Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 63 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by 41hijinx on 8/16/2020 & rated 91 points: 51% Syrah/49% Grenache, 14.5% alcohol. Mid neck fill. Deep garnet color in glass with thin fading rims. Lovely earthy bouquet. Wonderful "masculine" body on palate. Alcohol does not intrude. No subtlety or finesse just raw power. Slightly beyond peak. No sediment. (1208 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 5/30/2020 & rated 93 points: Pure and elegant red fruit and tarwith focused flavors. Toasty and spicy. Fresh acidity and solid structure. Medium to long length and pleasant finish. (1184 views)
Tasted by casjf on 1/9/2020 & rated 89 points: Getting past its prime. Brash pepper and anise upon opening mellowed away to flavors of pepper and subtle strawberry with the grenache flavors stronger than the syrah. (1304 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 3/31/2019 & rated 94 points: With Wagyu boneless ribeye steak, roast carrots and potatoes.
Opened 30 minutes prior to serving, decanted 5 minutes early. Fine sediment at the bottom of the bottle.
Almost opaque crimson, good consistency to the rim.
Nice fruit nose with touch of tobacco, lovely but with some power.
Smooth, rich, integrated, medium weight. Tannin and acid beautifully in touch. A subtle richness expands with the tasting. Long finish with baking spices and black cherry.
Wonderful. (1450 views)
Tasted by casjf on 3/10/2019 & rated 91 points: Black pepper and black currant flavors were Adm excellent accompaniment to homemade chicken schwarma. Drinking well now! (1459 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 11/23/2017 & rated 88 points: Dark fruit, oak spice, bit of herb. The alcohol has integrated better since my last taste three years ago, but still not quite in balance with the oak and starting to get some drying tannin. (1699 views)
Tasted by jrlamia on 11/8/2017 & rated 92 points: Opened in advance and served with roasted pork, squash ravioli and brown butter. Baked berry nose, smooth, balanced flavors of berry and subtly warm spices. Rich finish. The wine was the highlight of the meal. (1661 views)
Tasted by jrlamia on 11/5/2017 & rated 92 points: Opened in advance and served with roasted pork, squash ravioli and brown butter. Baked berry nose, smooth, balanced flavors of berry and subtly warm spices. Rich finish. The wine was the highlight of the meal. (1538 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 7/10/2015 & rated 88 points: Black fruit and berries on the nose, some liquor notes with time. Palate of dark fruit, oak notes (cedar, some sweetness), bit of spice. A bit heavy-handed on the alcohol. Good acidity, medium (fairly soft) tannin. Not much length. Still young. Will wait on other bottles. Potential for higher score, but I'm unsure of future development. (2930 views)
Tasted by Wliepolt on 6/6/2015 & rated 90 points: Perfect with grilled loin lamb chops. Grilled eggplant, etc. (2733 views)
Tasted by wineshlub on 5/10/2015 & rated 91 points: Opened one hour in advance. Cedar/menthol aroma. Rich flavors of black fruit, spice, some heat. Vanilla, cedar, spice finish. Balanced, well integrated, interesting flavors, some complexity, good staying power.

I really liked this, but would like it better with less heat, which may come with more time. But it's a minor issue, and this is great right now. (2370 views)
Tasted by grayfont on 3/15/2015 & rated 92 points: Love it! Rich smoky nose, a hint of chalk, and some serious power - "rocket fuel" - in the mouth. Man I really like this stuff... (2220 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 1/17/2015 & rated 91 points: With pan fried strip steak, squash and fresh-baked fougasse.
Bottle opened 40 minutes prior to consumption - decanted 15 minutes prior.
Clear garnet, no longer opaque but showing nicely.
Nose was blackberry/dark cherry, and certainly enticing.
Smooth and lively on the palate, tasting of fennel, chocolate, nice fruit, with some acid to make it interesting. Soft tannins in the back. Good length. Enough backbone to pair nicely with the steak. (2464 views)
Tasted by suarezd on 10/7/2014 & rated 88 points: 1 hour of air. Raspberry, blackberry, sour cherry, mild rosemary and meat. Med tannins. (1850 views)
Tasted by Glarange on 9/1/2014 & rated 91 points: Got the bottle @ Ridge in Sta Cruz winery. Picnic @ Ridge overlooking Silicon Valley. (1819 views)
Tasted by Kaynor09 on 8/19/2014 & rated 93 points: Lovely bottle. One of the best wines I've had all year. Blueberry, blackberry, licorice, oak. Really smooth. Perfect time to drink. (1861 views)
Tasted by sirwine on 6/15/2014 & rated 92 points: blueberries and cedar (1963 views)
Tasted by shorty01 on 3/1/2014 & rated 93 points: Absolutely one of the best wines I have had in recent memory. Very generous dark berry fruit with an enticing herbal quality, leading to an earthy minerality make this an irresistable combination. (2013 views)
Tasted by missionpk on 11/25/2013: Better on Day 3. Good fruit/acidity. Classic Ridge oak. Strong tannins and some fun bass notes. Definitely still getting better, but enjoyable now with some air. (1931 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 9/26/2013 & rated 92 points: Really a very good wine. Had with an 06 Dehlinger syrah and the Ridge was a better wine. Deep purple. Average nose. Lots of nice fruit and lingering finish. (2114 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 9/12/2013 & rated 90 points: Still some chewy tannins, but drinking nicely with some air. Held up nicely on day two. Medium-Full bodied with dark fruits, spice and leather. Can go a while longer I think, but enjoyable now. (2134 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 8/7/2013 & rated 90 points: To me, this showed best on pop-n-pour, as the Grenache and Syrah components seemed to both be expressing themselves well on the palate. With air, the Syrah took over - showing some black olive and meatiness - while the Grenache receded and played second fiddle. The nose, however, continued to improve and was beautiful even after 6 hours, when I consumed the last half-glass. (2092 views)
Tasted by sfjosh on 4/27/2013 & rated 93 points: Great wine; enjoyed a couple bottles with friends at Ridge Winery. Immediately bought a few bottles. The wine looks Ruby colored. The legs are Medium. Notes of pepper. The body is Medium/Full. The wine finishes Medium. (2217 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 4/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Very smooth fruit forward Ridge. Deep purple, nice fruit, good finish. Drinking well. (1734 views)
Tasted by PowerSurfer on 4/20/2013 & rated 92 points: YUM! Loved it! Just becoming ready. The Syrah and Grenache fruit components are easily discernible on the nose and palate, and the wine is clearly well-made. Long, complex finish where soft tannins appear. (2042 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
