtle, it is clean...just easy. Dry, it coats your palate and lingers well after you swallow. The strawberries are ever so present, but the long linger begins to darken into something more seductive. Deep fruit, fig, pomegranate and cloves take hold. We would happily climb the icy mountain again to have more of this juice, as this is our last bottle. (We had our pregnant friend drive us back down, in case you were concerned about our safety). (2178 views)
Tasted by Eags25 on 1/18/2014 & rated 89 points: Dark dried berries, charcoal, herbs and a prickly texture and drying tartness on the finish. Finish turns chalky & charcoal Should be great but doesn't come together to be seamless and elegant. Does have some time left (2 - 3 year) but not sure it will get any better. (1957 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
