Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 82 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by spendergast on 5/10/2023 & rated 92 points: A nice chard with crisp white fruit, citrus notes, minerals with good acidity and nice finish. (1058 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 1/23/2023 & rated 93 points: This is more like it! When I had this previously (12/31/20, 89 points), I noted that the structure was far in front of the fruit, but the one glass I still had left on the third night showed great promise. Now, with a bit more than an hour of air, the promise is fulfilled: a really impressively built—still—chard with racy acidity and surprisingly potent tannins joined by far more vibrant fruit with delightful sweet-savory notes. Held strong over 3 nights, so while I’m not sure that there’s much more upside, this should have several years of high quality drinking at this level. Notably balanced and elegant, this works equally well as a food wine—with both stuffed pasillas and chicken soup—and on its own. Would buy again and will keep an eye out for the BC SVD chards. Well done and recommended. 92-93+ (2041 views)
Tasted by larrybbaldwin on 8/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Creamed corn nose on initial impression that develops into a creamy, luscious chardonnay. Great acid with a little tannic drying. Muted pineapple , persistent aftertaste. Lovely (2166 views)
Tasted by lbrooks on 6/17/2022 & rated 88 points: A nice nose with a little bit of apple and pear. It really has a nice feel to it. A little sweet on the taste with a nice thick feel that finshes smooth and sweet. (2497 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 5/16/2022 & rated 91 points: WIML91

Tasted non blind.

Yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of talc, lemon, yellow pear and yellow apple. Flavors of lemon, cherry and green apple. Medium acidity, full bodied. Drink over the short term, maybe into the next 3+ years. (2679 views)
Tasted by CDT on 3/23/2022 & rated 89 points: Medium gold in colour with noticeable petulance on the glass.
Aromas start out somewhat reductive, then lemon, floral & crushed gravel.
On the palate, medium bodied citrus, lemon/lime, yellow apple, floral, biscuit, restrained buttery oak, medium acidity & a long finish to spice, salinity & crushed gravel. (2349 views)
Tasted by SophiDog on 12/22/2021: Very nice Chardonnay on the lighter side (2443 views)
Tasted by justintime97 on 9/18/2021 & rated 90 points: California, but with restraint. Drinkable and enjoyable. Oak but not overwhelming. (2483 views)
Tasted by redz on 6/30/2021 & rated 91 points: on the yellow side, smooth, fun. (3055 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 6/12/2021 & rated 92 points: Mid to full weight, nice mouthfeel, not compelling. Ripe quite rich and satisfying. Moderate finish and straight forward. Drink now and next 7 years. (2852 views)
Tasted by Aparritz on 6/3/2021 & rated 92 points: Agree with the other TNs on this: well rounded and versatile, leaning a little round and buttery not not at all flabby, or without balance from solid acid and verve. A beauty! (2610 views)
Tasted by sdwineguru on 5/23/2021 & rated 90 points: $25 Santa Barbara County, California, Chardonnay 2017 Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills. Dark gold, viscous; buttery, vanilla, tropical, wine lees, peach nose; light acids; bigger buttery style; fat, round, oaky finish. w/grilled chicken. 16 UC Davis scale, 90 other scales. (2579 views)
Tasted by Rond on 5/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Nice balance of crispness and richness. (2258 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 5/17/2021 & rated 91 points: (at Cindy Lou’s - Baltimore) this is terrific wine at a very fair price. Gold, big yet with good balance. Impressive. (91) (2230 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 5/15/2021 & rated 92 points: Bright lemon yellow color, mango and fresh bread on the nose. Nice first impression: lively acidity and a touch of tart, ripe fruit. Green apple, pear and honey, with a good deal of minerality on the finish. Not a big buttery Chardonnay by any means. This is quite satisfying and a good QPR to boot! (1956 views)
Tasted by vino_per_tutti on 5/5/2021 & rated 91 points: Golden color. Fresh and light on the nose - lemon curd, lemon peel, white peach. Creamy, but still fresh on the palate - lemon custard, lemon gum drop, peach, vanilla. Medium bodied. Sweet lemon merangue/vanilla finish. Delightful, and great QPR at your neighborhood warehouse store. (2060 views)
Tasted by mmclancydvm on 4/30/2021: Game night (1999 views)
Tasted by Rudolph Schmidt on 4/24/2021: Floral, lemon peel, walnut, unripe peach and toasty notes. (2132 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 4/16/2021 & rated 92 points: Honeysuckle, lemon meringue, green apple, creme brulee. Rather tasty. (2131 views)
Tasted by Pontifax on 3/24/2021 & rated 91 points: Lots of controversy over this Cali Chard.....
As for myself...I like this because it isn't a heavy Caramel/ butter bomb .
On nose:minerals and notes of peach.
On palate: the above flavour notes, well as vanilla / oak , in good balance , a surprising prominence of meyer lemon , as well as notes of golden apple ....as a lover of south African Chenin blanc and White Bordeaux , Chardonnay takes a back seat , but every once in a while ( keeping an open mind) I find something interesting ...this is well made....and deserves some age...4-5 years.
Went well with Salmon tonight . (2505 views)
Tasted by gaveaux on 3/18/2021 & rated 90 points: I liked this more the second time round. Pear, lemon, floral, rich mod body, oak and mid acid on the finish.
Had this with salmon steaks. Super! (2340 views)
Tasted by rama on 2/22/2021: As PnP: near tropical fruit lushness on the nose. Rich lemon curd, medium acid, full bodied. The finish is reminiscent of a Viognier. Given a few hours of air and warming up, it really came around. Still very lemony and rich, but its lost its flabbiness and became rounder.

