Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.6 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wineton.mee on 12/8/2023 & rated 95 points: Ripe plums, dark roses, Provençal herbs; this is really fleshy, glossy and sensual stuff. The stuffing is immense and the wine was showing beautifully from the first pour. Thought it had a little bit of everything (heat, alcohol, fruit, development etc) and very much in balance. Up there amongst the very best Giacosas I’ve tasted. (1249 views)
Tasted by Michael T. Zoppo on 7/26/2023 flawed bottle: While I can't put my finger on the exact fault, I've had this wine a few times and this bottle wasn't representative. Dull nose (no "fruitcake" shooting from the glass), and on the palate the fruit seemed a bit cooked and flat. A wine I perhaps most looked forward to at the tasting, but alas. Only good bottles. I'm tagging flawed because this wine *can* be amazing. (1947 views)
Tasted by kenv on 7/26/2023: [Double-decanted around 9am.] While decanting, the perfume is amazing. (1865 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 6/12/2023 & rated 96 points: blind
I guessed the region right but no idea of vintage. Lovely aged Barolo, for me close to his peak. Roses, tar, violet and some dark cherries. 96 (2475 views)
Tasted by GuWin on 5/25/2023 & rated 94 points: BYO Litteraturhuset "Best Wine": Ungdommelig, klar middels dyp rød farge. (2073 views)
Tasted by Lipsman on 2/26/2023 & rated 93 points: First two bottles were corked. Third bottle was the charm. Aroma of licorice, bricking at the edge, translucent garnet throughout. Still tight! Needed an hour to open up a bit. Elegance and balance which elevates the dominant flavors of roses and anise. Still some tannin. Good for another 10 years. Give it a minimum of two hours in a decanter. (2213 views)
Tasted by Lipsman on 2/25/2023 flawed bottle: Two bottles corked. Strange pine smell from both corks. I’ve never smelled anything like this before. Wine tight at first, then after 20 minutes a bitterness emerged, then finally the must of a corked wine. (1574 views)
Tasted by jamesabdavis on 10/13/2022: Tight nose, deep red fruit, fresh herbs, caramel.
Rich, fresh, red-fruited on the palate.
Some dry tannin on the finish. (2013 views)
Tasted by canan on 10/1/2022 & rated 98 points: 50th Birthday Tasting (Vesterbro): Elegant and refined with loads of intense red berries and so much to love. The tannins are very refined while still feeling young and when tasted blind, it was surprisingly not obvious as a Barolo. In general, this is just a huge wine that needs more time in the bottle.
The only reason why this wine didn't get the maximum score is because the Monfortino was served next to it :-) (2106 views)
Tasted by apg23 on 9/14/2022 & rated 92 points: Very good Barolo. I’m not sure it is worth the price good, but it is a pleasure to drink. (2029 views)
Tasted by Marcus Vin Rouge on 8/21/2022 & rated 97 points: Great wine. Will develop 5-10 years depending on taste preferences. (1711 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 5/14/2022 & rated 95 points: Gorgeous. At the same delicate and rich. The fruit of the forest, more red than black is rich, the structure is still strong, classic barolo but ethereal in the way Giacosa is. Extraordinary.
Long huge complexity. Now and over next 10 to 15 years. (1583 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 10/15/2021 & rated 95 points: Just a fabulous wine. No hard edges and lovely rose petals and earthiness with a long finish. (3406 views)
:p (3322 views)
Tasted by Robmcl920 on 1/16/2021 & rated 97 points: The '04 Rocche is an insanely beautiful wine in the making. I found it very young at this stage and it required some coaxing to taste, so I would say it is 5-10 years at least away from early peak. That said, the sweetness of the fruit and textural elegance of the wine are on full display already. This is a Barolo with power, yet it is also sweet and silky on the palate.

On the nose, I found very sweet, dark red fruit, violets, roses, spices, tar, and a hint of balsamic. On the palate, the wine was dense, yet seemingly weightless and with no perception of tannin. The fruit shows a beautiful sweetness and perfume. I found dark red and purple toned fruits, red floral tones, exotic spices, and balsamic, with violet, spice, and balsamic lingering on the long finish. The most impressive part about the wine at this stage was the texture and the sweetness; the texture was both rich and enveloping and perfectly silky smooth.

Compared to the white label Falletto, I found the riserva to have more sweetness in the fruit and more finessed tannins, which are almost imperceptible here. (4936 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 3/1/2020 & rated 95 points: Chassagne, Red Label and Chave (S.K.Y.): Much like the 04 Asili in the prior flight -- this is so big and powerful, and just packed with potential. Full nose has red cherry, plum, licorice and herbs. The palate is rich and quite chewy still. Plenty of fruit and structure, just not yet in total harmony. Plenty of upside from here. (6378 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/1/2020: Chassagne Grandes-Ruchottes Dinner with Some Giacosa and Chave (S.K.Y. Restaurant - Chicago IL): Opened and decanted 5 hours before serving, which really helped. Great aromatic start, showcasing floral, red cherry, anise, black pepper, allspice and mint notes. Similar flavors, just not quite as charming today or completely accessible, this is just getting close to its peak drinking window, will be much more enjoyable in another decade, and will be exciting for many decades to come. 94 points today, 95-96 point potential. (6181 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 6/23/2019 & rated 95 points: SLDS at Quay: Blind. Smoke, cherry, liquorice, roses, spice, floral notes and tea leaves. Composed palate, the tannins are full but the fruit has density and drive. Powerful with huge potential to develop further. (5491 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/12/2018: Still a very young wine. Lots of tannins. There's a prettiness though underneath all of the structure. More floral. Very tasty. A wine that you'd like to revisit in many years. (6894 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 8/11/2018 & rated 95 points: A little hot on the nose, a little bitter on the finish, but great depth, still needs a lot of time. After a few hours it started to fulfill its promise. (5503 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 1/10/2018 & rated 95 points: A Study of Falletto di Serralunga (La Pizza Fresca): It’s amazing as I look back on my notes to realize that I rated the ‘04 Falletto over the Riserva--but that’s exactly what happened. The theme of the vineyard, vintage and winemaker rang true between both bottles. Here I found a dark and rich display of black cherry, sweet herbs, crushed stone minerality and forest floor. On the palate, soft textures gave way to zesty black cherry and spice with crystalline tannic structure and sweet inner floral tones. The finish was long and structured with dried red berries and lasting minerality. (8118 views)
Tasted by robertek on 12/16/2017 & rated 96 points: Massive yet still more refined and available than the Falletto. World class in the making - well there already today I guess. (6376 views)
Tasted by MauriceE on 12/31/2016 & rated 99 points: Stunningly great again. Decanted hours before drinking and still growing in the glass. What a wine! (8275 views)
Tasted by clarktoews on 11/6/2016 & rated 85 points: very disappointed in this wine. super tart and almost sour. no fruit on the nose just an aggressive tart note. almost poured it down the sink but let it decant for 3hrs and it softened a bit. had one glass and will revisit tonight.
ok, let this sit for two days and it was better for sure. the upfront tartness was gone and it was more fruit fwd with some leather on the palate, finish wasn't great but not surprised given the two day layover. still mixed on this one (7226 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 8/10/2016 & rated 97 points: Levererar som vanligt! En helt magisk Barolo som har allt man kan önska (7496 views)

WINES OF THE WINERY "AZIENDA AGRICOLA FALLETTO"The grapes are grown in the winery’s own vineyards and vinified in their cellars. These wines are sold with a label bearing the wording: "Azienda Agricola FALLETTO"– di Bruno Giacosa

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
