Tasted by Acohen on 5/13/2024 & rated 91 points: Rich dark brambly blueberry and raspeberry (71 views)
Tasted by RichEB1 on 12/30/2022 & rated 91 points: As many know, I love me some age on my Bedrock's. That said, I think this 2012 Papara might be a drink in the near-term wine. Perfectly integrated and drinking well, but maybe a little less exciting than past tastings. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this....but will probably drink my last bottles in the next year or so. (817 views)
Tasted by Acohen on 10/23/2022 & rated 92 points: Dark smokey fruit with brambly blackberry and blueberry (662 views)
Tasted by bavaur on 7/12/2021 & rated 90 points: Brought down to cellar temperature and then decanted for two hours. The nose is extremely subtle but has very clear Zinfandel notes of chocolate, earth and rustic red fruits. Really not that full-bodied on the palate and this didn’t stand up well to a fairly mild spaghetti bolognese. Without food this has a light, contemplative finish. Not bad, but expected some more depth and complexity. (1358 views)
Tasted by Backdoctor on 2/7/2021 & rated 91 points: Drinking well. Red fruits on palate. Easy drinker (1355 views)
Tasted by Sonoma-W on 1/23/2021 & rated 92 points: Quite tasty. Great strawberry fruit; younger tasting than expected. Definitely similar to the Carlisle from 2 nights earlier. (1231 views)
Tasted by eschwet on 12/16/2020 & rated 92 points: Still tight after 2 hours of air. Still room for this one to age. K liked better than the 2012 Carignane. Full bodied. Fruit still forward with spice/pepper. Will revisit in 3-5? Years. (1180 views)
Tasted by Jahull03 on 8/28/2020: in a great spot. settled in, yet still feels fresh. (1220 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 6/23/2020 & rated 91 points: PnP. Ruby to garnet on the edges medium clarity and body. Expressive nose of savory dark fruits some spice. Body is medium full, bright with dark fruits and medium tannins. Finish cut a bit short or would have given it a few more points. Beautiful wine that is drinking well. (971 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 5/5/2020 & rated 92 points: Rich dark red color just beginning to show signs of age. The Bedrock Papera fuses cool climate perfume and spice of RRV Zinfandel and the crunchy substance and savory red fruit of Carignan. Nothing in the Bedrock line up I love more, especially the Spanish Priorat mouthfeel. The 2012 is in a good spot now. (1004 views)
Tasted by Dnacabernet on 12/15/2019 & rated 92 points: This bottling drank very well on night one. Terrific energy, structure, freshness, and fruit. Russian River Zinfandel (54%) dominates the profile. The wine dropped off on night two - still tasty but it lost a lot of the original energy. (1144 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 12/14/2019 & rated 93 points: Just one of many really excellent Heritage class wines from this maker. This is a stunner in the glass! (983 views)
Tasted by oenophilemoose on 12/8/2019 & rated 90 points: Decanted and vigorously swirled. Decent but lacked wow factor. (985 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 10/12/2019 & rated 90 points: Has become much more integrated and somewhat less tannic since previous bottle ten months ago. Still almost exclusively red fruits on the nose and on the palate. Just a little too tannic to be well balanced (wish I had another bottle to try in a year). Medium body at best, with a good finish. Obviously has plenty of life left in it. (972 views)
Tasted by Martin Redmond on 9/18/2019 & rated 92 points: Opaque crimson cole with gorgeous aromatics of leather black and red fruit, white pepper, licorice and baking spice. On the palate it’s full-bodied with ample fruit and balancing bright acidity with velvety well integrated tannins and boysenberry, black raspberry liqueur, black cherry, spice, black licorice plum skin flavors with a long finish! 14.7% abv (1085 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 4/25/2019: This bottle seemed off. (1136 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 3/15/2019 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly forward with all kinds of red and black berries. Zesty and delicious. Love the cracked pepper note. (1057 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 12/31/2018 & rated 90 points: Yummy and jammy old vine goodness. A great wine with food or drinking on its own. (1248 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 12/1/2018 & rated 90 points: Had alongside a 2012 Papera zin from Carlisle. While the Carlisle showed red AND black fruit, the Bedrock was all red, with somewhat less depth. Even after 2+ hours of air, the Bedrock was still pretty tannic.. More significantly, it was somewhat disjointed - fruit, alcohol, tannins, etc. were not integrated into a more seamless whole. All of that suggests to me that it needs at least another year or two in the bottle, after which it may well merit a higher score. (1055 views)
Tasted by jfagan on 10/25/2018 & rated 92 points: PnP. Dark bright crimson with purple tones. Great nose with high-toned notes of spice and red fruit. Very complex. Juicy flavors of red fruit, sweet spice and licorice. The tannins play well with vibrant acidity to carry the flavors into a long, refreshing finish. 92 pts. Drink now to 2023. (1327 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 4/19/2018 & rated 93 points: PnP. Loved the complexity. Red fruit leaning towards raspberry with plums and a dark, spicy component. (1409 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 2/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Dark fruit combine with savory notes to create a Zinfandel based wine that is full of excitement. Wonderful texture and depth. Decanted for thirty minutes. This wine still has a lot of up side, but it is drinking wonderfully today. (1549 views)
