Tasted by cos65 on 4/11/2024 & rated 94 points: Not quite brilliantly clear green gold
Huge pineapple and clove aromas and flavors, full bodied, rich, as good as cali chard gets if you appreciate the bigger style. Completely resolved and not reason to wait. (57 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/9/2022 & rated 95 points: Pours a youthful straw yellow- one might guess 2014/2015 based on its appearance. Coconut and tropical fruit with a lovely floral overtone. No hard edges or obvious oak elements; rich and layered and beautifully integrated. A rich melange of tropical and orchard fruit. Lingering finish. Sadly, this was our last bottle. Paired beautifully with soft shell crabs in a light cream sauce over pasta. (1080 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 1/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Friday Night Brown Bagger (R&R's): Double blind. Similar to the first warm up, though a shade or two lighter in color, but with pear and a bit of toast and a subtle lemon undertone. Shows a slight tropical coconut flavor to go along with pear and citrus. I am trying to decide whether we have a two bottle vertical or horizontal. Seemed like the group was split between the two in terms of preference; I preferred the first by a slim margin. 92+. (1312 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/17/2021 & rated 95 points: Light youthful color- you'd never guess this was a 2009. Aromas of pear, apple, citrus, jasmine and peach. More weight on the palate than the elegant bouquet suggests, with a slight toasted richness- marshmallow, along with pear and citrus. Hints of mineral in the finish. Drink now-2025. (1599 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 9/25/2020 & rated 95 points: Popped and poured. This is in excellent shape. Gourgeous nose of white flowers and pear. The palate is still somewhat youthful! Layers of flavors of pear, Granny Smith, lemon, marmalade and mineral comes through. The wine has excellent acidity and energy and finishes long and satisfying. This was much better than the 2009 cuvee indigene I had recently. (1716 views)
Tasted by Brian Love on 8/7/2020: Delish (1696 views)
Tasted by Empirate on 5/23/2020 & rated 96 points: Successful in being hedonistic while balanced with tropical spectrum fruit and toasty oak influence all mellowed and integrated. Was an auction purchase and a chance to see how Sir Peter's Chardonnays do with age. Reassured that we can let our mid twenty-teens continue to rest. (1540 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 2/16/2020 & rated 93 points: Brioche, caramelized citrus lead the way as tertiary characteristics are at center stage. The fruit is playing a nice supporting role. Wonderful depth and texture. The aromatics so wonderful. At age eleven, this wine delivers the “X” factor I seek. Great juice. (1454 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 1/2/2020 & rated 96 points: Pale color, showing no signs of age. Pear, fig, melon, honeysuckle and mineral aromas. Melon and pear, with hints of spice on the palate. Long finish; well-balanced. In a terrific place right now. Two bottles remaining in our cellar will be queued up this coming year. (1530 views)
Tasted by The Cellar at 924 on 12/20/2018 & rated 93 points: Vanilla, butterscotch. A terrifi wine. Very enjoyable with broiled salmon. (1805 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 5/22/2018 & rated 89 points: This bottle may have been a little off. Light golden colour. The nose is not very noticeable. The palate is melon, white pear but it has a certain hollowness and a touch of heat. Overall this wine just doesn’t come together properly and the alcohol overwhelms the fruit. (2227 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 5/7/2018 & rated 92 points: Light to medium golden. Fully mature but not over the hill. Requires about twenty minutes of ox to open. Lovely floral and minerally nose. The palate is fleshy and delicious. Apple, white pear, honeysuckle, vanilla. The oak is a little overbearing though and doesn’t integrate with the wine perfectly. (1923 views)
Tasted by plitton on 1/31/2017 & rated 91 points: Reserved and a little tight. Even as it warmed up from fridge temp it was less expressive than prior bottles. Still quite enjoyable (3169 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 11/10/2016 & rated 89 points: Napa Valley Master Class with Robert Parker; 11/10/2016-11/20/2016 (Napa Valley): Oh boy, buttery, rich Napa Chard here we go! This is very heavy on the palate with lots of alcohol, volume and fruit. Well made but not my style at all. Score higher if you like these types of Chard. (4887 views)
Tasted by NY Wino on 8/19/2016 & rated 94 points: Great nose of lemon, butterscotch and stone. The wine is full bodied, mouth coating and rich. Great fruit followed by a long caramel finish. (3044 views)
Tasted by weinmatt on 8/19/2016 & rated 92 points: Happy birthday to me! In to the secondary. Citrus, butterscotch, honeysuckle, sweet oak. A little tang. Wants food. (2545 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 7/11/2016 & rated 94 points: WineFest in Toronto (Mike Grammer); 7/10/2016-7/12/2016 (Mike Grammer's (parents home) in Toronto): I really enjoyed this one. The nose is almost sweet. Lemons, vanilla, honey, slightly smoky. On the palate, great texture. Complex, deep with precision layering. Some lemon cream and spice. Great acidity. Still seems young but really exciting. Long finish. (3988 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 7/9/2016 & rated 94 points: Nutty with honeysuckle notes, smoke and spice. Obvious pedigree with regard to the complexity and lasting finish. (1486 views)
Tasted by JulianSkeels on 5/1/2016 & rated 95 points: Nice and rich in the mouth and showing some oxidation. Nuts, savory and saline. Lingering stone fruit and slate finish. Just lacks a bit of bredth in the mouth. One bottle was a little tired, needing to be drunk by 2020. A second bottle with Sir Peter was much fresher with a bit more time left. (2193 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 1/30/2016 & rated 91 points: White burgundy-sequel. Not overly oaked, but lasting solid finish (2125 views)
Tasted by Sixchips600 on 11/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Had with flight of white Burgundy. Clearly riper California fruit, which is a well made wine with nice elegance and texture. Silky. We all preferred the minerality of burgundy on this occasion. (2264 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 6/26/2015 & rated 92 points: Terrific (2471 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/13/2015 & rated 93 points: Time to Taste 2000 Bordeaux (R&D's): Bright and airy; notes of crab apple, lemon blossom, white peach and quine. Slight hints of vanilla and butterscotch on the palate go along with the orchard fruit and wet stone qualities. Terrific intensity across the palate with a lengthy finish. Well-balanced and very enjoyable despite its youth. 93+ pts. (3208 views)
Tasted by matthewmallon on 5/11/2015 & rated 93 points: Citrus, melon, and a hint of baking spice. Nice balance and minerality. Oak is very subtle. Drinking quite nicely. (2275 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 5/1/2015 & rated 92 points: Passion fruit and melon notes are delicious. Graceful and balanced. A bite of spice on the finish. Impressive. (2107 views)

