| Community Tasting Notes (average 85.3 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by cobbpa on 6/2/2012 & rated 87 points: Still good. Nose has raw meat, violets, and a bit of generic dark fruit to it. Palate has a lot of that fruit, but also maintains the underlying floral & meat tones. Bit of a short finish, but pretty good flavors and structure support what's there. Dark, pretty, and fruit-based without being simple. I dig, and this is going to keep kicking for another couple years. (6196 views) | | Tasted by David Paris (dbp) on 1/6/2012 & rated 88 points: Pop and poured. This smells pretty damn weird, but delicious. Incredibly sweet red ground meat on the nose which dominates. It's a little funky, but definitely smells sweet and yummy. Soft palate entry, but it is a little cold. Once it warms up on the tongue, I get some similar meat flavors, coupled with spice, mild acidity, and strawberries poured over a steak. Nice overall, but a little excessively funky. Pretty interesting still, and makes you think about it. (6620 views) | | Tasted by monkey769 on 9/17/2011: Let it sit too long; had gone bad. (7141 views) | | Tasted by The Count on 7/31/2011 & rated 89 points: Nice depth, good tannin/fruit balance (7308 views) | | Tasted by Slatrat on 7/3/2011: Excellent value. Multi-layered spice. Well put together. The South African reds are superb. (3080 views) | | Tasted by The Kokopelli on 5/4/2011 & rated 88 points: A transparent garnet hued wine with a medium body. Earth, grilled meat and black pepper on the nose. Tastes of plum and red raspberry on a nicely integrated frame with lots of acidity. The finish has lots of red raspberry and some toasted oak. (2999 views) | | Tasted by FPK on 3/23/2011 & rated 87 points: Smells of barn yard, but surprisingly is smooth, cherry, half decent and enjoyable (3639 views) | | Tasted by JJWilliams81 on 2/26/2011 & rated 50 points: Poured out. This was my first South African wine and it wont help future South Africans.... (3518 views) | | Tasted by ecola on 2/3/2011 & rated 89 points: Spicey red berries on the nose and palate. Very smooth to drink with moderate tannins. ($12) (3189 views) | | Tasted by The Kokopelli on 1/18/2011 & rated 89 points: The very first sniff makes you think animal and one that is both agile and sneaky. The Wolftrap is a garnet wine with a medium body. The nose is very aromatic with notes of game, bacon, smoke and vanilla. Pleasingly soft in the mouth, with juicy acidity, and tastes of red raspberry, plum and smoked meat. The medium finish features red raspberry and heavily toasted oak, leading to a dark chocolate note. Amazingly consistent with my previous note. For lover's of Mourvedre blends, this is a steal at the less than $10 price point. (3304 views) | | Tasted by marcellevi on 12/28/2010 & rated 87 points: Nice wine, good value. Musty, earthy nose - some spice and rubber. Good blackberry, other dark fruits on the palate. Used a Vinturi on this bottle, and it helped bring it together vs. prior bottles. (3444 views) | | Tasted by tward on 12/7/2010 & rated 84 points: Good value. Has some real 'rhone' characteristics upon opening with some animal and earty notes and ripe fruit. It drinks well for a while before becoming fruity / grapey and losing the nose. A glass kept in the bottle suctioned for a couple of days did not drink well at all - unbalanced, rough, and green. This is one to pop and pour and consume quickly (odd that some comments recommend this on the second night). (3419 views) | | Tasted by khmark7 on 11/6/2010 & rated 86 points: A little bitter and on the thin side compared to the 2007 vintage. Still a very nice wine. (3670 views) | | Tasted by chapinde on 10/23/2010 & rated 88 points: Wonderful Rhone blend, with bacon, smoke, and rendered pork fat among red and purple fruits, absurd qpr. (3773 views) | | Tasted by The Kokopelli on 10/4/2010 & rated 90 points: Discovering Wine: Boekenhoutskloof is a mouthful and so is the wine. Garnet in appearance and medium bodied, it has a nose of game, smoke and bacon, befitting the Wolftrap name. In the mouth, it is smooth, with soft and round tastes of blackberry and plum. The medium finish has a peppery edge with sweet blackberry. There's enough complexity in this wine to keep one's interest, especially given the excellent QPR. (4499 views) | | Tasted by Enslore on 10/1/2010 & rated 91 points: Sooo spicy, and yet still quite gluggable. Delicious. (405 views) | | Tasted by AMeatWithVino on 9/25/2010 & rated 86 points: Nice big smoky, earthy nose. Muted berry flavors but a solid QPR that I would look for again. (4286 views) | | Tasted by jensebak on 9/10/2010 & rated 87 points: Dark, chewy, dark fruits, well-balanced, semi-concentrated, pleasant every-day wine (4322 views) | | Tasted by Weston3220 on 9/9/2010 & rated 87 points: Study Night for WSET Lvl 3 Test (My Basement Suite): Clear, Deep Ruby, Legs A: Clean, Med plus intensity, developing Mineral, Umami, Licorice, Earthy, Smoke - South Africa Terrior

Conc: Good plus, balanced little on on the finish, Day 2, Opened/Integrated Nicely 89pts (4869 views) | | Tasted by Jason Rzutkiewicz on 7/12/2010 & rated 85 points: (14.5%) 68% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, 2% Viognier - Smoky and spicy upfront on the nose this one is lively on the palate showing sour cherry and berry flavors with a tannic acidity taking over before an earthy, black pepper finish leaves your mouth lingering with dry, herbal, chocolate notes. These notes sound as if I liked the wine more than I did. I actually found it slightly disjointed which runs counter to the Wine Enthusiast review which called this one “well integrated”. (4758 views) | | Tasted by dblbogey on 6/21/2010 & rated 84 points: Pretty simple and one dimensional. Not bad for the price but would not buy again. (4588 views) | | Tasted by horn-dog on 6/21/2010 & rated 88 points: Round, smooth, delicious, and a great QPR. This baby is a great all-round wine, and a good choice for seducing a white wine drinker to the dark side. (4645 views) | | Tasted by Tuffdawg on 6/21/2010 & rated 84 points: The nose on this was super smokey with dull red fruit. On the palate I found this to be pretty simple with and odd rubber ball componant. Short finish. (4639 views) | | Tasted by marcellevi on 6/17/2010 & rated 86 points: Popped 'n' poured. Big smokey nose w/ plenty of earthy mustiness. Picking up blackberries and currants. The musty nose had blown off by the second night. Very interesting and good Rhone blend. A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce. South Africa Wines of South Africa |
