Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 63 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kzkpt on 10/1/2022 & rated 89 points: Very dark crimson to purple, with a good amount of very fine particles throughout, notably sweet fruit, with an acid jolt mid-palate. Tannins fine and somewhat subdued. Juicy, but past its prime and likely will be madierated in a few years. Still tasty if you like it a bit sweetish. (401 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 4/25/2018 & rated 80 points: Last bottle over several years. I would say each got progressively more disappointing. Upon opening, this bottle was major funky, and that funk moderated only slightly over 3 hours. Almost medicinal taste. Down the drain. (1410 views)
Tasted by Goowine on 11/4/2017 & rated 93 points: Delish (1322 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 5/22/2016 & rated 89 points: Better than last bottle. Took about 3 hours to open up and actually become drinkable.. (2394 views)
Tasted by cawineaux on 1/31/2016 & rated 89 points: Not much left in the tank. Nose was beautiful, rich baked cherries, a little pipe tobacco, but the palate was thin and weak. A little fruit at first, but faded quickly. (2554 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 6/6/2015 & rated 86 points: Drank over 3 hours and was disappointed. Not at all interesting. Have a few bottles left and hope for better experience. (2481 views)
Tasted by redwiner on 5/24/2014: Too long ago for details, but I recall thinking it was just beginning to peak at 10 years of age. Should go another 5 ? (2585 views)
Tasted by les_the_sailor on 12/8/2013 & rated 92 points: Nice wine. A bit of oak present, but still some fruit as well. (2877 views)
Tasted by bobv on 10/14/2013 & rated 90 points: Smooth, subtle, refined. Soft tannin and flavor. This is a nice drinking cab. (1934 views)
Tasted by FLI on 4/7/2013 & rated 92 points: Surprised at how good this was, especially considering the price. Hint of tomato(?!?) and cherry. Integrated tannins. No "Rutherford dust" detectable, but, who cares! Moderate alcohol 13.7% - a really nice bottle. (2226 views)
Tasted by snaff on 4/6/2013 & rated 93 points: This wine is drinking extremely well right now. Excellent balance between fruit and earthy notes. Long, complex finish. I upped my rating significantly from 2 years ago. (2168 views)
Tasted by gavinesq on 2/1/2013 & rated 91 points: Very smooth black fruit, Tannins are well-integrated. Lots of ripe, juicy plums and typically dusty. Drink it now. I've seen some other notes that say it's past its prime; Not sure I agree with them, but it is definitely *AT* its prime. (1672 views)
Tasted by dontime on 10/24/2012: Might be a bit past its prime. Smooth, ripe black fruit, soft tannins. Very drinkable, but lacks some acid at the back end. If scoring 89-91. (1712 views)
Tasted by Raja on 6/8/2012 & rated 90 points: Singing right now. Low alcohol at 13.7%. Layered structure with soft tannins. (1647 views)
Tasted by redwiner on 4/27/2012 & rated 91 points: Perfect example of Rutherford Cabernet. (1436 views)
Tasted by WI WineLover on 3/5/2012 & rated 93 points: Excellent cabernet that is drinking very very nice right now. WS87? - they got this one wrong!!! (1511 views)
Tasted by mraabpfg on 12/30/2011 & rated 96 points: Great fruit and very soft finish - loved this wine. Drank at Crew @ Grandview Lodge (1490 views)
Tasted by ejca on 11/20/2011: Nice time to be drinking this wine, wish I had more. It is in a really good place right now. (1565 views)
Tasted by dontime on 7/1/2011: Similar note as before. Excellent Cali cab ready to drink. (1837 views)
Tasted by gnr on 5/4/2011 & rated 94 points: Dark and choclatey. W steak. (1963 views)
Tasted by jonradus on 4/3/2011 & rated 94 points: The nose is multi-faceted with blackcurrant, cherry, green pepper, eucalyptus, and a touch of licorice and black pepper. The taste is ultra-smooth with rich cherry, gentle strawberry, and sweet vanilla. The finish is uber-smooth with a little bit of cocoa and super-refined tannins that are gentle, yet prominent. This wine is really really good and I really wish I bought more of it for the $16 price tag. In fact, I wish I would have bought a truckload more. (2041 views)
Tasted by dontime on 3/24/2011 & rated 93 points: Stunning. Beautiful nose of dark fruit, earth and everything in between. Smooth and luscious on the palate with black fruit, coffee and vanilla oak. Best wine I've had in a while. At the state monopoly sale price - can't be beat. (2138 views)
Tasted by Nomadirish on 12/12/2010 & rated 90 points: Let decant for about 30min but this didn't open for about 1hr - think it is drinking rather well right now. Beautiful dark color with a fine nose. Simply drank for a great evening. (2207 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 5/3/2010 & rated 87 points: A delicious, medium bodied Cab from the Rutherford area. (2381 views)
Tasted by Double D on 8/5/2009 & rated 90 points: Nice cab tannins undercontrol and fruity enough, enjoyed with beef and brocoli. (2764 views)

2004 Pine Ridge Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford

Heady sweet aromas of cherry and dried cranberry emerge on the nose, backed by dark cocoa, slight bay leaf and waves of ripe berries and cream. Soft and full upon entry, the 2004 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon offers luscious flavors of cherry, cocoa and briar, with well-integrated tannins and a spicy finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
