Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 2/21/2024: Poured an alarming amber color. Seems like bad storage here, so there's no way I can rate this. Thankfully smelled fine, with aromas of dried apricots, blood orange and dried white raisins. Medium + intensity of aromas. The palate feels younger, keeping the fruit but reverting the condition to merely "over ripe" and adding flavors of fenugreek, powdered mustard, salt caramel, malt and bitter herbs. It keeps the blood orange from the nose, and shows a pronounced bitterness overall that surprises for Riesling. Medium + intensity of flavors.

Medium body with some medium acid sticking around. Nothing special or long about the finish, though. The shocking 15% alcohol is well hidden. This bottle was clearly not stored perfectly; but still, it had pleasantries to offer. (186 views)
Tasted by canan on 6/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Alsace BYO (@ Erik): Lovely and complex green spices with a touch of sweet coconut. It does feel like an old wine and has a touch of cheese, but overall still drinkable and fine. (796 views)
Tasted by dclaggett on 2/18/2021 & rated 91 points: 15.0% abv. My bottle had wax under foil capsule; cork was sound and dry. Yellow gold color. Alcohol on nose, followed by beeswax, apple, tropical fruits, raw oats, burlap. Med+ weight and mouthfeel - viscous texture. Starts dry, coats palate with glycerin that hints of sweetness, but transitions to dry finish that manages decent level of tension and salinity. Palate is vibrant and fresh but disappointingly homogenous, perhaps fighting the high alcohol? This wine still has tannins and backbone to develop further if bottle stored well. 1998 was an OK, not exceptional, year in Alsace, this shows that IMO. (1450 views)
Tasted by jgreco on 2/6/2021 & rated 91 points: This 1998 Zind-Humbrecht is a few years past it's prime, but it is still a lot of fun to drink. Dry apricots, peaches, honey (but without the sugar). Rich, yet completely dry. Great mineral texture and a little smokey on the finish. Very unique. (1409 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 5/6/2019 & rated 97 points: Glorious wine. Deep golden color. The nose is complex and gorgeous with ripe apricot and stones. The palate is the winner here. Layers and layers of flavor. Rich and totally dry. The finish is perfect and full of life. Wow. When good, these are among the greatest white wines in the world IMHO. (97) (1685 views)
Tasted by KristianT on 8/2/2018 & rated 93 points: Gold/amber colour. Honey, apricot and rosehip on the nose (and a touch of mature Riesling petroleum aroma). Layer upon layer of flavour. Dense and fullbodied and perfectly mature. 20 years old now. Will keep but surely not likely to improve. Great bottle of wine and a real treat. (1719 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 1/3/2018 & rated 92 points: Golden color. Grape, honey crisp apple and earth nose. Retrained for ZH yet still with plenty of flavor concentration. Totally dry with plenty of power. Drink up. (92) (1707 views)
Tasted by becassine on 12/30/2015 & rated 92 points: Very dry, but quite strong, and very floral.
l have tried it with oysters but not a good match!
Tried it later with pasta with mushroom, ok but not the best!
I think it should be fantastic with duck liver as an appetizer or
at dessert, even if it is very dry. (2348 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Expensive Winos for dinner (Frederiksberg): A very classic (and classy) Riesling, fully mature, full bodied, rich, long - but dry. There is a mineral core here, that i do love, besides the abundance of fruit. (3450 views)
Tasted by KristianT on 3/8/2014 & rated 94 points: Wow. Yellow golden colour. Beautiful aromas of apricot, tangerine and honey with a touch of exotic spices. Great depth and length. A really fabulous Riesling that drinks great now, but no way near showing signs of decline. (2910 views)
Tasted by solana on 12/30/2013 & rated 94 points: Lemon yellow color.
Deep, rich aromas of minerals, tangerines, Meyer lemon, apricot and musky spice notes.
Full and sleek, rich and racy all at the same time. Meyer Lemon - tangerine flavors expand over the rear palate where they are joined by apricots. The finish is a crescendo of flavor with the musky spice notes growing along with the sense of richness. Minerals are there throughout and a fine acidity frames all the flavors. 1 1/2 hours after opening this wine continues to improve! The 6th of 8 bottles and the best so far. The 15 % alcohol, sometimes intrusive 4 to 7 years ago is completely hidden now. (2858 views)
Tasted by vendange on 7/4/2011 & rated 92 points: Perhaps not as vibrant as past bottles. I am tempted to say drink up, but the nose was better than ever. On the palate there is a slight lack of acidity for the weight and the fruit seems to be fading in favor of spice and prominent mineral notes. (3606 views)
Tasted by Brady D on 3/8/2011 & rated 93 points: Brought by Martin, given air in advance. Served near room temperature. Consumed with various Persian breads, pickles and salad.

Rich honey color. A powerful exotic nose including apricots and tropical fruits. Full bodied. Sufficient acidity with a touch of sweetness. A fantastic oily texture and taste that complements from the nose. Medium finish. Really fun experience.