Peter Michael

Producer website

The Peter Michael Winery is the California outpost of British-born Sir Peter Michael who has shown a Midas touch for selecting brilliant winemakers, including Helen Turley, Mark Aubert, Luc Morlet and more recently Luc’s brother, Nicolas. The consistency of these offerings from the cool climate hillside vineyards in Knight’s Valley and the Sonoma Coast has been respected and cherished by each of these winemakers... All things considered, Peter Michael is one of the reference point wineries in California.

2009 Peter Michael Chardonnay La Carrière

Winemaker's Notes:
The signature of this vineyard continues to be its terroir-driven minerality. Aromas of pastry, lily, hazelnut and sweet pear alongside accents of mandarin orange, honey, acacia and sweet vanilla complete the elegant bouquet. The magnificent concentration and elegance on the palate sculpt the structure of this wine, offering intensity and richness. Its bright acidity and minerality will allow it to age for two decades, much like its Burgundian cousins from Puligny-Montrachet.

Wine Information:
Harvested: September 7, 2009 to September 21, 2009; 100% naturally fermented using native yeast. 100% barrel fermented in 100% French oak from artisan coopers. Barrel aged sur lies 12 months with weekly bâtonnage. Bottled unfined and unfiltered February 1, 2011. Alcohol: 15.0 %. Release Date: April 1, 2011.

Winegrowing Notes:
La Carrière, French for “the quarry,” aptly describes this vineyard’s bowl shape and its tremendously rocky soils. Situated between 1,200 and 1,700 feet above sea level on steep mountain slopes exceeding forty percent in grade, the vineyard has ideal southern and southeastern exposures. The vineyard’s shallow rocky soils provide excellent drainage, low fertility and usually the lowest yields on the estate. La Carrière, with its concentrated “liquid minerality,” effectively reflects its mountainous origin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
