Tasted by buckeye76 on 7/5/2019 & rated 91 points: Dark fruits in the nose and flavor, Blackberries, blueberries, back cherries and some earthiness with a hint of spice on the finish. Medium to long finish. (915 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 6/12/2019 & rated 94 points: My last bottle of this incredible QPR Syrah drank with hamburger dish. Super balance with dark fruits, earth, and some spice. No unresolved tannin or puniness. Great wine. (988 views)
Tasted by sw92130 on 3/18/2018 & rated 90 points: Opened with my new Coravin, and was very drinkable and delicious. I will finish the bottle tonight (2 days later.) (1168 views)
Tasted by oaxaca90049 on 2/28/2017: drinking beautifully. I wish I had more. (1412 views)
Tasted by DaButtah on 9/20/2015 & rated 91 points: Deeply satisfying. (2120 views)
Tasted by bdeblank on 4/15/2014 & rated 88 points: Still a great value. Stinky nose, but blew off in an hour or so. After that, a nice Syrah. Still had good fruit, but day 2 was one too many (2551 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 5/20/2013 & rated 91 points: luscious, well integrated with excellent sweet fruit. very very good. (2920 views)
Tasted by hudamang on 4/7/2013: Some funk blew off after 10 minutes in the glass. My friend who isn't a big wine geek said he could actually tell this one was actually a special wine. Told him the price and he said the quality price ratio on this wine makes him want to sign up on the list. I told him Carlisle has never disappointed. (3410 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 3/16/2012: Way too much for us, seemed to be super high in alcohol and had the eadache the next day to prove it. Drank it down fast and it is in a nice drinking window now but go slow!!!!! Savor over two days if you can. (3127 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/21/2011 & rated 91 points: Enjoyed over two nights. Beautiful nose. Was somewhat reductive on day one - but smooths out nicely on day two. Still funky but in a very "Alban" sort of way with black fruit, creosote, tar and spice notes. Palate flavor profile echos the nose. Really digging it. Medium-rich black fruit with juicy acidity providing freshness. More intense on the front palate - kind of fades lightly in the mouth into short-ish, one note finish. But the nose and initial attack is so satisfying and memorable. As usual, great for the price. (2958 views)
Tasted by theferb on 7/17/2011 & rated 90 points: At peak. Ready to drink remaining bottles. (2852 views)
Tasted by treaganjr on 5/10/2011 & rated 89 points: Great bottle of syrah. (2880 views)
Tasted by glaze3 on 4/2/2011: Reductive notes that show more on the nose than the palate, but it still distracts from the wine. Dark dusty fruit that comes across as pretty fat. Drink up, nowhere to go but down from here. (2745 views)
Tasted by Geoffrey Carter on 1/18/2011 & rated 93 points: 30 minutes of air and it was really in a great spot. (2993 views)
Tasted by tim_c on 1/15/2011: Classic Carlisle. Deep concentrated flavors with rare steak on the nose. But, the blend has a lot of Bennett Valley Syrah, which I seem to be loosing interest in. Can't put my finger on what my lack of interest is in Bennett Valley syrah is, but it's there. (2919 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 10/31/2010: Overabundance of Brett leaves me to believe this bottle was flawed. (3167 views)
Tasted by tbone on 10/10/2010: Not the greatest tonight, a little too intense both on nose and palate. Didn't pick up the pepper like others had. Kind of a piercing attack on your senses and maybe wasn't in the mood for it. Recorked and will try again tomorrow. (3176 views)
Tasted by emdub on 9/11/2010 & rated 90 points: Carlisle is turning into one of my favorite producers. This wine was all pepper on the nose with a black berry pie component. Nice big black fruits, black pepper, stems? (3249 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 8/21/2010: I have to agree with the comment Russ made in CT about the aromatics, either a reductive element on this wine, some smoke, maybe both. Certainly showed a good dose of funk and also a broad palate, deep red and black fruit and some pepper. However, the wine seemed a bit fat tonight, lacking some of that edge and spirit it had last year when I tasted it. Basically, it drank kind of singular for me and lacked some of the interest that I have found before in this bottling. Given that, my drink recommendation would be now through 2011. (3424 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 8/20/2010: Pre-Poker Blind and Not (Main Street Wine Cellar, Seal Beach, CA): Reductive nose. Drinks juicy yet tight. Expected something more open and expressive. (4043 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 7/27/2010 & rated 87 points: Blue fruits, dried grasses, orange blossom and lots of beef blood. A pleasing dried herb, garrigue freshness on the palate and through the finish. Smoother than the last bottle but still dominated by reduction. (3709 views)
Tasted by SPK on 7/6/2010: This bottle is in a good drinking place right now. Popped and poured about a third of it and got lots of blue fruit, leather, and smoke that was balanced very well with a good/right amount of acid. Finished the bottle up the next day and it was pretty much in the same place as when I popped and poured it, but did start to pick up subtle white pepper. This wine just sits so nice on the palate. Great wine and a top candidate for QPR of the year. (3963 views)
Tasted by RussW on 6/11/2010 & rated 83 points: Probably the most disappointing Carlisle syrah I have had. Very monolithic with strong reductive notes and lots of heat on the rather short uninteresting finish. (3784 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 6/6/2010 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Note after 3 hours. Black fruits and crushed rocks on the palate. Black and blue fruits on the palate along with a dose of smoke. Nice wine and a great QPR. (3690 views)
Tasted by gdbarton1@gmail.com on 4/22/2010 & rated 89 points: Clear, medium ruby. Blackfruit jam nose. Medium bodied, ripe rich black fruit, dry finish. Straight forward wine, good fruit, dry finish (2660 views)

Winemaker's Note for the 2005 Sonoma County Syrah

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
