Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 85 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JMellet on 4/1/2022 & rated 99 points: 12 years of age is nothing for this wine. 20 it may be hitting its stride. Beautiful balance. (1144 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 7/16/2021 & rated 93 points: A heavily weighted syrah Rhone blend, this is a lovely wine that is tasting rather well now with great potential for further development. (1379 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 5/21/2021 & rated 93 points: Tastes even better the second night. (1353 views)
Tasted by brianofthevine on 3/23/2021 & rated 94 points: 60% Syrah/30% Grenache/10% Mourvedre. Blackberry, boysenberry, and blueberry fruit. Notes of black licorice, earth, minerals, tobacco, and savory herbs. Gorgeous balance of fruit and secondary flavors right now. Still has firm acidity and a great long finish. In the zone right now but easily be held for longer...a beauty after 11 years. (1627 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 3/17/2021 & rated 94 points: These wines are fantastic with age and air! (1412 views)
Tasted by JRockEsq on 4/4/2020 & rated 93 points: Started drinking after a little more than an hour of air and enjoy over the next 3 or so hours. Started at 60 degrees.

Look: deep purple with lighter edges; many medium speed legs

Nose: scorched earth, graphite, blackberry, a hint of flowers

Palate: blackberry, earth, oregano, forest leaves, bay leaves, a bit of flowers, pepper, and a hint of leather... fruit becomes more intense and pure with more air; long- finish of earth and bay leaf; medium+ to full- body; medium dusty tannins which smooth out nicely with air; medium acid

Overall thoughts: While I admittedly prefer my GSMs to be fuller-bodied, this is a great wine with great complexity and very good concentration of flavors. I think it really hit its stride after 2 - 3 or so hours and likely still hasn't hit its prime. (1440 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 4/3/2020 & rated 93 points: Drank over two days. Purple medium opaque full body. The nose is big with dark blackberries with spice and licorice. The body has red and black fruits with some brightness and moderate smooth tannins. Medium to long finish. Loved it. Had with a Sicilian pasta. (1206 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 1/13/2020 & rated 94 points: Outstanding. Drinking very well. (1149 views)
Tasted by Babik on 11/29/2019 & rated 92 points: Decanted 15 mins. Sweet smoked blueberries, seaweed, chocolate caramel on the nose. Palate has lost some energy. Some dusty tannin at the end a bit higher than expected given loss of acidity at this stage; still really nice though. Drink now. (1499 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 11/16/2019 & rated 93 points: Not bad just a touch “cocktail” and high alcohol for me. Just might not be in the mood for this at the moment. (1215 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 8/12/2018 & rated 94 points: Gave this a few days, tasting over that time. It stays meaty and rich. Tannins softened up some. Still very big rich, full bodied. Good stuff! (2204 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 7/29/2018 & rated 94 points: Second time I Coravined a glass from this bottle. I tried it against fried chicken and the saltiness bothered the flavors a fair amount. It was better later by itself. I especially noticed more heat this time. Still really like it. (2009 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 7/27/2018 & rated 95 points: Opened via Coravin, reddish purple. Delicious aromas of dark fruit, menthol, smoked meat and wet stone. Still young, brisk tannin, moderate oak, blackberry, some heat but sufficient acidity to balance and brighten the flavors. Packed with flavors, excellent Paso Syrah. (1880 views)
Tasted by Sniffy-Sniff on 5/26/2018 & rated 93 points: Had the delicious factor going for it. Plenty of tannin and structure on the finish. Outstanding QPR at $55. Wish I would have bought more. (1524 views)
Tasted by sayward on 1/26/2018 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 1.5 hours and then returned to bottle and consumed 1.5 hours later. Big nose and finish still has some tannins/chalkiness from wood. Wish it was smoother, but then it would not taste this youthful after 8 years. (1922 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 10/15/2017 & rated 92 points: This bottle was tighter than last one. It has a few years, but is great now with a bit of air. Reidel Syrah glasses (1674 views)
Tasted by Castle Peak on 8/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Similar to earlier notes. Quite tasty. 😎 (1576 views)
Tasted by EvanJB on 7/8/2017 & rated 94 points: Excellent, still has nice fruit, great balance, mouth feel ,long finish (1824 views)
Tasted by Jonathan T on 7/5/2017 & rated 94 points: Fantastic. The descriptors are the same as my note in 2015, but I think it's even more composed and integrated than it was two years ago. For the 2010 vintage, I think I prefer the Banshee over the Akasha, even though Akasha comes from a more heralded vineyard. If I were to taste this blind, I would guess Saxum and I would place this among the top third of all the Saxum's I've ever had. And for someone who's been on the Saxum list since the 2003 vintage, that's saying something. Despite the 15.5% alcohol, it doesn't taste hot, but I do feel a little woozy after a couple glasses. (1849 views)
Tasted by Les Kangas on 5/21/2017 & rated 92 points: I believe it has hit its peak. Reidel Syrah glasses, no air. (1620 views)
Tasted by The Wine Write on 4/29/2017 & rated 93 points: PNP at restaurant. Good from the start. Plum and black cherry aromatics. Fine tannins. Luscious, soft texture. Nice fruit, but not a bomb. Finish is long and pleasant. Delicious, interesting wine. (1718 views)
Tasted by cpsmith33 on 1/22/2017 & rated 92 points: Very nice Paso blend. Syrah dominant. Dark fruit, meat, chocolate. Went way to fast..another 1-2 years would probably be even better. (1488 views)
Tasted by STM82 on 1/19/2017 & rated 94 points: Drank over two nights. Notes are from the second night. Nose of licorice, asphalt, cured meats, olives, and black berries. Similar notes on the palate. This has rounded out nicely. Meatier than I remember. It should continue to impress for another 5 years. (1398 views)
Tasted by sayward on 1/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Similar to previous note. (1295 views)
Tasted by jhieb on 12/17/2016 & rated 94 points: Drinking really well now, and could still improve a bit. Loads of chocolate, dark fruit, and a little chalk. (1316 views)

2010 Torrin The Banshee

Source: 100% Torrin Estate
Blend: 60% Syrah / 30% Grenache / 10% Mourvedre
Production: 266 cases bottled
Production: September, 2013
Winery Comments:
Once again The Banshee is the wild one of the bunch. We’ve got a west facing block that we have planted to Grenache and Mourvedre. We chose to use tall stakes and tight spacing to incorporate a bit of a modified head train system. This allows us to really be selective when deciding which clusters to drop based on their position in the canopy and amount of sun exposure. As a result we get fantastic maturity without excess shrivel and raisining and therefore lower sugars. This expresses itself as briary fruit over layers of dried herbs and spice. This hillside makes up 40% of the blend with a cool north facing hillside of Syrah at 60% providing the framework around which the Grenache and Mourvedre weave their magic. For 2010 the Grenache and Mourvedre were co-fermented with roughly 40% stem inclusion and aged in 320L and 500L puncheons. The Syrah was fermented separately with around 30% on stems and aged in 228L barrels. Really wanting to let the fruit and spice shine through we limited the new oak to around 25%. Once the blend was made in late August, the wine was returned to the barrels from which they came and remained on their lees until bottling mid May 2012. This wine is scheduled for release September 2013. With the extra time in bottle we expect it to be showing quite nice, but like all Torrin wines it will no doubt age beautifully.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
