Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 54 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ogres3 on 9/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Excellent wine, in a great window, ranks up there with the best Napa cabs. (514 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 8/24/2023 & rated 95 points: Pop and pour, needed a few minutes to open. At age 11 this is still a firehose of dense fruit and punchy alcohol. A true cult Cab priced well below most, drink it if you can find it. (716 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 6/13/2023 & rated 95 points: 1 hour slow ox, enjoyed over 2 nights. Lush & smooth sweet blackberry with dark chocolate at the end. Just exquisite. (605 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 3/18/2023: Drunk over 2 nights but never decanted
Lovely nose, Smooth and rich but never really came together for me. (647 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 2/20/2023 & rated 95 points: Extended decant, Deep, dark color, nose of dark fruit with some floral notes and secondary notes. Pure, linear, smooth mouthfeel, tannins smooth but present. Long finish. Very pleasing. (717 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 9/29/2022 & rated 95 points: Full bodied, rich, ripe sweet blackberries, cassis spice, cocoa and earth. The fruit is so incredibly lush, round and open. I had this 5-6n years back and liked it just as much. Great value for a Napa Cabernet. (776 views)
Tasted by fisk15 on 6/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Drank in Asheville, NC. Drinking very well, elegant (906 views)
Tasted by Phil M1 on 5/28/2022: Pnp and consumed over a couple of hours at a gathering of friends. Delicious out of the gate and improved over the course of drinking. Good balance of fruit and tannins. (850 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 9/5/2021 & rated 95 points: Impromptu dinner at the Canal's OC place. Last bottle of the 2012 in my cellar. Slow oxed about 30 minutes, drank over an hour with the main course - grilled pork chops and veggies.

Notes from 2017: "Medium purple color with "blue tinge"...Nose was showing dark fruit, smoke, perfume, licorice. Palate showing blue/dark fruits, graphite, plums. A nice sweetness w floral notes through the mid palate...lots going on here. Tannins are starting to soften, giving this a very nice texture..."

This tasting the nose showing the dark fruit/licorice profile. Palate of dark and blue fruits with bitter chocolate, mineral and savory notes. A big wine, great persistence through the mid palate and finish. Full body and long finish.

This wine killed on this evening. The 2012s from Napa in my cellar while good, have thinned out a bit and are not showing this kind of structure. Really exceptional (as expected from Pott), may be in its prime over the next 3-5 years but should continue to age if wanting to cellar. (1349 views)
Tasted by fisk15 on 1/5/2021 & rated 92 points: Pretty tannic still after 8 years, some sediment. Dark with clearing at the edge. Certain Pott wines at certain points in their evolution show more herbal than fruited, and this was one of those time. There was definitely dark fruit, it's just that it seems to be battling it out with tannin and herbal notes rather than being harmonious. Being pretty picky, still very good, but hoping for something more profound and balanced with more aging. (1498 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 7/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Powerful dark fruit, Moderately tannic. Could use several hour decant. Still young. (1637 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 3/20/2020 & rated 95 points: Pop and pour. Still very youthful but bursting with flavor. Intense black cherry, wet earth, chewy tannins. So enjoyable. (1931 views)
Tasted by Beezc on 9/21/2019 & rated 93 points: This took a good 1 1/2-2 hrs to come around. I think it will be at its best in 2-3 years. Bell pepper, lead pencil and leather. Long finish. 92+ I feel it will merit a better score in a couple of years. (1871 views)
Tasted by fisk15 on 9/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Drinking really well with 2 hours decanted back into the bottle. Lots of flavor complexity, balance and interest. (1608 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 5/3/2019 & rated 93 points: Smooth and creamy, with chocolate and blackberry flavors. No rough edges with a long finish (1655 views)
Tasted by JLuch1 on 10/23/2018 & rated 93 points: Consistent with prior notes, delicious (2090 views)
Tasted by JLuch1 on 9/17/2018 & rated 93 points: Decanted a couple hours prior to drinking, it improved a bit towards the end of the bottle at hour 4.

Primarily black fruits, cassis, cocoa powder, herbs, earth. Wine was pretty dense in color, with deeper purple hue, but in drinking it was not overripe or heavy on the palate. Medium long finish. I have always enjoyed Aaron's wines and this is no exception.

Would have been more enthusiastic about this one, but the 2009 BV Latour that followed it was all around a better wine at a better place in its drinking window.

93 pts. Drink this now with a decant or cellar for a couple more years. Should easily drink well for another 3-5 years without any problems. (2000 views)
Tasted by jhieb on 5/15/2018 & rated 96 points: Full, rich, and multilayered. This is one of the best Pott wines I've had in a while, and it still has a ton of maturing left to do. Excellent! (2150 views)
Tasted by Jbird73 on 5/5/2018 & rated 92 points: Dominates by purple fruit and took about 2 HRs to open up. Really good but dominated by fruit and was expecting some other notes to hit. (2034 views)
Tasted by Cristal2000 on 4/2/2018 & rated 93 points: Blackberries, dried herbs, violets and some tobacco on the nose. Relatively high levels of acidity, red fruit, medium bodied and old world-ish. Relatively long finish that is a bit clipped by the acid bite. Definitely showing secondary and tertiary notes at this point. I didn't love it, but it's a nice wine, especially with food. (3590 views)
Tasted by J o e on 3/15/2018 & rated 94 points: Cassis, mocha, sage and flowers constitute the aromatics. Medium-bodied in the mouth, with dark fruits, earth, minerals and chocolate. Most importantly, there is absolutely no sense of heaviness or overripeness that is common in Cabs and Cab blends from the region. Long on the finish, with excellent cut and persistence. Quite enjoyable already with some air, this will undoubtedly improve with some additional cellar time. 94. (1678 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 1/19/2018 & rated 93 points: Decanted and served. Another Napa 2012 that's up and ready to go. Lush, velvety blue and black fruit that tastes like a smile. Crowd pleaser. (1773 views)
Tasted by Whinojb on 11/11/2017 & rated 94 points: always so well made - you can taste the effort and expertise of this wine maker. It's like he extracted every aspect of the fruit to work its wonders. (1979 views)
Tasted by Siebs Cellar on 10/15/2017 & rated 93 points: Nice, bright flavor and good body. (1817 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 9/9/2017 & rated 93 points: In OCNJ w Frank and Kelly W, thought I would check in on this one. Big fan of Aaron Pott's wines, knowing this was young but my 2012s have been more ready than I had guessed. After leaving a 2000 Quilceda to open up, we PnP'd this bottle to fill the time...

Medium purple color with "blue tinge"...Nose was showing dark fruit, smoke, perfume, licorice. Palate showing blue/dark fruits, graphite, plums. A nice sweetness w floral notes through the mid palate...lots going on here. Tannins are starting to soften, giving this a very nice texture.

Open and ready but just at the beginning of its drinking window. This should continue to evolve nicely in the bottle for a few more years.
This is a gorgeous wine that should get even better in time...Our group loved it. 93++ (2081 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
