 Tasted by oldwines on 12/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Mostly Older Cabernet Franc Tasting (New Jersey, USA): One of 8 Cab Franc’s tasted at my “Mostly Older Cab Franc Tasting”… Double decanted at 12:30pm and tasted from 4-8pm. Nearly opaque dark garnet color. Nose has some new oak influence, lightly herbal, re and black berry fruit. Palate is quite richly textured with spice, boysenberry, black cherry, blackberry and Pomegranate. Soft, well integrated tannin, Medium acid. Long finish. Lovely wine, great with Elk and BBQ Beef Brisket. Consistently one of the top 3 wines for everyone. (795 views)
 Tasted by JonnyG on 4/2/2023 & rated 94 points: I had opened the first of my three bottles of this some years ago and worried that I had held these too long. Now comes this bottle to allay those fears entirely. This was stunner, silky, smoky and nuanced despite its power, with concentrated dark cherry notes, some mocha and saddle leather. Wonderful juice.  Tasted by Hanibal on 10/30/2022 & rated 93 points: Opened at 8AM, decanted at 12 and then served at 5pm... air really helped here. Aromas of red peppers abound. Can't go wrong, very typical cab franc taste. Pencil shavings and black ink. Very long aftertaste. Lots of fruit still. Love Paleo. (1829 views)
 Tasted by Mark van Delft on 7/28/2022 & rated 95 points: Great 100 % CF Super Tuscan: Savory, cherry, green paprika, espresso, olive, cassis, pencil shaving, plum, medium plus body, superb long finish. (1579 views)
 Tasted by Mark van Delft on 12/10/2021 & rated 94 points: Superb CF: paprika, green tapenade, bramble, prune, nice Tuscan acidity with balance of the dark fruit, velvety long finish - 94. Wining with Bas & Derk. (2102 views)
 Tasted by Ramberg on 11/12/2021 & rated 94 points: Another great bottle of Paleo.
This is a modernistic yet very good 100% Cabernet Franc wine.
The 2007 are a very fruit driven vintage in my experience and with the amount of new oak used in the vinification of this wine that is something beneficial.
Nose still dusty and with the green freshly cut grass and herbal notes very typical for Cabernet Franc.
Oak spices, coffee, chocolate, smoke, black pepper, meat and violets, along with loads of dark cherries and blackberries.
Palate shows very ripe dark fruits, spices, paprika, herbs, with hints of red Tuscan soil.
Very long finish with acidity and the fruit in good balance.
This is a silky wine, with lots fine of fruit and a very long life ahead.
Highly enjoyable - a luxurious treat.
Happy to have a few bottles left.

 Tasted by Hanibal on 7/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Unfortunately it was PnP... i think this really needed a good decant. Kept improving in the glass... (2777 views)
 Tasted by bonedoc on 12/13/2020 & rated 91 points: My decanter was dirty, so just popped and poured. Dark fruit, smoke, heat, mint and green pepper. Didn’t show as well as last bottle... maybe bc of no decant. (2756 views)
 Tasted by JonnyG on 12/5/2020 & rated 91 points: My first of three and I fear I’ve held on too long, as the fruit was quite subdued here, with oak by far the most prominent indicator. Still enjoyable, just not profound. I suppose that time could be the answer, not the problem, will have to report back in a few more years. (2379 views)
 Tasted by Mark van Delft on 8/30/2020 & rated 95 points: Excellent 100 % CF Tuscan: love it! vegetal note, green paprika, elegant, green tapenade, mature cherry, medium to full body, great long finish. Families Bo, RJ & Edje over for diner. (2416 views)
 Tasted by Dave Mosko on 8/9/2020: Decent concentration of fruit and tannin w/ cherry and dark plum and a structured package that is built for a 20 year journey. Wasn't really speaking Tuscan tonight. Past vintages have shown well, but while his was a tasty offering, it wasn't representative of the label.
Very good wine, very good experience. Disappointing Paleo (2103 views)
 Tasted by bonedoc on 2/15/2020 & rated 93 points: Took about an hour in the decanter to open up, then was creamy/silky on the palate, w milk chocolate notes and hints of oak. Nicely done, and will go another 5 plus.... (2412 views)
 Tasted by rob.boothe on 1/21/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Deep ruby - no bricking. An excellent showing tonight, with lovely green vegetal notes and heaps of capsicum against a backbone of blackberries, just a hint of blueberry, pepper and a touch of anise. Plenty of life left in this bottle, which was in excellent shape - tannins still firm, fruit remained fresh, and no sign of faltering even 4 hours on when we finished the bottle. (2027 views)
 Tasted by oldwines on 11/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Decanted at 5pm and tasted from 6-10pm and one glass the next morning (had gotten tart and monolithic). Overall this was very enjoyable with grilled steaks and certainly showed as a warm climate Cab Franc. Tasted along side 1989 Monticello Cellars Corley Reserve Cab and 2001 Cosentino Hopes Ranch Estate Cab. This seemed slightly better and darker/richer than my last bottle but had some tough competition tonight. The Paleo was an opaque dark garnet. The nose was fragrant and floral, slightly greenish with eucalyptus then chocolate and dark berries. Nice texture, bright and structured. With air it got quite a bit softer. Palate was stony with blackberry and black plum. Quite layered and complex with a long to very long finish that highlights the chocolate and some ripe blueberry. Still full of life and perhaps better still in the future, certainly as much as 5 years, maybe more. (2270 views)
 Tasted by soyhead on 9/28/2019: exciting wine with great fruit, tannins, and nicely balancing acidity. would seek out. (2073 views)
 Tasted by Yagil on 8/29/2019 & rated 93 points: deep ruby;
med+ aromas intensity of dry black cherries, raspberries, blueberries, oak-vanilla, earth, smoked meat, green bell-pepper, eucalyptus, mint, liquorice;
developing;
dry, high acidity, high tannins, high abv, med+ body, pronounced flavours intensity consistent with the aromas; complexed, harmonious, lingering quality finish;
outstanding!
can drink now - suitable for further aging (2040 views)
 Tasted by RussK on 8/24/2019 & rated 90 points: Russk. For me, it does not live up to the hype. I found it dark, ponderous and Woody. 90+. (1725 views)

