Tasted by corkdorkAR on 8/12/2018 & rated 91 points: Solid wine with brick colored rim, medium-high acid, old world style, showing it's age as slightly past peak, delicious well made wine. (1323 views)
Tasted by Tom Myers on 1/2/2015 & rated 88 points: Very smooth but past its prime...would have love to have tried this 5-8 years ago. (2354 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 3/8/2011 & rated 85 points: limited notes though overall i found it over-extracted and bitter (3297 views)
Tasted by nytiger on 1/10/2011 & rated 94 points: Wonderful wine fine color big complex nose cherries, berries figs pine cinamon alspice chocolate, in the mouth wonderful complex flavors and extra long finish, started with 14 bottles and this is my last, certainly was worth cellaring this even though not their top of the line. $19 when purchased (4227 views)
Tasted by cabdrinker on 11/28/2009 & rated 87 points: Nice bottle of wine but heading towards the tired side. Nose was a little funky at first but blew away after 30 minutes. Showed some cherries, wet saddle and spice. Wine was a little thin but fruit was still present along with hints of oak. No tannins to speak of and the finish was short but pleasant. (3379 views)
Tasted by jts_brown on 6/16/2009 & rated 94 points: I am posting this about a month after we drank it but there was certainly lots of life left in this teenager. Not even bricking on the edge of the glass. Very expressive dark fruits. Balanced and never let up during the evening. (3547 views)
Tasted by dclaeys on 12/26/2008 & rated 93 points: Bright color with no trace of brown, dusty Napa Valley nose, and full flavors of fruit, spices and surprisingly lively tannins. Didn't seem 16 years old by any stretch...served with grilled filet and root vegetables, and as the post-holiday family meal progressed, the smooth flavor and finish distinguished this wine: no bumps, heat or tartness, just gentle acids at the finish--vey special indeed. (3542 views)
Tasted by nytiger on 2/19/2008 & rated 90 points: full color, fragrant, fine flavors and fimish (3459 views)
Tasted by tdcd@comcast.net on 2/6/2008 & rated 86 points: Very average (if not a hair below). FIrst instincts were disappointing. However, in time it became decent. (2259 views)
Tasted by nytiger on 11/3/2007 & rated 90 points: Quite nice (3531 views)
Tasted by AlexHop on 7/4/2004 & rated 90 points: Nice, but the fruit has faded a bit much. Still nice medium mouth-feel. (2816 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 6/4/2004: ($60) Napa-Noma Trip: 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot. Slightly mature tasting, but still retains dry herb and strawberry fruit. Soft red fruit. A bit thin. Earth and tobacco. Pretty tasty, bit intellectual. (2157 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
