| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Julian Marshall on 6/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Very much a red fruit wine. Red berries on the nose, along with a little paprika and cinnamon plus some faded flowers. The attack is fresh and relatively light, red cherry and redcurrant, with strawberries not far behind. The fruit has an immediacy and purity common to all FDP wines, but there isn't the same depth as a Roches-Neuves, for example. I get the feeling that this would have been better a few years ago - the CT window is until 2020 and I agree with that - the fruit is on the wane and there isn't the body or grip necessary for a longer future. I hadn't tried a Breton FDP before - very enjoyable but not at the same level as other FDPs. (405 views) | | Tasted by Rieslingfan on 7/18/2021: Last bottle of three I bought on release. The first was delicious, the second a bretty train wreck. This one is excellent, showing some softness, so I am glad to be drinking it now. Earth, herb, red cherry and a little bit of cinnamon stick on the nose, is followed by fresh acidity, tart fruit and more cinnamon on the palate. At the back there is a hint of fresh cloth band-aid (not a plastic strip), but it's a clean note that adds complexity rather than detracting.
I don't find the same depth to this wine as with the Baudry FdP, but it's a very fine wine on its own terms. (1357 views) | | Tasted by Rieslingfan on 11/20/2016: Brett Favre, Brett Hull, Brett Bodine, Brett Cecil, Brett Butler...
My last bottle of this was fantastic. This one smells like a horse covered with band aids. Oh well (2969 views) | | Tasted by Neecies on 4/11/2016: Last of three bottles tasted since 2014. Much softer than the last and no longer herbaceous, rather the dark red fruit is dominated by new dusty notes from entry to finish. Not unpleasantly so if you like dusty wine (I do, but where did that come from?), but we needed to move the wine to a smaller, narrower glass to punch up the CF character. (2914 views) | | Tasted by Mtpisgah on 4/3/2016: I am not sure what to think. In a way I like it, old world mustiness. In a way it is too musty and wet cardboardish. I don't think it is corked though, I think it is just the way the wine is. My couldn't stand it so more for me. Not much changed on the second day. (2923 views) | | Tasted by Rieslingfan on 6/15/2015 & rated 95 points: Silken, fragrant, pure and delicious. My only minor, nitpick is that I wish it had just a touch more depth. If Baudy Grezeaux had this texture it would be Cabernet Franc perfection.
That's just me being ornery. This really is fabulous and drinking so well if so young. (4292 views) | | Tasted by theronware on 4/22/2015 & rated 90 points: This wine has softened considerably in the last year. Lots of inviting fruit, together with tobacco leaf and just a touch of graphite on the nose and palate. It softens further with air and seems to have lost some of the iron and green herbs of its youth. I preferred the relative firmness of the previous bottles and was quite surprised by how fruity this was. I think I'll leave my remaining half case for a while and see where it morphs to next. (3436 views) | | Tasted by kenhoeve on 12/15/2014 & rated 92 points: This one has definitely turned the corner to goodness. Lots of tannin resolution, even if it still has plenty, but they don't hide the fruit. Really nice light bodied red fruits and berries. All that green stuff has gone to a nice spice profile. There's a touch of herbaceousness from that still, but mostly just a beautifully natural layer of spice. Gorgeous wine that taught me a lesson about aging Loires. (3028 views) | | Tasted by salil on 10/31/2014 & rated 90 points: Starts out quite funky, almost a little musty at first, but that quickly blows off with a few minutes of air and with time it settles into its usual self with lots of pure red and dark berried fruit tinged by gentle green herbal and more savoury earthy notes. The palate presence again shows that remarkable lightness and finesse, and this is a really easy wine to drink now, even though the structure and balance suggest there's plenty of time ahead. (3256 views) | | Tasted by Neecies on 4/21/2014 & rated 92 points: Spectacularly good young cab franc--thanks to Salil who warned me away from opening one any sooner. Cassis, green herb and clove on the nose, and more cassis, black raspberry, herb and dust on the palate. Density, tannins, acidity and a harmonious finish speak well for the future. (2643 views) | | Tasted by Billigan on 4/21/2014 & rated 93 points: Rumors of this wine's demise (or at least downward turn) prompted me to pull one of these and find out for myself. Luckily, this wine is still going very strong. The nose has grown even more expressive, with the telltale aromas of crushed berries, tobacco smoke, tilled earth, and a whiff of green pepper having only grown more intense and well-delineated with time. Tannins are mostly resolved, making it very gulpable, but with no shortage of sappy red fruits and balancing acidity, so there's plenty of life of left here. Another remarkably pure and delicious expression of cab franc. (3190 views) | | Tasted by Finare Vinare on 4/19/2014 & rated 90 points: Mineral, gravelly cab franc