Open for business, but give it some air and time to warm up. (2656 views)
Tasted by rahul_d_chatter@yahoo.com on 2/15/2021 & rated 85 points: Not as subtle as the 2016. This vintage has a more oak in comparison and is more noticeable than the previous year’s. The fruit is well integrated and not exuberant, which is a hall mark of the Brewer-Clifton style. But, the noticeable oak takes away from the classy drink that this can be. I regret ordering this at the restaurant instead of something from Macon. Not bad, but forgettable. WS 92 pts and WA 91 pts is generous. (2600 views)
Tasted by Château de Farmer on 2/11/2021 & rated 86 points: Really unremarkable, I don't get the hype. Style is restrained (oak and ripeness are not that high for a New World Chard), but it still felt a little hot and didn't have any tartness or zing in the acidity. Nothing wrong but forgettable entirely. (2625 views)
Tasted by gaveaux on 1/21/2021 & rated 89 points: Dry, floral, light mid to palate and you can feel the heat of the alcohol on the finish -14.5% (2609 views)

Brewer-Clifton

Producer website

Addt'l Info (Jackson Family Wine Group)

Born of an obsession with Santa Barbara County terroir, we formed Brewer-Clifton in the early 1990’s. We both had significant sales and production experience with a multitude of Santa Barbara County wineries, and always felt compelled to push the limits of the fruit from the area further than our previous employers had set forth to do. We set out to put the essence of the best vineyards in the area into a bottle.

We focus our efforts solely on the production of vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several carefully selected, extreme vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. The area's long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils combine to produce dynamic and explosive wines with great purity and precision. Each vineyard site is nurtured identically, allowing the pedigree of place to play the most significant role in our portfolio of wines.

In addition to our collective efforts, Steve Clifton also produces wine under his own label, called Palmina, which focuses exclusively on Italian varietals, and is the winemaker at Tritono, an Argentine producer of Malbec. Greg Brewer produces wine under the diatom label, as well as being the winemaker at Melville, a Santa Rita Hills winery dedicated to estate grown Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah.

Brewer-Clifton wines are only available in small quantities. Total production averages between 4,000 and 6,500 cases annually.

Brewer-Clifton is owned and operated by Steve Clifton, a musician, and Greg Brewer, a former professor of French. The pair started Brewer-Clifton in 1995 and they source grapes from the Santa Rita Hills appellation. Brewer-Clifton makes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine. The wines earn ratings in the 90s from reviewers, and Wine Advocate has noted that “Brewer and Clifton consistently deliver delicious wines that are also deeply thought provoking with regards to the potential these vineyard sites hold.”

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
