Nose was very alcoholic, but a swirl in the glass revealed dense, red fruit. To that end, the palate was more sweet and full-flavored than anticipated. It fades fast, although I did get a little more earthiness on the back end.
A: Med. ruby N: Alcohol, red fruit, rose petal. P: Med. acid, tart cherry, strawberry, and balsamic in a package of light tannin and cracked pepper. F: Light but medium-length finish. Tannin is light but lingering.
C: Palatable and approachable if uninspiring. A fine quaffer that can hold up to heavier foods but not quite the elegance and layering that you might hope to get out of this grape if your familiarity is drawn from Burgundy. As it stood, it was a good match for baked chicken breast topped with a coating of panko and cheese with a side of root vegetables, since the meat was lean and simply prepared yet not without depth, and the sides had some density of their own. A touch of sweetness also offered good contrast to spicy fare. (194 views) |
