Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by andtheodor on 3/4/2019 & rated 92 points: My note from 2015 still works for me. Severely mineral, charred meat, scented markers, black licorice, dutch cocoa, sweet clean soil, great acidity, coarse tannin. If this ever manages to resolve some texture it would be great. (1364 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 1/11/2016 & rated 91 points: Similar to my last bottle in 2013, along with other notes I'm seeing here. Lots of sediment, so definitely stand up ahead of time and decant. Aromas of blueberry, cherry, cedar, eucalyptus, and potting soil. Cherries, blueberries, tobacco, and iron on the palate, with medium body and finish, medium(+) acidity, and still a bit of grainy tannin, but not too in the way of enjoyment. Drinking well.  Tasted by andtheodor on 2/20/2015 & rated 90 points: A mix of superfine and chunky/sludgy sediment. Lava, sweet potting soil, smouldering incense, freshly sawn cedar, montmorency cherries, iodine, dried flowers, tar, cocoa powder. Burly, with lots of astringent tannin still, plenty of acidity benefits from food. Very southern Italian. Good. (2289 views)
Tasted by RDHudak on 7/25/2014 & rated 92 points: As before, this held up over night with p[potting soil, tobacco, cherry and pronounced tannins that really made it interesting. The acidity and overall tannic structure were very well balanced and could easily hold up to a bigger, more robust meal. 92+ (2330 views)
Tasted by wirelesswine on 4/15/2014 & rated 90 points: Quite nice, this wine changed a lot after being opened about an hour - it went from somewhat closed and lean to more lush, with cherry and plum and even the tannin seemed more pronounced yet round. An undercurrent of earthiness throughout. Very enjoyable. (2317 views)
Tasted by wari on 1/1/2014 & rated 92 points: This is quite quite good. Good acidity, tannins are smoothing out (1931 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 11/10/2013 & rated 91 points: Had this again tonight with Sunday supper (pasta w/ meat sauce), and this is just a rocking Italian red. I think I was pretty bang on w/ my first review as far as descriptors, so I'll leave it at that. 91 might even be conservative. Yum! (1496 views)
Tasted by RDHudak on 10/15/2013 & rated 94 points: N: Wet potting soil, fresh herbs, red fruit. P: Wow, where do I start? Fresh soil, herbs, licorice, red and dark fruit, cedar. F: Long with great structure, balanced acidity and more of the former flavors. This was a screaming deal from WL. BTW, this bottle was completely clear and had no sediment at all. 93+-94.  Tasted by Grape_ape on 4/15/2013 & rated 89 points: very important to decant this as it has voluminous, sludge-like sediment, never saw anything like it.. reall ynice nose of red fruit, earth, slight florals, leather.. similar flavors on the attack but adds a kind of weird funky flavor I can't place on the mid-palate to the finish that kind of took a bit away from the wine for me... without that note, I'd be buying more. (1196 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 4/6/2013 & rated 91 points: Deep, dense coloring with ruby at the edges. Blueberry, morello cherry, blackberry, eucalyptus, tobacco, earth, red flowers, and dusty cellar on the nose. Really enjoy the nose. Medium to full bodied with bright fruits mirroring the nose, blueberry standing out, earth and oak spice, good acidity, chalky tannins, and medium+ finish. Very nice. Good tonight with a juicy NY strip, but I do think this could sit another year or two. Also, there's a fair amount of sediment, so stand it up ahead of time and definitely decant. 80% aglianico, 20% piedirosso. (1167 views)
Tasted by JJKinch on 2/4/2013 & rated 91 points: Dark fruit (blueberry, cherry), slight anise, nice acidity, lingering
finish. Slight leather, slight earth. (1263 views)
Tasted by JJKinch on 12/6/2012: Dark fruit (blueberry), slight minerality, acidity, lingering finish,
slight spice, slight anise. Really enjoyable. (1209 views)
Tasted by cjsavino on 11/5/2012 & rated 89 points: In the glass a bit muddy in glass with a ruby color, very tannic on the palate, dry leather and dusty (1709 views)

Aglianico

Varietal character (Appellation America)

The Southern Italy Outpost (on the CellartTracker Forum)

Originally from Greece and an early Roman favorite, Aglianico was planted as early as the seventh century B.C. Infused with interesting aromas of plums, raisins and licorice. Dried floral notes flow easily into the medium to full-bodied palate of black pepper, smooth, subtle cherry, and plum flavors.. A stylish, intriguing young red, with fine tannins and a ripe balanced finish.
