Tasted by cct on 11/10/2023 & rated 95 points: Purchased on release

Decanted for several hours in the AM and drunk that afternoon.

A stony nose with some early petrol and strong prophyrrhic notes of Hermannshohle. Soil more than fruit driven at this point. It's powerful but in harmony. On the palate, this is like someone distilled liquid out of Hermannshoehle rocks. It has breadth and depth, is ripe and intense yet not heavy, with the fruit yellow and fruit salad leaning. Some bitters notes add complexity. Expansive and full bodied but with plenty of acidity to carry it. Intensity with poise. A wine of contemplation. Interestingly the last glass left in the a decanter for 30 plus hours was the best glass, with a seamless mineral water level of clarity. I would say that this is at peak, but after the last glass the next day, I wonder if there is more to come. Terrific. Yum. 95 (399 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 3/29/2022 & rated 93 points: not blind
For a 2005 lean and reluctant. More saline in style than fruit dominated. Mandarine and orange peel. At his peak. 93 (1441 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 2/20/2021 & rated 96 points: Sixth bottle from an eight bottle lot purchased in 2008. Pristine bottle. One of those magical moments when everything comes together, when you take the first sniff and the first sip and you know instantly - this is perfection. It happened today. A perfect bottle. It marries the authority of the Rheingau to the elegance of the Moselle, and it has the unmistakeable character of the Nahe. It is fresh and silky-smooth, there is profound minerally depth, the weight is perfect (12.5% ABV) and the balance between the energy of youth and the wisdom af age has reached its apogee. The aromatic complexity and definition is exemplary - a subtle whirlwind of smoke, fruit and flowers. Gentle bitters guide the long and creamy finish. I don’t think that any dry Riesling is capable of greater finesse. (2697 views)

Tasted by aquacongas on 7/15/2019 & rated 94 points: Not blind
First bottle corked. Second bottle very good but not perfect as 3 month ago. A great Expression of 2005 but all other guessed much younger. Still Primary notes together with nicely balanced aging signs. At his Peak. 94 (2345 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 6/8/2019 & rated 94 points: Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting ***
Glass: Gabriel Gold
Tasted blind. Bottle opened about 2-4h before, double decanted before serving.
Most intense nose of this flight. Way more pressure and tension than the other wines, but with a similar balance. Very long and fruity finish. Potential for 5+ years. 93-94 (2813 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 2/24/2019 & rated 95 points: For a 2005 unbelievable fresh comparable to the icon (vintage 2004). I chose the wine all other people guessed blindly 2013, 2011 and 2011. zitrus dominated, some yellow stone fruits. They guessed Pfalz, Rheingau and Rheinhessen. 95-96. At least 5-7 more years ahead (1687 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 12/22/2018 & rated 92 points: Slight signs of seepage, level 2cm below the cork. A lovely Grosses Gewächs, with excellent Nahe typicity, but not shining as brightly as previous bottles. Is it the bottle, or are its advancing years the cause? Retaste - three bottles left. (1701 views)
Tasted by essconsults on 3/6/2018 & rated 91 points: This is elegant and round with lychee, peach and pear nuances. But it lacks acidity and precision and as a result is less interesting than I expected. A pretty rather than a profound wine. (1111 views)
Tasted by Paui on 12/30/2017 & rated 94 points: has well developed since last time about 2 1/2 years ago. well balanced, rich, slightly oily. pineapple, passion fruit. I had half of the bottle for about one week in the fridge, no signs of oxidation, maybe even better. Will get better, 94p for now. (1439 views)
Tasted by sawira on 12/22/2016: Good, not great. Better as it warms, but this has lost a little something in the last couple years, in my opinion. Maybe a less than perfect, or maybe muted, bottle. (1987 views)
Tasted by sp4388 on 12/19/2016 & rated 93 points: Nose was all gasoline/rubber at first, gradually gave way to classic German Riesling tropical fruit and citrus aromas over a few hours. On palate, after just opened (and at cellar temp, 50-55 degrees) seemed both thin and low on acid, then transformed into something awesome after half a day of air and at room temp- delicious, concentrated but not too weighty tropical fruit and green apple flavors, the kind of electric acidity I love in great Riesling, a super long finish that creeps into every corner of your mouth. Off dry. If you are opening this now, I suggest you give it at least a few hours of air and drink it just below room temp, at 60-65 degrees. (1864 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 8/27/2016 & rated 97 points: Amazing !!! This is singing absolutely fantastic . The best bottle of this wine so far. Needed the time and still benefits from air. Mature riesling at its best !!!!! (2291 views)
92 pts (2536 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 6/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Very mature bottle !! ?????? Not much like previous bottles !! So tired !!?? Hopefully a single disaster !!!!! (2024 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 10/18/2015 & rated 94 points: Electric green-tinged white gold, intense but very youthful; distinctive fruit salad character on the nose, just a hint of spicy wax, mineral depth, many nuances; very flowing palate, ripe acidity, mature but energetic, subtle bitters, relaxed; very good length. Rarely does a wine achieve such a marriage of power and finesse, of weight and elegance. (2229 views)
Tasted by Paui on 6/30/2015 & rated 92 points: clean yellowish to light golden colour, still maturing and in the early days of its drinking window. after opening this wine has minerality, good fruit, lesser acid, the components not yet finally placed but everything is there and expressing itself on the palate. After having let breathed the wine for two hours in the bottle in the fridge, minerality overlaps fruit and acid and dominates on the palate. Will wait until opening the next bottle, 92 for now (1970 views)
Tasted by coremill on 5/17/2015 & rated 92 points: Really needs air, for the first hour it shows some nice ripe peach and berry fruit, but it's oddly soft and diffuse and lacking acid. Eventually though the wine fills out and firms up and acidity turns up, picking up all sorts of intense secondary nuances in the process, turning more citrusy and earthy and pine foresty and floral. This is a big, rich wine, but the extract is amazingly soft and silky, and the length is outstanding. GGs are a category of which I've been somewhat skeptical (I tend to prefer the pradikat wines), but this is a compelling example to the contrary. (2235 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 8/9/2014 & rated 95 points: a Großes Gewächs summernight: a stunning bottle! young appearance, lemon cest on the nose, on the palate this intense mineralic power, some little petrol, tight, still handbrake on, citrus, some mango, spicy, very tasty, midweight body, oranges, needs more time, long+ finish, will keep my last bottle for more than 3 years, ****(*-- +), 94- 96+? (2548 views)
Tasted by sawira on 6/30/2014 & rated 94 points: Brilliant. Fresh and subtle notes of chalky dried pineapple, verbena, chamomile, and very bright sweet white tropical flowers grace this beauty. The superb dry and lingering finish, following the classy and full yet light mid-palate, is what sets this apart and makes this wine work. Better the second night, this is a true keeper, and just starting its run. Perfectly balanced and cohesive, this shows the strengths yet to come with the 05 vintage - strong, perfectly ripe fruit, with the lithe yet substantial structure and class it needs. Gorgeous. (2112 views)
Tasted by Vintomas on 5/29/2014 & rated 93 points: German Riesling Grosses Gewächs & co 2005 (AuZone, Stockholm): Nose with citrus, zest, some vanilla, and developed notes with some petroleum. Dry on the palate with citrus, quite a lot of mineral with a stony impression, slightly viscous mouthfeel, high acidity, and a long aftertaste with citrus and light grapefruit bitterness. A wine with fine balance and good development. 93 p (2349 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 2/22/2014: Rieslingfeier (New York): And I thought that the 2012 Hermanshole GG was showing minerality. Wow. Salinity. This is liquified stone and mineral-rich sea salt. Drinking beautifully, and with a crazy long finish. (2868 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 10/10/2013 & rated 94 points: VinoLaprisco Tasting (Restaurant De Karpendonkse Hoeve *, Eindhoven, Netherlands): Wonderfully classical, stylish Hermannshöhle, a festival of finesse and fragrance. (2736 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 8/17/2013 & rated 94 points: Kelly’s visit, two nights of great wines - Burgundy and Rhone (Marks duckhouse, Falls Church, Va): Sweet yellow fruits, crème bruless, anise, limestone and a hint of burnt sugar. Some spritz that blew off, oily texture masks strong mineral expression, some sweetness via layers of concentrated fruits but the finish is quite dry. It reminds me a bit of ZH Brand but a bit more mineral and a bit more dry. It would be a nice wine to try at home over a few hours, perhaps with a simple roasted chicken. (2733 views)
Tasted by salil on 7/11/2013 & rated 95 points: Fantastic from the first sip, and this just keeps getting better over a couple of hours with air. A vividly smoky aroma leads into a palate that's incredibly complex with layers of stone, ripe fruits, higher toned floral/herbal elements and more mature smoky and creamy notes all coming together into a seamless whole. The balance is incredible, a broad, powerful palate presence that still comes across remarkably light and precise, and great length. (2203 views)