nose, with Finnish salmiak and red bio-apples. Lively co2 on the transparent palate, but the fruit is clearly fading as well as the acidic freshness. Better drink up now, and not gamble on keeping this "sans soufre" cuvée any longer. (3610 views) | | Tasted by MRichman on 2/22/2014: Lots of mineral, iron, smoky dark fruit. A real mouth coating fine tannic structure, lots of acid, and a black tar middle. Lean, sharp, focused. This wine has a ton of energy wound very very tight. I'm curious to see what it matures into, at the moment it is very young and very interesting. (2249 views) | | Tasted by Billigan on 8/24/2013 & rated 91 points: Conveyed the same tremendous sense of purity and freshness as my previous bottle, although the tannin was a bit more present than the silky expression from last time around. But that's only a small knock on what's still a beautiful, archetypal cab franc. (2783 views) | | Tasted by fitzi on 6/16/2013: Tart with great intensity and very fine tannins, almost Beaujolais-like in its freshness, but a leaner, wirier fruit profile. Enjoyed this very much and would rebuy. No 'green,' but a suspicion of stem, which enhanced the wine's character and interest, without detracting from the overall flavor gestalt. (2584 views) | | Tasted by Swaggering Beaunie on 4/20/2013 flawed bottle: I bought 2 bottles. The first one was corked and undrinkable. The second one was also corked and undrinkable. I also bought 2 bottles of the Breton Bourgueil Trinch! 2010. Both of those bottles were also corked! (2653 views) | | Tasted by Beerzebub on 4/20/2013: Popped and poured. Smells like juicy berry medley and hibiscus, green plant stem, dried herbs, tobacco, black pepper, and cool clean wet earth, nice freshness and purity. Great acidity on the palate, fresh juicy tart hibiscus, red fruit, blackberry, sappy vine, mild black pepper and tobacco notes. Medium length finish - fruity, sappy, herbal, with a hint of earth. Tannins are light, very easygoing in that regard. Good focus and purity. Engaging as well as very drinkable. Quite an enjoyable young wine. (2713 views) | | Tasted by kenhoeve on 1/29/2013 & rated 88 points: First bottle clearly corked. The cab franc green streak is strong in this one, but a nice depth on the palate that pulls the fruit along. Opened a touch with an hour or two but became stingy again. It's tight, needs a little time to flesh out. While I didn't enjoy this right now, I can easily see loving it in 2 years. (2882 views) | | Tasted by GARDEN on 12/25/2012 & rated 90 points: I did a pop and pour on night one. In my opinion, this wine is too young. I will wait at least a year before opening the next bottle. In the mean time, if you must drink this, I recommend decanting. We finished off the bottle on night two and it was starting to come around. Even then, it worked because we paired it with a very spicy main dish. I have given a rating which is reflective of the second night. It may well merit a higher score as it settles down. (2256 views) | | Tasted by Billigan on 12/23/2012 & rated 92 points: The wine conveyed a tremendous sense of purity. The flavors and aromas were classic, with the wet clay, green pepper, tobacco, and red berries woven together beautifully, but it was the silkiness and delicacy in the mouthfeel that really set this wine apart for me. Great balance, low alcohol, and lovely freshness on the finish had everyone reaching for another sip. Wonderful. (2227 views) | | Tasted by coremill on 10/31/2012 & rated 91 points: Just as good as the previous bottle except for being maybe a touch greener. A very pretty mix of black fruit, earth, and herbs, but the real joy here is the texture, this is so smooth and rich and juicy all at the same time. Wonderful. (2547 views) | | Tasted by Finare Vinare on 10/18/2012 & rated 92 points: Out of all Breton 2010s, the ungrafted and unsulphured 2010 Bourgeuil Franc de Pied is the most open, red-fruity (ripe strawberries!), smoothest, silkiest and also most fascinating at the moment, with more than a hint of red cidre apples and biodynamic compost besides the obvious minerality. Needs a double decant for lively co2 - and then it drinks like a charm. Nice length too. Wow, this is the shit! By all definitions a true "vin nature", with 12,5% alcohol. (3076 views) | | Tasted by coremill on 6/4/2012 & rated 92 points: Wow, this was great. Rich dark cab franc currant fruit, just a touch of that green tobacco leaf thing, some cracked pepper, and a nice loamy quality. But what impressed me so much is how the richness of the fruit is so seamless and light and elegant, with the burred tannin having an incredibly fine, smooth character and the acid adding a perfectly integrated tartness. (2977 views) | | Tasted by salil on 5/24/2012 & rated 91 points: Grand Sichuan jeeb with Oswaldo (St. Marks Place Grand Sich, NY): Another lovely showing. I'm drinking through these far too quickly, but they're hard to resist now - incredibly pure, fresh dark fruited flavours tinged with pepper, savoury earth and green herbal notes. Remarkably finessed and seamless in the mouth, and a great accompaniment to the shredded beef with green pepper. (3236 views) | | Tasted by TheSauerKraut on 5/9/2012: This stuff is ridiculously good wine for the money.
