Tasted by der Schmecker on 10/20/2020 & rated 91 points: Super smooth delicious easy to imbibe wine that glides along on a single taste dimension. Yes! This is a terrific rendition of carignane. I doubt anyone else in the world can make a better carignane, but it's carignane which simply doesn't have the lift and complexity of other varietals. Bravo! I'm really happy to drink this because I knew beforehand the limitations of the varietal and am impressed by the craftsmanship of this wine. (1692 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 3/1/2020: Consumed over three nights. Wonderful wine. Dark fruit. Acidic. Mineral. Was much improved on the third night. Many years left in this. Wish I had more. (1661 views)
Tasted by rama on 10/9/2019: Dark fruited, bold and full bodied with nice acidity to keep it round. Starts out like a zinfandel field blend but, but instead of a sweet fruity finish, you get salted blackberries and wet stones. Savory. (1799 views)
Tasted by jmw17 on 4/27/2019: This is gorgeous now. Red fruit, clay, rusticity. Very clean finish with some walnut skin and talc. Perfect for the table. Take me to the river (2043 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 2/26/2019: Slow oxxed for an hour.

Aromas of black cherries, crushed rock, wood, and tar. Very, very interesting. Had with a gras fed strip and it went really well. Full bodied, the wine starts of fruity and moves to a nice bright acidity and crunchy finish. Very youthful. I would like to see this again in another 4-8 years. Awesome stuff, a little new world, but still not as giving as a lot of Napa producers today. There was some real mineral to this wine... (2028 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 7/19/2018: Blind Wines In The OC (The Winery Restaurant in Newport Beach, CA (The OC)): Poured blind. The aromatics painted me a picture of something I thought was going to be bigger and riper than I usually prefer, and included a whiff of alcohol or something in that vein. Dark berry, spice, with acidity popping through too and yet I was left with a conclusion that the wine just was out of balance for me. (2497 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 7/19/2018: Served blind. Nose of dark cherries and chocolate. Bit of heat. Ripe and Juicy. Modern Napa-ish. Darkly fruited with a lean grip. Touch of alcohol. Didn't see this one coming at all. I thought Chris was telling us he liked modern Napa Cabs. I've been told Sandlands is a more traditionally styled producer. And I've been interested in Carignan for quite some time. Could be in a clumsy phase if I want to make an apology for it. (1818 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 6/13/2018 & rated 89 points: Crimson in color. 13.8% ABV. Savory nose of black fruits, flowers, earth and pepper. Light and somewhat rustic. Black cherry, iron, raspberry and earth on the palate. The finish is long with drying tannins. Interesting for what it is but in this case I'm not sure I prefer Carignane as a stand alone as opposed to a component of a more traditional field blend. Drink over the next 1-2 years. (1677 views)
Tasted by Richard P Howden on 6/19/2017 & rated 91 points: Very good. Rich cherry and red fruit nose -- fruitier than I expected. Lots of fruit on the palate, and after an hour or so opened up with more minerality, zest and pepper. Medium weight, very enjoyable. Looking forward to my next bottle. Unlike other reviewers, not a lot of tannin present. (2092 views)
Tasted by Anthonut on 4/6/2017 & rated 88 points: A lighter, zippier red, that benefited from some decant time. Hints of dark fruit lie behind a strong acidic and tannic backbone. (1938 views)
Tasted by Tubulus on 1/3/2017 & rated 90 points: I enjoyed this though it needs some time, not sure why I opened my second of two bottles. There is a not a ton of fruit, it's sort of brambly, almost like a DCV zin, definitely some sour acidity and tannic structure. I think this will be great in 5-10 years. (2247 views)
Tasted by EMark on 11/28/2016: Lightly fruited nose—red berries--with some dustiness. On the tongue, again, a light hit of red raspberry very (very) little suggestion of fruit sweetness. In fact, if anything there is more a suggestion of viney bitterness. Medium-bodied. To me, this one is fairly light on tannin, and the acid seems more sour than tart. I enjoy it, but it doesn’t show me any complexity that makes me think “great wine.” (2009 views)
Tasted by tthorn on 11/16/2016 & rated 91 points: Young - would suggest continuing to hold. Opens up after about an hour. (2176 views)
Tasted by Tubulus on 7/21/2016: Relatively meaty, balanced tannins and acidity, dark fruits, I think you could definitely hold for a few more years. (1962 views)
Tasted by THECORKDORK on 5/15/2016 & rated 89 points: Deep and meaty with strong violet and black plum overtones. A very impressive carignan, however my heart is still with the Mataro. (2006 views)
Tasted by rc@ughey on 5/11/2016 & rated 90 points: Hard not to love this. With crunchy red fruits, fine tannins, and bright acids, this has impeccable balance and loads of charm. (1916 views)
Tasted by DRS-Inc on 3/25/2016 & rated 91 points: Tart black cherry, raspberry, earth, herbes de Provence, and hint of mineral. Fine grainy tannins, crisp acidity, mid bodied and a moderate finish. (2291 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 2/29/2016 & rated 90 points: Bright juicy fruit. Quaffable and easy going like a Beaujolais, but a bit more savory and extracted in its composition. Nice QPR (2101 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 2/8/2016: better balance than the first vintage of this I tasted, pleasant juice (2120 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 1/13/2016: Opened this last week (Friday) originally and whether it was the wine before or the food pairing or whatever just really didn't love it. Popped the cork back in and stuck in the fridge for a few days. Pulling it out again now and it feels like a totally different wine. The first day I got alcohol and acid. Now I get the acidity but it is nicely balanced with a darker fruit flavor (bosenberry, blueberry) and some more earth tones. It's crisp in the finish and one of those wines that I think of as 'clean'. Not overdone or over-extracted. Well balanced. Meant to pair with food although ok to drink as a pre-dinner glass (which is what we did tonight). Glad that we tried it again. (2070 views)
Tasted by Curt11 on 1/7/2016 & rated 90 points: Agree with previous notes that this feels like a hybrid of a Southern Rhone and a Cru Beaujolais. Not much experience with Carignane on it's own, but this was very enjoyable for the price. Liked it best on day 1 with about 30-45 mins of air. 90-91 (2090 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 12/31/2015: Easy drinking, juicy bright fruit, really nice but perhaps bordering on simple, however its so tasty its hard to put down. (1919 views)
Tasted by Foster on 12/27/2015 & rated 90 points: My first Sandlands red. Beautiful medium bodied, refreshing with medium plus acid. Juicy red fruit with gripping tannins. Everything in nice balance tonight! (2834 views)
Tasted by Martin Redmond on 12/15/2015 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby color with appealing blackberry, red berry, cardamom, and crushed rock aromas. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with ample fruit, lively acidity, and well-integrated dusty tannins, and blackberry, black cherry, and raspberry with a pleasing bit of minerality, and a giving spicy finish. Gulpable, delicious yet showing some complexity. Fruit from Ukiah Cemetery vineyard - a head-trained and dry-farmed vineyard was planted in 1953. (1922 views)
Tasted by christyler on 11/6/2015 & rated 90 points: A well balanced wine. Has all of the CA sunshine and fruit that you'd expect, but there's a nice verve and acidity to balance it out. (2138 views)

Sandlands

Producer website
Sandlands is the personal project of Tegan and Olivia Passalacqua. The line-up encompasses the forgotten classic California varieties, primarily grown in decomposed granite (sand), from regions and vineyards that have been farmed for many generations but have remained the outliers of California viticulture.

Primarily head-trained, dry-farmed and own rooted, the vineyards we work with harken back to California’s roots of exploration, wonder, and hard work.

Carignane

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