Rockss and Fruit (3/23/2009)
(Donnhoff Hermannshohle Grosses Gewachs) The nose was one note of citrus that so simplistic that one taster commented that the inoculated yeast strain that was used for this wine was particularly dull as all you smelled was dull citrus. The palate was closed, citric, aspirin-like, acidic and lacking any fruit. No elegance either. On day 2 it was a bit more expressive but just lacked any type of distinction. I mean this is one of the greatest vineyards in the world according to many wine people and the last two bottles I have had, dry mind you, were very very unexceptional.

Dönnhoff

Producer website

U.S. Importer (add'l info)

As a help to those who purchase and cellar these wines, let it be noted that the 'Goldkapsule' does not ofen designate a higher quality bottling from the producer Dönnhoff. Herr Dönnhoff uses gold capsules on about 99 percent of the l bottlings of certain richer wines from the vineyards Oberhauser Brücke and Niederhauser Hermannshöhle and perhaps some others. Therefore it is usually unneccessary and misleading to use the term 'Goldkapsule' with Dönnhoff wines, currently. Although, just to be confusing, David Bueker mentions that there may be one or two exceptions, especially in 2001 and 2003 vintages, where Donnhoff produced "white capsule" auslesen from the Leistenberg and Dellchen vineyards (later Dellchen auslesen have gone to the gold capsules - e.g. 2006). To have to list my notes on a Cellartracker page that has a non-necessary and meaningless 'gold capsule' designation is highly irritating for me, as I feel that if I list it correctly it won't even be picked up by a search.

Another example of the confusion above is with the frequent multiple bottlings of Eisweine from the Brücke vineyard. There were at least three bottlings in 1998 and three in 2002. They occur when prolonged cold snaps allow harvesting on successive days. Usually one of these is designated the 'regular' Eiswein and the best one is sent to the Auction. Each typically has a different style. They are informally referred to by the day of the week on which they were harvested. Thus in 1998 there was a 'Samstag' Eiswein, and one for 'Sonntag' and also 'Montag'. The last named is extremely powerful, and extremely expensive; it is the Auction lot.

It is STRONGLY URGED then that when referring to Dönnhoff wines one refers to the AP number If this terminology is not used, identity can be impossible to determine. JHT

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Nahe
