Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 86 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oldwines on 8/6/2023 & rated 92 points: Nice, perfectly aged wine in my cellar since release. Fully integrated oak, fragrant nose with leather a hint of menthol and plenty of red and black fruit. Soft and unctuous, great with wood fire grilled steaks. Fairly long and complex but not quite a fair comparison to the 2001 Cerretalto Brunello poured at the same time. (655 views)
Tasted by kzkpt on 1/21/2023 & rated 93 points: On initial PnP, big bodied, dark fruits, but somewhat sour, drying mid-palate and finish. Red berry nose, with leather, tobacco, and some green elements. Let's see what happens after 2 hours slo ox in bottle.

After two hours, classic mature high end Cal cab. Terrific. (601 views)
Tasted by DavidKehler on 5/15/2020: This bottle has been stored in my cellar since I purchased it upon release. Contrary to other CellarTracker comments on the wine, this pristine bottle showed no evidence of decline. (1952 views)
Tasted by Miamidivorcelawyer on 8/7/2016 & rated 88 points: Drink up, fruit is on the way out (5331 views)
Tasted by Cosmo M. on 6/25/2016 & rated 89 points: Is probably in its last couple of good years. Some pleasant dried fruit flavors, along with a cola-like note that I find common among aged Napa Cabs, and hints of tobacco and smoke. Drink asap if you have any left. (5351 views)
Tasted by nmoreilly on 9/10/2015 flawed bottle: Second one that was bad, one left (5353 views)
Tasted by SanderB on 1/23/2015 & rated 89 points: Mid part of the cork was dried out and brittle, falling apart on opening. Decanted for about two hours. At first there was not much of anything. No aromas, rather uninspired taste. Not bad, just nothing noteworthy. This really needed time. After forgetting about it for most of the night we came back to it. Made a huge difference. Developed into a thick, syrupy cab. Luscious red licorice, velvety mouthfeel. Cedar. Long, deep finish. Worth the wait. (6577 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 7/26/2014 & rated 91 points: Good deep color, good flavor, fresh on the palate. Just what we wanted for a quiet Sat night. (6448 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 3/28/2014: Do not aerate, or you'll miss some of the fireworks (but be sure to decant, there's loads of sediment, then return to bottle). Still medium ruby at the core, but bricked all the way to the rim; this is ready. The first aromas took me back to the tasting room where I fell in love with Stacy Clark's wines - powerful cassis, beetroot, plum sauce and even some sweet hoisin and pipe tobacco. Serious weight upon entry, but also substantial acids to wash it away and keep it clean. Tannins are sweet, firm, and slightly chalky; this has structure, some breadth. In top form right now, having just entered its preferred window, though clearly it will hold for another decade and beyond. Mostly secondary - light tertiary at this stage. EtOH (14,3%) fully integrated, long finish. recommended

Audoze 1 hour, decant for sediment and return to bottle; served non-blind 6 hours later. (4697 views)
Tasted by ShieldsVault on 12/24/2013 & rated 95 points: This was a stellar wine. Minor amount of sediment. Color a bit brown, otherwise score would be even better. (3926 views)
Tasted by mraabpfg on 4/14/2013 & rated 95 points: Crowd favorite, of the 15 wines we had this was by far the favorite (5195 views)
Tasted by Dngrzn12 on 3/9/2013 & rated 88 points: Good solid bottle of Pine Ridge. Was a little past its prime. (3948 views)
Tasted by tnb on 8/22/2012 & rated 95 points: What can you say. One of Napa's best. Tasted well when opened up... (4247 views)
Tasted by gavinesq on 8/10/2012 & rated 91 points: She's a beauty. Nice garnet color and most of the tannins have faded away beautifully, leaving behind dark, ripe stone fruits, especially Bing cherries and ripe juicy plums. Some menthol, eucalyptus and cedar pencil shavings. A little gamey and leathery on the finish. Drinking well right now. (3813 views)
Tasted by bibendumrrb on 6/22/2012 & rated 88 points: Still lots of tannins.

Tasted by Orlandus on 4/20/2012 & rated 84 points: Dark and heavy with a complex overripe peach nose. Very strong and full on the palate, with deep and rich fruit, but not particularly pleasant to drink. Seems more like an old porto than a cabernet. I bought this bottle in 2005 at the winery and have held it in a storage unit at 55 degrees for the entire time, except for a week two years ago. It shows no sign of oxidation, and held up well but with little change after opening-- unusual for a big red wine like this. I would classify this as an after dinner sipping wine rather than something to drink with food. I can't imagine it getting better with more age. (2966 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/21/2012 & rated 86 points: 2001 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon Retrospective (Meadowood, St. Helena, California): Dark ruby color; odd, caramel, brett, berry nose; brett, tart berry, ripe black fruit, caramel palate; medium-plus finish (4077 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 2/1/2012: Aerated 1 hour. Full ruby, slight sign of age, rim still clear. Ever so slightly reductive. Aromas of cherry, red currant, cigar wrapper, oak. Flavors follow to the full-bodied palate; very lively acids. Mostly secondary aromas and flavors at this stage, tannins still full of grip. Sadly, it's not performing as well as it has in the past. I will keep my last bottle for 3-4 more years and hope for the best. Drink thru 2019, 14,3% abv, score: B/B+ (2851 views)
Tasted by Marshmallowman on 12/25/2011 & rated 90 points: A little acidity at 1st but better as bottle was left to breathe. I have one more bottle so I'll have to learn to decant before drinking (2957 views)
Tasted by sedation (yellowgas) on 12/23/2011 & rated 92 points: a very nice fruit driven napa cab. i was surprised by how much fruit remained. nicely balanced, if anything it lacked some depth and finish, but still very enjoyable (2924 views)
Tasted by fhmesq on 12/23/2011: Decanted for about 90 minutes and it wasn't enough. The last glass was the best with loads of chocolate, cherry and raisin. Got better as it sat (about 3 hours total). Last bottle, the previous bottle was better than this,. I'd say drink up. (2843 views)
Tasted by ERx on 11/26/2011 & rated 92 points: 3L bottle: tight upon opening, but opened beautifully over the next couple of hours decanted, dark-dark red garnet, black cherry, cedar, & vanilla. Could have aged at least another 5 years! (3302 views)
Tasted by fhmesq on 11/6/2011 & rated 92 points: Excellent bottle. Was pretty closed upon opening but really opened up over the 60-90 minutes we drank it. A lot of chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, raisin with a long finish. Really nice bottle. (3326 views)
Tasted by JC Cab on 10/30/2011 & rated 92 points: What a beautifully balanced, soft cabernet. Well integrated soft tannins, black cherry, casis, cedar and a touch of vanilla. Medium finish. Served with rack of lamb and the match was wonderful. Will drink this all night long. (3180 views)
Tasted by knlowery on 7/1/2011 & rated 93 points: This was a delicious cab with silky tannins. Pleasant earthy nose with dried fruits and some vegetable qualities. Decanted for only about an hour and drank the wine over the evening. It was elegant and inviting the whole night. (3566 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