Tasted by Curt11 on 10/12/2017 & rated 93 points: Great fruit intensity and acid balance. Brambly black fruit. Still plenty of tannin but has rounded out a little. Last bottle was 3 years ago and this has many more to go. No rush but really memorable now. (1798 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 7/3/2017 & rated 92 points: Maroon in color. 14.7% ABV. Sensational nose of red and black fruits, leather and pepper. Fresh and vibrant with tons of acidity. Rich and plush with fruit in spades. Raspberry liqueur, boysenberries, plums and white pepper on the palate. The finish is long and spicy. For me, 2012 is the vintage where Bedrock took it to another level. Exceptionally well made wines across the board. Drink the Papera over the next 2-3 years. (1975 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 6/8/2017 & rated 92 points: Drank this at a weekend BBQ in the Hamptons. Everyone loved this. Sorry, no notes. Drink or hold. (1860 views)
Tasted by blakel on 3/25/2017: Drank at a dinner party with a large group, didn't get to pay attention, but everyone at the table raved about this. (1712 views)
Tasted by Cmhaggar on 2/11/2017 & rated 93 points: Love love love (1798 views)
Tasted by tomherer on 10/31/2016 & rated 91 points: One glass Coravin access, let breathe 30 mins or so. Red fruited Zin nose, very expressive. Palate is mostly tart and shut down to begin with, but it's unfolding nicely after an hour. Raspberry, licorice, tart strawberry, plum, and a faint hint of coffee and cream towards the end. Acidity dominates the finish. Great wine, and should improve. Still too early to tell, and granted, the blends are a lot different, but the Carlisle from the same vineyard/vintage feels more complete, and would choose it over this one for even money at this stage of the game.  Tasted by RobbieC on 9/5/2016: Vertical tasting of 2012, 2013, and 2014 Bedrock Papaera Ranch. All wines poured through aerator and into decanters 4 hours prior to tasting. All three are still young and not surprisingly the 2012 is drinking better than the '13 or '14. The 2012 had a tad more pepper than the others. The 2013 was a touch more "fruity" than the '12 or '14 and the '13 also showed a splash of strawberry or raspberry that the others didn't have. The color of the 2013 was slightly brighter too. All three have plenty of tannins suggesting more cellar time is advisable. Differences between the 3 wines were subtle and speak to the consistency of the vineyard. All four wine drinkers agreed these are well made wines worthy of the reviews scoring 91+ points. (1809 views)
Tasted by TC16 on 8/14/2016 & rated 91 points: It's from Bedrock, so well made. Nose of dark fruit and brambly goodness. More dark fruits on entry with high acidity. Bramble, iron, and a bit of a gamey thing too. Nice. (1777 views)
Tasted by jeffreylubowski on 8/5/2016 & rated 92 points: Wonderful old vine field blend. Of course zin takes the center stage, brambly blackberry raspberry spice. But the other mixed blacks can be felt as well. High acid, no perceptible heat, and even restrained when compared to carlisles bottling of this historic vineyard. Both do a great job, but this dials down the body and alcohol. Great wine. Will last. (2111 views)
Tasted by EMark on 4/2/2016: Dark plum color. Fruity/brambly nose. Blackberry and plum on the tip of the tongue. Also, suggestions of pepper, anise and cocoa as the wine passes over the tongue and under the palate. Very light on the tannin. Reasonable tannin. Medium finish. (2004 views)
Tasted by David_T on 2/27/2016 & rated 92 points: Aromas of mixed dark fruits particularly blackberry and black currant along with a bit of smoke & grilled meat. The flavors match- dark fruit as well as some soy sauce/umami/grilled meat, a hint of dried herbs along with a bit of heat on the finish. Took a day to open up, medium acid/tannins, tasty and fairly complex overall. (1917 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 2/22/2016 & rated 91 points: strawberry, cherry, rhubarb, lead pencil, crushed brush, very good acidity, alcohol is a bit noticeable but should lesson with time. Very good extraction and depth, this is drinking well now but will probably be best in 2 years. (1986 views)
Tasted by markandsusanw on 1/22/2016 & rated 92 points: Decanted approx. 30 min. ... This is smooth, with up front bramble berry fruit and a dusty spice on the mid. Fruit forward, but not really creamy, this is big, but still somewhat subtle, Zin. Tannins present to add backbone, but not intrusive. All in all, very well done and an enjoyable drinker. Never had a Bedrock Heritage blend that wasn't impeccably made. (1996 views)
Tasted by scott w on 11/29/2015 & rated 93 points: Juicy black and red fruit, spicy, brambly. Great structure should live a long time. Balanced great with turkey and gravy! (2046 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 10/17/2015 & rated 92 points: This is a dark, sleek and classy Zinfandel blend, 60/40 of co-fermented Zinfandel/Carignane according to winery notes from November 2013. It is fleshy -- the Carignane -- but with concentration, intensity, and healthy tannin as well as a characteristic Zin spiciness. The fruit is composed and suggestive, with alcoholic restraint, not overripe. One gets black raspberry, espresso, morello cherries, raspberry liqueur, some bay leaf and earth. Tannins have a pleasant grip, there is very decent finish of some length, and all of us at the table noted how well this wine paired with the grilled steak.

