Community Tasting Notes (average 92.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 89 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by tanglenet on 12/2/2021: Opened and double decanted for an hour. Served with pizza. Became quite nice after 2 hours. Strong black fruit attack; tight tannins which need food; lightweight in body; ends with a dry and sharp finish. Good. Definitely needs food to drink with. (1169 views)
Tasted by Counselor Chris on 10/17/2020 & rated 85 points: Heavy stewed fruit, beef and beef blood. Disappointing lack of energy, structure or complexity. Just kind of a blunt instrument. (1629 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 7/17/2020 & rated 92 points: PnP (1606 views)
Tasted by AB16 on 6/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Slightly hotvwith tons of tannin. Good now, better over next ten years (1630 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 10/19/2019 & rated 93 points: A quiet stunner. Even after all these years, it's a seamless balance of deep, dark fruit and bold structure. Paired with steak, arugula and great friends. (1875 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 4/26/2019 & rated 92 points: On PnP, the acidity stood out and dominated this wine. With air, it balanced out and was bright and tasty. (1678 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 7/5/2018 & rated 92 points: Fading. Opened a magnum with tri tip and this wine was much better a couple years ago. Keep the air out of it. Riedel stemware (1924 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 4/27/2018 & rated 92 points: Love the nose and taste of 7% Viognier in the mix. A pnp, drank in 45 min., wine was delicious & changing. Drink one soon. (1841 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 10/28/2017 & rated 93 points: Beautiful floral nose with slightly tart blue and black fruits. This has higher than expected acidity and is very much in balance. I was prepared for a bigger fruit bomb wine, but was pleasantly surprised with how nice this was. (2371 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 9/11/2017 flawed bottle: Corked, but you could taste beautiful fruit lying underneath. Too bad. (2113 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 8/22/2017 & rated 93 points: Pnp, drank over 45 min. Beautiful fruit & floral nose, delicious blue/black fruit, and a smooth balance. Everyone enjoyed it. (2145 views)
Tasted by Azbearoh on 6/23/2017 & rated 95 points: A great Denner Syrah. Nice plum and blackberry flavors with a nice floral aroma and taste from the Viognier. Still young and could use more time. Nice finish with some black pepper. Glad to have more bottles to see where this one goes. (2050 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 1/26/2017 & rated 93 points: Very nice syrah with good fruit and velvety mouth feel. (2259 views)
Tasted by bjamesclark on 12/20/2016 & rated 92 points: 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier
Aged 16 months in 228L Barriques, 60% Neutral, 30% Once Used French and Hungarian, 10% New French. Fermented 30% Whole Cluster

Decanted for over 2 hours, which at this point it still needs.
Medium-plus intensity in aromas of ripe blackberry, plum and violet pastilles that integrate well with scents of black olive, rosemary and camphor, black licorice, smoked red meats and a vein of wet sidewalk and rocky mineral with a trace of white pepper.
On the palate, a lush Syrah, with bold flavors of concentrated blackberry, plum and fig with a smoky edge that shows notes of bacon and grilled red meats that evolve to show black olive, white pepper, Star anise, earth, crushed violets, bramble, mineral and crushed rock.
Texturally this wine is silky smooth and moderate-plus in mid palate density. The finish lingers pleasantly, and softly in intensity. Acid is medium-plus keeping this fresh and alive.
Overall, drinks well now, but will continue to cellar well for sometime. Decant recommended. (1947 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 11/12/2016 & rated 94 points: This is what a wine should with bbq ribs. Reidel stemware. Popped and poured and kept the cork in till gone (2021 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 10/30/2016 & rated 89 points: Wines with Friends (and Game 4) (Chris and Renee's): Not the best showing for this which I have loved on prior occasions. I find a lot of 2010's to be in an odd place right now. The fruit seems quite shut down but everything else is showing. This seemed clumsy and a bit cloying. No heat, but I would hold these or give them a ton of air. As I said, I think this is consistent with other Central Coast Syrahs I have had recently. (2667 views)
Tasted by johnny1206 on 10/13/2016 & rated 91 points: Nice with dark fruit flavors. The mouthfeel was a little tannic and high acid, but not so much to take away the flavors. Good finish (2031 views)
Tasted by RLP805 on 10/3/2016 & rated 91 points: Pop and poured, started out with fruit up front and well balanced, over about an hour the wine evolved with the fruit subsiding and more of the backend coming forward with greater tannins and a bit more acid. Still very good but different. If drinking alone I would drink immediately, but better with food after it sits awhile. (1694 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 9/9/2016 & rated 94 points: Very nice!! Huge fruit without being over the top. Nice texture, very approachable right out of the bottle. (1744 views)
Tasted by pilot360 on 5/29/2016: Nicely restrained nose of blackberry, deep cassias, all fruit with a little bit of smokiness. Started to drift away after 3 hours in decanter. Good (2253 views)
Tasted by The Wine Write on 2/26/2016 & rated 92 points: Still vibrant. Enough acid to keep things interesting. Savory fruit, long finish. Very nice. (2019 views)
Tasted by golfwine on 2/19/2016 & rated 90 points: Probably a generous score but it had few faults. Also, the meal, company, restaurant & occasion made the experience great.
Great color with in-your-face fruit and that compelling, floral aromatic component (from the Viognier), which took a little time to come through but held throughout. Far too fruit forward for my current liking but has held together well and was thoroughly enjoyed by the group. I had the benefit of a Fall menu at a great Napa restaurant, to be able to choose my courses with the wine in mind and so, it complimented my meal nearly perfectly. (1929 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 1/5/2016 & rated 94 points: Do not air. I did for forty minutes and by the time we finished the bottle, it was fading. Drank in Reidel Syrah glasses. I will drink my other bottles within a year or so (2244 views)
Tasted by Aunt Esther on 11/9/2015 & rated 95 points: My last one - F**K! Such expressive aromatics on these Denner tens. Serious depth and weight and just pure, delicious (but not outrageous) Paso fruit. My only criticism of this wine is the label which looks like Van Gogh drawing a dormant vine w/roots about six years before he moved to Southern France and discovered the sun. Come on, y'all. (2624 views)
Tasted by tp096255 on 8/30/2015 & rated 93 points: This blend is always good to great, and this vintage was great. 93+. It has all of the things I love about it in spades: honeysuckle, blackberry liqueur and char in the nose, opulent black berry fruit in the mouth, finishing with a hint of pepper and mocha. It totally goes toe to toe with the truffle burger at Eden Burger. Every vintage, every time. Great juice. Decanted for about 2 hours, and it needs it still. (2554 views)

Syrah Blend

The 2018 is 40% Merlot and 60% Syrah.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
