Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 114 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Old Doug on 5/4/2021 & rated 91 points: Clear, light-medium ruby color; nose of surprisingly young, vibrant fruit with the barest hint of menthol. Palate heavy on cherry - redfruits into plum, some black currant, spicy finish with some cloves in there somewhere, all with a still-substantial acidic backbone.

Tough Wine Department: this bottle never had true climate-controlled storage. In 2012 we moved, and a few cases of wine got stored at a sister-in-law's house. The cases got lost in the shuffle, and spent years in their basement, which included a Georgia summer when the building was open to the elements during major renovations - so a few months of relatively high heat with probably 50 days above 90°F or 32°C.

Tasted by Chrisinroch on 5/15/2017: Still delicious, no sign of fading. Visually Appears to be a lighter style, but really well balanced. Easy to drink. Down to my last one (2396 views)
Tasted by floydtp on 8/31/2016 & rated 91 points: Still drinking well with no signs of decline. (3183 views)
Tasted by dsgris on 3/10/2016 & rated 89 points: Medium ruby, earthy nose. Dry, ripe fruit showing some stemmy tannins. Down to my last two bottles, this has been a good run and a go to wine. Medium body and stony fruit, somewhat restrained ripe plums. (3238 views)
Tasted by dsgris on 12/13/2015 & rated 89 points: Medium garnet with barnyard and ripe cherry nose. Well balanced, light acid, ripe plums with some stone fruit bitters and smooth tannnis. Still going strong and better on the second night. (3502 views)
Tasted by AdamL on 9/5/2015 & rated 85 points: there is a sharpness to the nose and palate that reminds me of cabrales blue cheese on 2 of 2 bottles. Hoping the others show better, but not expecting much. (3534 views)
Tasted by dsgris on 9/4/2015 & rated 91 points: Light garnet, drinking fabulously now for the AFWE bunch, I could be happy if my whole cellar consisted of this wine. Enough body and fruit to satisfy those wanting a little fruit and restrained enough with age for those liking more finesse, showing a little funk and peaty note, as always a pleasure to drink with or without food.  Tasted by grayfont on 7/26/2015 & rated 91 points: My last of 45 bottles over the past 4 years or so, and it may well be the absolute best. Served with seasoned & charcoal grilled tri-tip steak, mashed potatoes, and steamed broccoli. The smoky flavor of the wine really came out against the smoky flavor that the charcoal grill imparted to the meat. The fruit in the wine plays a supporting role to the earth and smoke, but it's still very lively. I wish there was some left so I could buy more! (2340 views)
Tasted by dsgris on 6/17/2015 & rated 91 points: As good or better than before. Showing good fruit, a little light on the acid and tannins. Drank well with a ginger marinaded Copper River Salmon on the Barbie. (2122 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 5/27/2015 & rated 88 points: Yum, fresh & juicy. (2219 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 5/12/2015 & rated 87 points: Clearly Rhone-inspired, a bit funky, raspberry, earth. Mature, drink up. (2135 views)
Tasted by ccotton8 on 4/17/2015 & rated 90 points: This wine is holding up very well. Lots of red and dark fruits, with a nice balance of acid. The body kept building for over an hour, absolutely delicious from pop to last pour (about an hour). This is a great cellar defender, need some more. (1916 views)
Tasted by markandsusanw on 4/2/2015 & rated 90 points: Pop and pour ... Brick red, with a big barnyard funk nose, that's reflected on the palate. Tart, light and very dry, with an almost blue cheese note on the medium-long finish. (NOTE: I say this as someone who really likes roquefort.) A hint of green notes, a little tang, a dose of granite and a big earthy backend. Makes for a very interesting flavor profile. Probably not gonna improve much -- tannins were pretty dusty -- but in a good place right now and a stupendous Berserker Day value. (1965 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/21/2015: Lighter style Rhone wine. Well appreciated by the people that we poured for. Pnp. Great deal. (1732 views)
Tasted by grayfont on 2/7/2015 flawed bottle: corked. bummer. (1828 views)
Tasted by mcsac67 on 7/22/2014 & rated 90 points: If anything this is getting better. If I had anymore left, I would definitely be adjusting the drinking window. Although the fruit flavors have softened a bit, that smokiness on the finish has become more pronounced and is joined by white pepper and a bit of herb. Good acidity and texture and a long pleasing finish. Wish I had more. (2884 views)
Tasted by dsgris on 7/9/2014 & rated 91 points: Medium garnet, roast beef on the nose. Dry, lightly tart medium fruit and body, getting a nice roast beef note to complement the fruit, a fresh red table grape profile. Drinking superbly now with many years of pleasure ahead, no sign of getting to the end of it's drinking window. Getting better with age and still fresh on the PnP. (2653 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 4/20/2014: -- popped and poured --
-- tasted a couple glasses non-blind over approx. 1 hour --
-- 81% Grenache, 14% Carignane, 5% Syrah --

Savory; spicy; fruit is a bit more tertiary than primary; seems to be at its peak right now, but I’d be willing to bet that it would ride in the cellar for a couple more years; expressive; hint of brett?; richer/fuller than the ’98 Clos des Papes opened next to it; very good; two of four preferred this to the CdP.  Tasted by Redrunners on 2/4/2014 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured - enjoyable southern rhone blend.

Solid wine with smooth red fruits - bright raspberry and a little leather.
Good acid balance.

Drinking well now. (2952 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 1/23/2014: This is drinking well right now, even better on the second day. (3070 views)
Tasted by mclancy10006 on 12/10/2013: From Magnum. Drinking very well and fully in harmony. (2466 views)
Tasted by dsgris on 11/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Light cherry red, light cherry cola nose. Dry with soft velvety tannins, light acid. Cherry cola fruit, chalky mineral, medium body. Not likely to get much better, although other bottles improved on the second day, so we shall see. Do not hesitate, drinking beautifully. (2524 views)
Tasted by GalvezGuy on 11/2/2013 & rated 90 points: Very nice nose of bright red fruits, leather, smoke, and game. On the palate bright with red raspberry, leather, hints of cracked pepper. Balanced by bright acidity and nice bit of grip. Probably at peak. Drink them and enjoy. (2426 views)
Tasted by bretrooks on 10/8/2013 & rated 89 points: Not decanted, consumed over two evenings. Recent bottles have been much in line with previous notes from earlier this year: translucent but dense, well-balanced with red berry/cherry fruit notes alongside a darker, smoky/spicy/slightly-bitter character which comes through more in some bottles than others. We've been really enjoying these alongside lighter grilled fare this summer. 88-89ish. (2322 views)
Tasted by grayfont on 7/27/2013 & rated 89 points: another terrific showing from this wine. Soft and generous on the palate, with a soft rich texture and a nice peppery finish. Going strong - no evidence of fading - I'm going to bump my "drink by" date out to 2015. (2548 views)

2008 Dacalier De La Terre

winemaker notes: “Of the Earth” is very appropriate for this sublime blend of Grenache, Carignan & Syrah from the Lake County AVA of California. It pours into your glass with the color and clarity of a beautiful Pinot Noir, but don’t let the translucence fool you. This wine has an earthy aroma of pencil lead, vanilla, strawberry and cream soda. The palate has a nice touch of acid with flavors of granite, slate, anise & spiced chai. As the wine opens up you get fresh raspberries and just a hint of cocoa. Food Pairings: This is a great food wine. It pairs well will just about anything off the grill, mushroom risotto, rotisserie chicken, heirloom tomato salad, braised short ribs, cassoulet; burgers topped with blue cheese.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