I like just about every Zin in its early prime, and this one is no exception. The acid and tannin should hold this wine together for a while. Best drinking window 2015 to 2020. Abv 14.7%, 92 points.

Note: we drank this side by side with the 2012 Carlisle Papera Zinfandel. When both wines were first poured into the glass (after 2 hours of air), they tasted like the same juice. But over the 3 hour period of consumption, they diverged. The Carlisle is 96% Zinfandel and just 4% Carignane. The Carlisle had a abv of 15.4% and tasted like it. Very dark burgundy color. The Carlisle bouquet was more pronounced, with more black cherry character, fruity roses, and a lovely oaky vanilla backdrop. Not hot but the higher alcohol was noticeable as a discrete component of the aromas. A well made, polished, voluptuous wine, like some of the Turley Zins.

The four in our group preferred the Carlisle as we were winding up our round of various appetizers, but later when we adjourned to the dining table and started on the steak, it was a consensus that the Bedrock was a better partner.

The Carlisle tends toward being a jammy Zin. Still its perfumed aromatics and softer tannins have appeal and it paired well with foie gras and an assortment of soft French and hard Iberian cheeses. 91 points.

Day 2. Both wines still fresh with no signs of over oxidation. The Carlisle has taken on more depth and structure. The Bedrock maintains its elegance and line. Both are really, really good. (1975 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 7/20/2015 & rated 92 points: So much for aging it for a while. Very dark. Juicy black fruit notes with good acidity and decent ripeness. Still very strong on day 2. A great old vine blend from the RRV. (2195 views)
Tasted by DrewWyman on 6/22/2015 & rated 92 points: Dark fruits, lavender hints in the nose. Better day 2 (2363 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 5/2/2015 & rated 91 points: Very fragrant. Nice complexity, the usual Bedrock freshness and acidity with ripe red and black fruit notes. Some interesting lavender and mint notes coming out on day two. This one can certainly age for a while. (2150 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 3/14/2015 & rated 94 points: From one of my favorite vineyards, planted in 1934. 14.7% abv. Dark ruby red. Expressive fruit aromas. Deep and rich black cherry and raspberry on the palate. Long aftertaste. Nice work by Morgan and Chris! (2370 views)
Tasted by ebert on 2/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Very well balanced with a long, clean finish. Should be even better in another 12-24 months (2451 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 1/24/2015: I had only a sip as I was surrounded by drunk lushes, but it struck me as *very* primary and much less complex than the 2011 or 2012 Evangelho and the 2011 Papera. Good, but not exceptional. (2070 views)
Tasted by mpricher on 1/3/2015 & rated 91 points: Really enjoyed this bottling. Classic Bedrock Heritage blend, with plenty of bramble berry fruit, spice, and hints of menthol. (2194 views)
Tasted by Danthejuiceman on 12/13/2014: Terrific nose of cranberry, rhubarb, red fruit skins and pits. A bit sweeter than most from Bedrock but certainly not jammy.
Of course it taste even better on day two. (2250 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 12/5/2014: Purple. Rich red and black fruits, herbs, kirsch, sweet vanilla. Silky mouthfeel, fairly big and rich, but not at all over extracted. Surprisingly approachable medium tannin, very fine; medium acid. Very primary, rich fruit. Quite young. Hold. (2239 views)
Tasted by bcg14 on 11/27/2014 & rated 92 points: Very tight upon opening, but a huge amount of fruit fightning the tannins and pushing toward center-stage. Ripe black raspberry flavors, with blueberry sneaking in on the back end. Clearly too young, with only minor changes by the 7 hr point, but an outstanding pairing with the Thanksgiving feast. (1868 views)