Why don't I have more aged Riesling? (3209 views)
Tasted by Capt Cutlass on 12/11/2010 & rated 91 points: Tasted blind. Lovely golden amber color. Rich nose of concentrated pineapple and mangoes with gun flint. Slightly sweet showing residual sugar with maple syrup notes but a very satisfying lemon acidity which balances it. It finishes dry and slightly bitter with strong marmalade notes. Given the terroir and the producer I would have preferred a dry fermented wine but I enjoyed the complexity of this semi-sweet style nonetheless. (2659 views)
Tasted by jpijg on 11/2/2009 & rated 93 points: Pale golden color. The rich fruit flavours (quince, mirabelle, mango) aromas are balanced by smoky flintstone caracteristic of Brand terroirs. Also some hints of dried fruits and honey. In the mouth the wine has low residual sugar, but the concentration of fruits flavour enhance the perception of sweetness. Minerality and smoky caharacter are a necessary contrepoint and magnify the complexity. The finale is very long with minerality overtaking the fruit.
Another superb wine from Zind Humbrecht. (2727 views)
Tasted by cfe on 3/1/2009: Strong gold color. Huge nose of lemony granity minerals and fruit screaming Brand. The nose is by far the nest facet of this wine. The palate was quite full bodied,, plenty of fruit, but seemed tired - lacking acidity and complexity. A bit to overblown for my tastes. Opened side by side with a Boxler of the same vintage and site, this wine did not compare well. (2532 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 9/2/2008: Riesling and Rhone (Range, San Francisco): Yellow. This shows some petrol but also yellow fruit tones. Big wine given shape by a bitter, stone fruit pit core rather than high acidity. Lush but barely off dry. I could have been fooled into thinking this was Pinot Gris because of its creamy texture, especially compared to an Austrian Riesling tasted alongside it. Very good but suffers in comparison. I much preferred it to the 2002 which I had recently. (3211 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 6/22/2008 & rated 92 points: EWG Yu Jean Kang’s: Grt stuff; nice nose, flower, slight herbal, dry grass notes, rich, slite petrol, earth, touch old peach; grt bal and good all around. (1381 views)
Tasted by The Klipper on 3/24/2008 & rated 90 points: A bit ponderous for a little Easter dinner, a little impressive. Not my style, and wish I had held it another ten years to take off some of the sugar. (3444 views)
Tasted by salil on 3/19/2008 & rated 94 points: Light yellow colour. This has an unbelievable nose - explosive in intensity and very complex showing tropical fruit, petrol, honey, spice, apricot, white flowers and stones. Medium to full bodied on the palate with a slightly viscous texture and rich flavours of pineapple, apricot, white fruits, spice and honey over rocky minerals. Slightly sweet with enough acidity to keep it in perfect balance and an amazing long finish. (3078 views)
Tasted by AMM3RD on 1/7/2008 & rated 91 points: A wonderful wine, no detailed notes. Rich honey color, fresh fruit, not as thick on the mouth as some, but very elegant. Wish I had more. Drink over 3-5+ years. Recommended...AMM (2896 views)
Tasted by Mike V on 11/23/2006 & rated 90 points: Much less sweet than previous bottles. Clear light color. Nose of apricot. Still with lovely palate of mineral and tropical fruit. medium finish. (3530 views)
Tasted by Jim on 11/6/2004: Stone mineral backbone with tropical (mango, leeche aromas and flavor) long wonderful finish. Straw colored. Wonderful wine with room to age (3832 views)
Tasted by AlexHop on 12/27/2003 & rated 87 points: Doesn't blow me away right now. Mineral, med finish (15 sec), not much fruit and feels a little unbalanced. Try again in a few years (I think I have a few more). Modest nose of apricot & grapefruit. (4061 views)
Tasted by winefool on 3/1/2003 & rated 94 points: Another knockout Brand. Typical perfectly made Alsatian riesling. Rich concentrated fruit flavors, balanced with secondary flavors and acid. Wonderfull with food. 3/03 (3498 views)

Zind-Humbrecht

Producer website
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is one of the stars of the Alsace, in the northeastern corner of France. Fought over for decades by Germany and France, the region, according to Robert M. Parker Jr., “is perhaps the most underrated and underutilized source of great white wines in the world.” Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by Leonard Humbrecht and Genevieve Zind. Their son Olivier is now instrumental in running the 99-acre estate, which the family still owns. Like many Alsatian producers, Zind-Humbrecht makes white wines in varying degrees of sweetness, from dessert whites to very dry wines. The vineyards are planted to 30% Riesling, 30% Gewurztraminer, 29% Pinot Gris, and smaller amounts of Pinot Noir, Muscat, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc. Up to 18,000 cases are produced annually. Many are Grand Crus and single vineyard bottlings.
