Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Outplaying on 6/12/2015: I hardly drink any whites from the US anymore but this is pretty good and interesting. A slight whiff of diesel on the nose that fades with air. Some floral notes too. On the palate the wine is soft textured but then finishes with crisp acidity. Some pear, melon and blanched almond. (1106 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 3/7/2015: Tercero Dinner #2 in the OC with Larry Schaffer (A Restaurant In Newport Beach, CA): Similar to the 2009 with the diesel/petrol note, although lighter in aromatic volume than the 2009. I find more citrus and acidity here compared to the 2009, with the melon notes leaner and more focused, too. Acidity is very present. Shows the signature of the vintage. (2100 views)
Tasted by boylan on 7/22/2014 & rated 91 points: White cheese, hot dog, flowers, hint of green apple, dynamite mouth feel and some great acid. (1271 views)
Tasted by 9skinner@verizon.net on 3/15/2014: Very dry and good with seafood. (1382 views)
Tasted by Colima74 on 12/18/2013 & rated 92 points: Wow! Intense nose and flavors. Grapefruit and wet stones, white flowers. All kinds of sensations. Terrific acidity too. 1/2 bottle for tomorrow. Delicious stuff! (1474 views)
Tasted by tooch on 8/15/2013 & rated 90 points: Day 1 - Central Coast Tastings (Central Coast - CA): I was very fond of this. Beautiful crushed stones on the nose with some pear and melon notes. The palate was super fresh and savory at the same time. Probably the best Grenache Blanc I've had from the US. (1933 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 6/30/2013 & rated 89 points: Drinking very well on a hot summer day and evening. (870 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 5/26/2013 & rated 89 points: Came off a bit heavier than Larry's other whites, but still with good balancing acidity. Agree with the other note that mentioned nectarine as a descriptor. Very good, but not nearly as enjoyable as the 2011 Outlier Gewurtz that immediately followed this. (807 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 5/5/2013 & rated 89 points: Tercero Dinner - Now we're all uncomfortable (FMIII in the OC): Clear color. Slight sour flavor and light diesel as expected in a tercero GB but less petrol than previous vintages I tasted. Fruit is nectarine and tree fruit. Got a bit of a savory finish. (1247 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 5/4/2013: Tercero Dinner in the OC with Larry Schaffer (My House In The South OC): Discussion at the table surrounding the petrol note on the nose. Adds a distinctive quality. Green melon, what I thought was a hint of strawberry and a soft palate. (1516 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 5/2/2012: Jersey Girls Road Trip - A Story by the Chauffeur; 4/27/2012-5/2/2012 (Solvang, CA): Barrel sample. Looks like '11 is shaping up for a great year. Dominated by grapefruit aromas and a zippy grapefruit taste. Sharp, clean finish. (2190 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Central Coast AVA Wikipedia

Santa Ynez Valley

The Santa Ynez Valley AVA is the largest wine sub-region of Santa Barbara County and has the highest concentration of vineyards. The valley runs from east to west, between the Purisima Hills and the San Rafael Mountains in the north, and the Santa Ynez Mountains in the south. Although the valley is open to the Pacific Ocean in the west, the fact that it is relatively narrow means that limited cool air and fog is funnelled in. Low average rainfall and a very long growing season make the region ideal for quality wine production.

The diverse climates of Santa Ynez Valley mean that a wide array of wines is produced. The cool, western part of the AVA is predominantly planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, accompanied by other aromatic white varieties. Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) is able to flourish here, allowing some outstanding dessert wines to be produced in suitable vintages. Further east, the cooling effect of the ocean is lessened as both vineyard elevation and average temperatures increase. This warmer part of Santa Ynez Valley is more suited to fuller-bodied grape varieties, such as Syrah and Merlot.
more ...s expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive, while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhone blends.
