| Community Tasting Notes (average 87.6 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by NiklasW on 1/19/2012 & rated 89 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Nose is pleasantly meaty and dark fruity, at a very nice stage at this moment, quite rich on the nose, and definitely needed the decant. The palate is also pleasant, with gritty tannins, good fruit and nice meaty touch to it, a slight sweetness to it, quite a full-bodied wine and very Syrah. Yummy now! (3696 views) | | Tasted by JohnSh on 8/25/2011 & rated 89 points: Notes from second night open. Deep brick in colour. A basic nose, with ripe plums and smoke. Medium-full bodied on the smooth, velvety palate. Again, fairly simplistic on the palate, but there's very tasty plum, cherry, chocolate and herbs on show. Quite rich for a 2006, but not quite over the top. Solid CDR-V, and good QPR. Ready now, but will last a few years yet (B+). (3652 views) | | Tasted by NiklasW on 2/16/2011 & rated 86 points: Bought this a couple of years ago and it's been in the cellar since. Popped and poured allowed to open up in the glass for about 20 mins. A very dark red, almost black. Initially rather acrid and restrained, but opening up into smoky bacon with underlying black fruits, also somewhat of a green streak in it (in a nice way). The palate is also fairly restrained, with good tannins, some fruit, but not very much and an acidic bite to it. Quite full-bodied despite my description, but not sweet at all. Gained weight with airtime. Very CdR, and quite nice. Used some for making boeuf bourgoigne. (3881 views) | | Tasted by JN on 1/2/2011 & rated 89 points: Evolving nicely. Hair better that 2007 vintage - propably because chapoutier is no expert on fruity Parker-monsters of 07. Great example of smoky but still silky style of Rhone. Classic Chapoutier. (07 Bila Haut is great too, but don't try Chapoutier's 2007 Gigondas.) (4067 views) | | Tasted by SingleSpeeder on 10/9/2009 & rated 83 points: Enjoyed it, worked well with greek food, but have had better at price point. Didn't have a chance to let it open up, so maybe would have been better with a longer decant. (4317 views) | | Tasted by Yiannis on 8/14/2009 & rated 90 points: Ruby-purple. Kirsch fruit, black pepper, blackberries, some leather and pronencal herbs on the nose. Mid-full bodied and round with solid but soft tannins, rich fruit and balancing acidity. Long, peppery finish. As with most Chapoutier wines, this stands above its price and status rank, being closer to a Chateauneuf du Pape than a CdR villages. (2026 views) | | Tasted by Yiannis on 2/23/2009 & rated 89 points: Shows nice and clean aromas of currants, violets and black pepper. Mid-bodied and round, with soft tannins, good fruit and nice acidity. Fairly long, spicy finish. Very food friendly and versatile. Great value. (2147 views) | | Tasted by Viini-Viren on 11/29/2008 & rated 91 points: Ripe fruit, rich flavors, great wine. (2223 views) | | Tasted by NiklasW on 11/18/2008 & rated 87 points: Tasting through 3 cheap Chapoutiers; 11/15/2008-11/18/2008 (Home): Decanted for an hour. Appearance: a dark red with a violet edge (4/5). Nose: very reticent at the moment, even after an hour’s decant, some blackberry and a hint of leather in the background. After three hours beginning to open up with very nice smells of round blackberries and leather in the background (11/15). Palate: nice taste, sour cherries with quite a bit of tannins to hold up the wine, finish very pleasant with blackberry staying behind on the tongue. After three hours the taste has also rounded off with more blackberries coming through and tannins softened up (15/20). Overall: one more Chapoutier, and of the three I’ve had in the past couple of days, this is certainly the best, La Ciboise coming out second, and the Belleruche as a far third. All three are marked by very reticent noses, which is a pity, as the underlying aromas are quite nice and would merit a higher score if they came out more strongly (7/10).

(2190 views) | | Tasted by Viini-Viren on 10/4/2008 & rated 90 points: Impressive. Ripe fruit and wonderful aromas of roasted grapes. Very tight tannins are softened by red meat to provide a great experience. Good value for your money. One to two hours of decanting will soften the tannins and make it even more approachable, should you not have a juicy steak to do the job. (2147 views) | | Tasted by GregGH on 10/3/2008 & rated 84 points: did not get any better on day 2 -- pass on this for any future purchases
Added note -- away on day Three -- tried on Day Four .. . thinking I would have to throw it away -- gee ... getting better ... how long can you hold this open ?? (2175 views) | | Tasted by Viini-Viren on 9/28/2008 & rated 89 points: Fruity and full bodied. Very tight tannins at the end. Good value. (2152 views) |

Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.
A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
