Tasted by Rodenbach99 on 4/23/2024 & rated 87 points: Robe jaune dense. Nez de diacétyle, popcorn, beurre, souffre. La bouche est marqué par le bois (elle ne le supporte pas) le beurre et le souffre. Surprenant. (501 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/17/2024 & rated 92 points: White fruits, minerals and toast in the bouquet. Same on the palate, citrus, flint stone, well dosed oak. Beautiful and complex wine. (682 views)
Tasted by jocelyng on 1/27/2024 & rated 87 points: The nose is very promising but the mouth does not follow. Excellent flavors but too thin to have a higher rating. (904 views)
Tasted by MeasuredTime on 1/25/2024 & rated 90 points: This didn't seem to have a lot going for it at first but after an hour it provided subtle complexity of stone fruits and a bit of butterscotch. (864 views)
Tasted by Rond on 12/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Asian pear, almond, and lime zest. Pleasant. (968 views)
Tasted by Tim336 on 11/18/2023 & rated 92 points: Fans of top-flight Aussie chards go for a Leeuwin Estate or Tolpuddle, which are both outstanding, but a Shaw + Smith M3 is not too far behind both and a terrific value at under US$30. Linear, with peach and beeswax notes, it's just crisp enough and just mellow enough to go all right with just about anything. When I can find it cheap, it's the new house chardonnay. (1081 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/8/2023 & rated 92 points: The bouquet is a bit reticent but shows some butter and elegant oaky flavors. On the palate focused citrus acidity, butter, minerals, peach, a touch of sweetness and pleasant bitterness in the finish. Beautiful and well balanced wine. (595 views)
Tasted by ziavino on 9/2/2023 & rated 92 points: Dueling extremes, with intense notes of tart apricot and unripe pear countered by heavy oak. Lively acidity too, and while this seems linear (for now) it's still pretty damn tasty, and should improve. (1400 views)
Tasted by WineDoctors on 6/21/2023 & rated 91 points: A short finish chablis (1448 views)
Tasted by richard.presser on 2/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Rich, complex nose.
Full flavoured right out of the gate, held in check with balanced acid. Good length. Persistent flavours. Made to drink well young but should age nicely. Surprisingly approachable. An excellent M3. (1906 views)
Tasted by Cremuel on 7/28/2022 & rated 87 points: Light golden and bright. Grippy pears, white peaches and light buttery nose with citrus spritz. Opens with a light butterscotch wash, fine citrus acidity running through it, supported by white peaches and biscuit grip of light tannins. Not too deep at the moment but good. Probably too young and has the structure to be fine. (1902 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/22/2022: Pure white peach and green melon fruits on the nose and in the mouth. There's a touch of spice and excellent intensity of flavour at its core. It has excellent shape and a finish that is precise and full of citrussy goodness. A very classy M3. (1719 views)

BEGINNINGS

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realise a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, M3 Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and Pinot Noir.

MICHAEL HILL SMITH MW

Michael Hill Smith was the first Australian to pass the rigorous Master of Wine examination. In 2008 he was awarded an Order of Australia for his contribution to the Australian Wine Industry. Featured on Decanter Magazine’s power list 2009, 2011 and 2013. Michael is an international wine judge, wine consultant and strong advocate for Australian fine wine both within Australia and internationally.

MARTIN SHAW

Martin Shaw is a winemaker with considerable international experience. He graduated from Roseworthy College in 1981 and worked with Brian Croser at Petaluma for eight years prior to setting up the 'Flying Winemakers' network in France, Spain, Chile, Australia and New Zealand.
Martin continues to consult to a number of companies within Australia and overseas.

Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tasmania is a remarkable place to grow grapes, so in early 2011 we set off for a look and ended up buying a vineyard. The Tolpuddle Vineyard in the Coal River Valley was planted in 1988. The climate is cool and dry - ideal conditions to grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of exceptional quality. We believe Tolpuddle will be a great Australian single vineyard.

The vineyard takes its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs:
English convicts transported to Tasmania for forming an agricultural union.

Shaw and Smith Chardonnay M3 Vineyard

The Story

The Shaw + Smith winery was built in 2000, providing the ability to whole-bunch press chilled grapes for the first time, and underpinning the evolution of style from that first M3 Chardonnay vintage in 2000 through to the present day. The most significant event since then came in 2012 with the purchase of the Lenswood vineyard. Chardonnay was originally planted in Lenswood for sparkling wine production but it now fulfils its potential for fine still wine, with finesse, flavour, and great natural acidity.

Growing and making
From Piccadilly, Lobethal and our Lenswood Vineyard, at 455–500 metres elevation. Undulating with east and west facing aspects, the soils are brown loams over clay with broken shale on the ridges. The vineyard was planted in 1999. Hand picked and whole bunch pressed. Fermented and matured on lees in French oak barriques and puncheons.

What to expect
Aiming for elegance, restraint and the ability to age, acid is bright and there’s generosity of flavour. Typically it shows white flowers, citrus, and nectarine notes.