Tasted by Xfactor on 11/19/2014 & rated 92 points: Kind of the epitome of red and black fruit mix, black spices, rich at PnP, yet continues to put on weight. Totally approachable now, but wonder what the future holds. (2115 views)
Tasted by BigSchmove on 11/5/2014 & rated 88 points: enjoyed nice subtle and smooth (2290 views)
Tasted by shaferguy91 on 10/31/2014 & rated 89 points: No decant. (2001 views)
Tasted by RobbieC on 7/4/2014 & rated 93 points: Super! Tastes of dark cherry, cranberry, and dark fruits. Crisp. Smooth wine with fine tannins. Well balanced. With a two hour decant this drinks well now...should be even better in a year or two. (2705 views)
Tasted by Silveradoup on 2/6/2014 & rated 92 points: Definitely young, needs some time (3723 views)
Tasted by haldolugr on 1/11/2014 & rated 87 points: Good flavors but too young right now. (2714 views)
Tasted by DavidDay on 12/31/2013 & rated 93 points: Cherry and blueberry aromas balance crisp acidity and tannins, this one may last a while longer (2664 views)
Tasted by psrv on 11/9/2013 & rated 92 points: Bedrock Pickup Day Tasting (Sonoma): Aromas and flavors of juicy blackberry, cassis, and pepper. Lovely acidity on this, with drying tannins and a long finish. If I recall correctly, this is a 60-40 blend of Zin and Carignan. (3865 views)

2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Papera Ranch

From release newsletter:

2012 Papera Ranch Heritage Wine: 2012 is the first vintage in the three years that I have worked with this amazing vineyard in the Piner-Olivet area of the Russian River Valley that we have been able to coferment the 40+% interplanted Carignane with the Zinfandel to create the Heritage wine: in 2010 the whole vineyard was lost to the extreme heat of August 24th, in 2011 the Carignane just never made it through the soup of October. And thank goodness we got to, as the resulting wine is a truly singular expression of old-vine goodness from the Russian River Valley. It is a bright and beautiful, youthfully rambunctious wine. This will certainly reward a year or two of time-out in the cellar though extended decanting will allow this wine to show well in the short-term. $36

Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Papera Ranch

Bedrock Wine Co. has the honor to receive the diverse Block 6 from Papera Ranch vineyard, composed of about 50% old-vine Zinfandel and 40% Carignan, with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié.

From release email

2020 Papera Ranch Heritage Wine, Russian River Valley
Located at the heart of the Piner/Olivet area of Russian River Valley, Papera Ranch is one of the great crus for old vines in California thanks to the amazing work done by its owner Stuart Coulson, one of the great champions of old vines in Russian River Valley. The wines from this ranch combine the vibrant, blue-toned fruit of the Russian River Valley with the density of low-cropping old vines. Our block of the ranch, which includes eleven different varieties along with a large slug of Carignan, plays up the natural brightness of the site with the added spice and energy brought by the mixed varieties. Papera is like Dolly Parton, Rick Rubin or Quincy Jones: it just produces hit after hit after hit. $45

Papera Ranch

Papera Ranch (Formerly Carlo's Ranch) vineyard is an old-vine Zinfandel vineyard, located on the eastern side of the Laguna de Santa Rosa in the Russian River AVA, Sonoma County, California. Just a stone's throw from Carlisle Vineyard, this "grand dame" of the Russian River Valley was planted in 1934 by Charley (Carlo) Papera. While many old-vine vineyards contain plenty of mixed black varieties, most of the blocks at Papera Ranch are 95+% zinfandel. One block, however, does contain a significant amount of carignane with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Given its cool location, this vineyard is typically picked in late October. These old vines are head trained and dry farmed to produce high quality harvests, resulting in intensely flavorful grapes.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