 Tasted by Rich S on 5/21/2019 & rated 93 points: Popped and slow ox'd for around 2 hours. Dark crimson color. Great nose of dark red berry fruit, black cherry and plum, a bit of oak spice, some cedar cigar box and some floral notes. Very pretty. Plenty of dark, ripe fruit on the palate along with some rustic, earthy flavors in the background. Medium+ acid and tannin. Great balance. Plenty of structure to continue aging. Really nice wine. (1679 views)
 Tasted by Alex G. on 1/26/2019: Fine tannins and lovely fruit. This was a brighter showing than the last bottle which I also enjoyed. Not a “funky” style of Cab Franc, this is polished and easy to drink with commendable structure.

Opened an hour prior to serving, didn’t decant. (1977 views)
 Tasted by oldwines on 1/26/2019 & rated 92 points: Decanted around 6pm and tasted through about midnight. It is a medium to dark, slightly translucent garnet with a crimson meniscus. It has a really wonderful nose that is spicy, lightly floral, slightly oaky, with menthol, plum and pomegranate as well as a hint of chocolate. The wine has medium tannin and medium+ acidity with medium to full body and a chewy texture. The flavors reflect the nose with a moderately long finish but with just a little tart and bitter flavor. It went very well with a sausage, sage and mushroom tagliatelle I made. (1918 views)
 Tasted by eoinhharkins on 12/31/2018 & rated 95 points: Fantastic, beautiful nose of perfume, green pepper, black cherry, black raspberry, earth and spice, smooth palate with enough structure for many more years of evolution, medium plus acidity, nice tannic grip on the finish (1877 views)
 Tasted by Alex G. on 11/22/2018: Deep red color with some bricking. Typical Cab Franc funk on the nose. Dense and chewy keeps evolving. Decant for a couple of hours before serving. (1843 views)

(Le Macchiole Paleo, Toscana IGT) A unique expression of Cabernet Franc (100%), showing lavender and herbal aromas with a trace of eucalyptus. Blackberry, tobacco, and Spanish black olive appear on the palate. Beautifully balanced, though still young. Appellation: Bolgheri

A beacon of fine wine production in Bolgheri, today recognized as one of Italy’s most important wine regions, the history of Le Macchiole began in 1983 when Eugenio Campolmi, a native Bolgherese, purchased his first vineyard. Together with his wife, Cinzia Merli, Eugenio began his pursuit, based on the philosophy of experimentation, planting many different varietals (Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah…) to discover those best adapted to the microclimate and particular soil of this region along the Etruscan coast, nestled between the Bolgheri hills and the sea.

Beginning with just a few hectares, little by little the estate grew, the winery was built, and in 1991, winemaker Luca d’Attoma joined Le Macchiole, sharing a common goal: to produce an original, perhaps unexpected, wine capable of expressing and celebrating the characteristics of the territory. The winery focused on achieving the purest expression of individual varieties, such as Cabernet Franc and Syrah, atypical at the time in an area predominantly known for its Bordeaux style blends. With its distinct wines and unprecedented quality, Le Macchiole soon joined Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Guado al Tasso as one of the most prestigious estates in Bolgheri. Following Eugenio’s death in 2002, Cinzia took over the reins, moving forward with passion and dedication.

Working closely with a carefully selected team in the winery and the vineyards, Le Macchiole has always been at the forefront of innovation, applying methods including extremely low yields, high density planting, specially designed cement fermentation tanks in the cellar, and since 2002, the implementation of organic farming practices, with the sole objective of strengthening the vine. The winery continues to produce what are internationally recognized as some of Tuscany’s finest wines, confirmed by the numerous accolades received in Italy and abroad, including the Wine Spectator’s prestigious 100-point score a few years ago for the 2004 Messorio.

Today Le Macchiole produces 5 wines: Paleo Rosso (Cabernet Franc), Messorio (Merlot), Scrio (Syrah), Bolgheri Rosso (Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah) and Paleo Bianco (Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc), each with its own personality, an expression of the soil and result of the respect given to the vineyard.

“It is essential to first find balance in the vineyard, only then can we find balance in the wine.”
– Cinzia Merli
