Tasted by Rbrooks1281 on 12/25/2022 & rated 80 points: Probably a bit past it’s prime. Was good after an hour of decanting and then quickly trailed off. After a few hours it was brutal. (1004 views)
Tasted by IronChefCardio on 8/13/2022 & rated 94 points: Excellent! Deep color, peppery finish. It needed a long decant to open up the berries and other soft flavors, but it was well worth the wait! (1222 views)
Tasted by Smcolivas on 4/2/2022: WOW...just sipping after in decanter for over an hour. Deep. Spicy and long finish. Berry flavors and slight peppery. (1375 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 1/1/2022 & rated 93 points: PnP From a magnum. No notes taken No real experience with Cakebread before; but loved this. Classic cassis nose with some licorice and leather notes. Tannins were soft and light acidity Fully extracted dark fruits. Great finish (1684 views)
Tasted by thunderfly on 7/10/2021 & rated 89 points: Still really good. Needed to be decanted, and within an hour was good. Still some tannins and plenty of dark fruit notes. (2136 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 2/16/2021 & rated 91 points: My last.
Elegant, ripe and focussed as per earlier notes. Will seek out again.
Fully ready and for drinking up over the next year or so. (1965 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 1/19/2021 & rated 91 points: Very much as per my May '20 comments - really elegant with all the then noted elements firing in unison.
For drinking over the next year or two while grip maintained. (1693 views)
Tasted by theoskay on 11/14/2020: Fantastic. Drink now. (1701 views)
Tasted by jmdickeyiv on 11/13/2020 & rated 92 points: Aged well. Drank in 2019. (1420 views)
Tasted by kyletrenholmdavis on 6/15/2020: Heavy, jammy, decadent, full body yet smooth. Served with chipotle grilled shrimp. (1658 views)
Tasted by Skyla venture on 6/6/2020 & rated 92 points: Classic Cakebread cab. I would drink it now. Don’t wait. It’s at it’s prime. (1323 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 5/24/2020 & rated 91 points: Some four years since last broached and now at its peak.
Threw quite a fine sediment! Rounded dark stoned fruit with soft tannins and cedary nuances. Some dry spice. The earlier noted (2016) alcohol heat no longer present. Elegant and quite European in many ways.
For drinking over the next couple of years. (1277 views)
Tasted by pgrzesik on 5/24/2020 & rated 90 points: This 2010 Cakebread cabernet is in its prime drinking window right now.

The nose is filled with dark fruit, blackberries, and a hint of oak. The palate is medium bodied, rich, smooth and the tannins are nicely integrated. There is a decent finish.

Overall - good wine, but nothing too special. I did not know that Cakebread is made in Rutherford - but did not get the signature Rutherford dust you typically get with this AVA. This is probably a mix of Napa fruit and not from Rutherford exclusively. (1051 views)
Tasted by HonorAmerica on 4/24/2020 & rated 90 points: Nice (1242 views)
Tasted by cbajustin on 3/12/2020 & rated 92 points: Drinking at its prime right now...everything has integrated well...a few more years left on this one! (1062 views)
Tasted by Motoheada1 on 1/3/2020 & rated 85 points: Good fruit, and still well balanced, but I just couldn't get over a slightly bitter, chalky after taste, but not a total loss. Most of the group had a higher opinion than I. (1360 views)
Tasted by SCosgrove on 7/22/2019 & rated 89 points: Not my favorite Cakebread Cab (1751 views)
Tasted by SCosgrove on 2/23/2019 & rated 89 points: On it's last legs I think, a little washed out. Good start, no finish. (2029 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 1/4/2018 & rated 90 points: Fits the typical premium Napa cab profile. Big, rich, jammy dark fruit, with oaky vanilla spice. Not over extracted. Tannins have mellowed with age. (3951 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 12/16/2017 & rated 91 points: very good. Dark with loads of blackberry fruit. Really liked this (3506 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 11/9/2017 & rated 93 points: Big red and black fruit. (3766 views)
Tasted by DorSa on 8/31/2017 & rated 97 points: Medium tannins (3682 views)
Tasted by kmicho on 1/21/2017 & rated 94 points: Unbelievable Cab. Dark cherries, muddled berries, vanilla, oak, minerals. This wine is full of complexity and incredibly well balanced. No need for decanting at this point. The tannins have mellowed beautifully. Best wine I've had in a year or more. (4158 views)
Tasted by PaulStout on 11/18/2016: Satin texture, more alcoholic. Blackberry, black cherry, berry, tannic, minerals. Fuller body. Decanted 2 hours. Garlic butter bagel, 4 cheese Mac and cheese pairing -- 4/5. (3550 views)
Tasted by Old Amarone on 11/7/2016 & rated 92 points: The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry and blueberry. It tastes like raisin and blackberry. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity. As you can tell I like it a lot! Bought this in Worcester, MA and paid $75 for it! Should have gone on Wine Searcher Pro for the best price, however I was ready to buy when I saw it! I usually a Veneto region drinker with the Dried Grape Characteristics! (3234 views)

Cakebread Cellars

Producer website
Over 30 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while there, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born. As the Cakebread family reflects upon the many profound changes in the wine industry over the last 33 years, such as innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers, they note that their key values have remained the same. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their first small vineyard has grown into a thriving internationally distributed wine company.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
