Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.9 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by CreativeCPA on 5/2/2020: Very foggy, rusty, red, brown. Stewed fruit on the nose. It still has some good flavor but is past its prime. Some tart strawberry, a little earth and minerals. Metal on the finish. We enjoyed it but wished we dark it sooner. (524 views)
Tasted by Dbrane on 3/22/2015: Brett and barnyard on the nose. Initially I assumed a (flawed) Burgundy but after the wine was revealed, it made much more sense. The Grenache character was obvious but again this did not made me love CDP any bit more. (2422 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 6/8/2014 & rated 88 points: Forward, ripe and sweet nose of dark fruit, herbs and meat. Not terrible deep or complex but easy to enjoy. (2704 views)
Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 3/28/2013 & rated 95 points: Dark, a little cloudy, garnet and bricking. Nose is reddish fruit, some menthol and herbs and flowers. The taste is big, chewy, black cherry fruit, liquorice, sweet and spicy with some oak too. A really complex wine with lots going on; my last bottle sadly... (3361 views)
Tasted by MLipton on 2/18/2013: Cellar clearance 2013 (our house): A bit more rustic and gamey than the La Nerthe, this had a core of cherryish fruit beneath the smoked meats. This wine seemed at peak right now but has the acidity to age further. (3758 views)
Tasted by lifeattable on 11/30/2012: Smoky, charred nose, pool locker room, tobacco/ash, and just a touch of cherry. Relatively simple on the palate, with lots of acidity and some dark, powdery cocoa on the finish. If you haven't drank by now, get drinking. (3172 views)
Tasted by MissHighwater on 5/6/2012 & rated 89 points: lovely garnet colour with classic 'garrigue' nose. Soft tannins beautifully in balance with plum fruits on the palate. Not the most impressively complex CdP compared to say 1989 Beaucastel but very enjoyable with Roast Lamb. (2071 views)
Tasted by zovizule on 1/25/2012: Nice if not remarkable cdp. Still a bit tight on opening - benefits from about an hour of air - then excellent with roast chicken. (1723 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/28/2010 & rated 92 points: Nice bright color, with aromas of raspberry ganache and garrigue, developing a nice peperry undertone with air. Very well-balanced, with spice, red fruit -- raspberry & cherry, and licorice flavors on the palate. Presents itself well across the palate, ending with an impressively long, balanced finish. (1579 views)
Tasted by mark_m_owen on 10/24/2009 & rated 88 points: Blew off some odour from opening. Decanted for an hour. Cherries and spice aroma. Ripe fruit in glass along with some savoury pepper and tannin in there to give some grip and backbone. Pretty smooth, some astringency, a little acidic and a decent finish. Very nice. (1713 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 12/24/2008 & rated 88 points: -- popped and poured --
-- tasted non-blind over 3 hours --

NOSE: garrigue!; hints of funk, kirsch, and warm cherries round out the moderately expressive bouqet.

BODY: garnet core with burnt sienna rim; color is of medium-light depth; sediment is present; medium-light bodied.

TASTE: a bit austere and tannic, but the acidity isn't completely lacking; olive and leather dominate; fading raspberry chimes in, too. More earthy than fruity; medium-light flavor; 30 second finish. Drink now. This won't blow your socks off, but for $15 it's one helluva drink. I would certainly buy again at that price.

Tasted by Garfield on 7/21/2007 & rated 87 points: A lot of citrus on the nose. Light in style with good acidity and balance. Went well with our Roasted Chicken and Rice dish. (2286 views)
Tasted by stephen locke on 2/22/2007: Easy drinking flavoursome CNDP. Drinking well and should last a while yet. Did improve with time in decanter. (2278 views)
Tasted by Paulo on 12/8/2006 & rated 89 points: Purple-tinged getting muddy before a watery rim. Bouquet of red fruit salad, and faintly meaty. Sweet through savoury structure, then moderate acid and tannins that make the lips smack. Extremely moreish. Herby, spicy, choccy, peppery palate. Finishes with a medicinal flourish which is slightly astringent, but in a good way. Soft and seductive. Lovely. (2394 views)
Tasted by StarV100 on 10/15/2006: Dry, acidic and still present tannins, full bodied, somewhat light on the nose. Initial impression - where's the fruit? This wine seems to have collapsed, and all that 's left is tannins, acidity and alcohol. Not very pleasant. (2761 views)
Tasted by Tad GW on 10/12/2006 & rated 89 points: 50+5+11+16+7=89 (2452 views)
Tasted by SMG on 9/1/2006 & rated 88 points: Decanted for 30 minutes. Some funk on the nose that blew off after about 30 minutes in the decanter. Medium-bodied with a slight bit of bricking beginning to show around the edge. Plumb, cherries, licorice, pepper, earth and leather dominate the nose and palate, but lacked complexity and depth. The tannins are very subdued but I think this wine will still last another 10 years. (2753 views)
Tasted by stephen locke on 5/27/2006: Deep red, sweet nose of black fruits and some spice. Soft in the mouth with lots of fruit and quite velvety. No heat at all for 14% and a long finish- very soft and easy to drink (2748 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 1/12/2006 & rated 87 points: I had a bottle of the Guigal Chateauneuf last evening and so there is a comparison between the two wines that I can draw. The nose of both wines is filled with cherries. The Guigal is more tightly constructed with intense red cherry scents. This wine has cherries and plums with some earthiness on the nose. The taste is likewise compared with the Guigal following through with lush red cherries and kirsch with intense, concentrated flavor. The Font de Michelle has a mixture of cherries, boysenberries, mushrooms and earthiness on the taste. The taste is rougher and less tightly constructed than the Guigal. For my palate the Guigal is the superior wine.

The wine sat in a corked bottle overnight and I tasted it the next day. The nose is fairly open and shows ripe cherries and bosenberries in a more integrated structure than when first tasted. There is also a hint of anise and vanilla present. The taste is more berrylike than cherrylike. The mushroominess and earthiness is not present. The flavors have a medium level of concentration. There is still a fair bit of soft tannins present that dry the upper palate. Well, what a difference a day makes. I would still prefer the Guigal which has more breed and elegance than this wine.  Tasted by johnwine on 9/9/2005 & rated 88 points: This wine is medium-bodied and very delicious. The nose is filled with ripe plums and berries and the taste follows through with this ripe fruit and earthiness. (1387 views)
Tasted by Jeff W on 2/13/2005 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2 hours. Mid ruby. Fine nose of ripe fruit, matched by the palate. Medium bodied with good acidity and ripe tannins to support a long and satisfying finish. The alcohol (14%) shows modestly at the end but it's not obtrusive. On Day 2 it has become tannic, so while it is very open and approachable now it preferably needs a few years. dg- (2873 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 6/3/2003: ($20) Bachelor Party: Pretty, Apricot infused nose. Honey, flowers. Kirsch. Gorgeous, round, lush, silky palate. Not much power or concentration but a lovely wine. Grenachey fruit, dry herb finish. Early drinking. (1510 views)
Tasted by Joe Belmaati on 5/26/2002 & rated 85 points: Dark purple in the glass. Classic aromas of strawberry, candy, some smoky notes and a licorice scent lurking in the background. This wine has considerable tannin to shed and is at least 5 years away from real drinkability IMO. The ripeness of the fruit and the power is not to be mistaken though. The structural skeleton is sufficient to keep this wine going for some years, and the acidity seems well-balanced. However, this wine strikes me as being over-alcoholic, although 14% is wimpy in these days. If all the elements come together at some point this will be a great wine. Until then this will remain a somewhat disjointed effort that merrits a mid-eighties score. (2824 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
