Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Nutty08 on 7/29/2022 & rated 93 points: A little band-aid on the nose but there’s lovely aromatics of tobacco leaf and green herbal notes. Palate is crisp, fine, ans a bit of spice coming out as the leather, tobacco and herbal notes repeat on the finish. Quite nice. In a good spot. (767 views)
Tasted by Cazoterica on 7/23/2022: Still drinking well, supple and deep fruit. (526 views)
Tasted by SteveG on 10/30/2019 & rated 92 points: From memory, darker than most CF we drink, fully ripe with just a pleasant hint of greenness, fully mature but still vibrant, delicious with lamb chops. (2214 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 2/23/2018 & rated 92 points: Fascinating, enveloping, and different in profile from almost anything else we drink. Like a sanguine cushion of candy cane with wild weeds, dried herbs, and spice. One of those incredible wines that risks disagreeability. A quick decant does wonders. (2278 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/26/2017: Breton Bourgueil Perrières Vertical (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco): Light, browning. Very bell peppery nose. Brown spice, stalky, artificial sweetness (chaptalized?). Earthy, dry finish with some brett showing. Completely unappealing. (2850 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 1/26/2017 & rated 92 points: Breton Bourgueil Perrières Vertical (Arlequin Wine Merchant, San Francisco): Nicely intense with sappy fruit and plenty of vegetal verve. Hints of roasted meats. The body here is held in the thinnest, most transparent sensory casing of peppermint candy cane. Long and exciting. Likely to hold or even improve for a couple of years. Drink now-2023. (3073 views)
Tasted by MartyL on 12/16/2016 & rated 91 points: Echt Cabernet Franc. Tobacco leaf, cassis, some green pepper, velvety palate presence, good acidity. delicious. (2366 views)
Tasted by salil on 9/24/2015 & rated 93 points: Fantastic bottle of Cab Franc. A bit more funk and brett here than I typically expect from Breton, but the fruit flavours still come across remarkably bright and fresh, and it's a wonderful wine to sit down with. An array of fresh dark berried fruit, more savoury earth and herbal notes, and some more developed leathery and funky notes on the nose all coming together seamlessly on a graceful, medium weight frame. The tannins seem fairly light and mostly integrated into the wine, and a lot of the structure here seems to come from the lively acidity. Good length, and it's a wine I kept returning to throughout the tasting. (2191 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 9/24/2015 & rated 93 points: TTTG (Loire blind tasting): Immediately won me over and easily the wine of the night. Rich nose with ripe red fruit, herbs, green peppers, and just a bit of earth and funk. Very sappy, with a long finish. Yum! (2613 views)
Tasted by cse on 5/5/2015 & rated 92 points: beautiful. demands to be consumed in small sips, which unfold as they wash around the mouth. a big sip and all the detail is lost to the slightly gritty finish. (1242 views)
Tasted by nefarm on 11/27/2014: First varietal of the day. Missing the expected vegetal component. Fresh. Surprised by the tartness. Still, it's good. (1264 views)
Tasted by JBVino on 10/4/2014: solid bottle but not extraordinary. decent mouthfeel and length to the wine but w only ok texture and wine lacked a more complex flavor profile. Secondary flavors were basically absent. 93 bottle of this wine consumed recently sang with flavors of earth, funk, smoke, etc. (1253 views)
Tasted by mmurry on 2/22/2012 & rated 92 points: Decanted about 1 1/2 hours. Still quite a bit of red fruit on the nose, mixed with some green vegetables, a hint of spice, and some earth at the end. Soft on the palate, with loads of green vegetables and some cherry and raspberry underneath. The mid-palate and a little spice, and it finished with some dirt and wet leaves. (1689 views)
Tasted by pdxwineguy on 1/29/2011 & rated 91 points: Still tightly wound and earthy. Opened some but seed like the vintage had less to offer. Still good but would be curious to try in 10 years. (1700 views)
Tasted by rhit on 11/8/2010: This wine took some time to open up, and didn't give up too much when it did. Stemmy red fruit and gravel, with a somewhat fresh, if watery, texture. The tannins eventually gained some heft, and some apple skins appeared by the second night. Maybe it was unrealistic, but I expected a bit more energy from this. (1900 views)

Professional 'Channels'
By Jon Rimmerman
Garagiste (7/30/2010)
(BRETON Les Perrieres) 1985 Breton et al Dear Friends, This one’s for “Brooklynguy” and the wine geek faithful and it’s a doozy of a mixed 4-pack. The wine geek crowd has a bad reputation – they reside in Fort Greene or the Mission – they have to scrape together a few extra centimes from their rusty Vespa just to afford a bottle of declassified de Moore Chablis, etc, etc – of course, this generalization (while true to a certain extent) is far from accurate. We are all Wine Geeks – Park Avenue or 17th and Dolores. The uniting factor? Wine and the vivid curiosity it instills in all of us. As Americans, we may not have the longest vinous tradition or the most admired gastronomic culture in the world but we sure know how to nod our head in appreciation for something that could not possibly be produced on our side of the Atlantic. Case in point – aged Loire Cabernet Franc - an oddity of eccentric brilliance that few on our side of the water have had the chance to wrap a mineral crusted embrace around. Today’s offer is rare – very rare. It is a direct cellar release of old vintages of Breton’s most treasured Cabernet Franc – Les Perrieres. Bordeaux may lay claim to some of the world’s most famous growers of Cabernet Franc but its holy grail lies firmly in the narrow belt between Chinon and Saumur, with Bourgueil directly (and eccentrically) in the center. Say what you will about Catherine and Pierre (the current generation at Breton, this is not Guy Breton) but their vineyard work and methodology have inspired hundreds (thousands?) of would-be natural winemakers from every corner of France and beyond. They are the “coolio” patron saints of the natural age in winemaking and the rock-solid purity (no pun intended) achieved in their wines speaks for itself. No longer a part of Louis/Dressner (a big mistake on Breton’s part), the cellars in Bourgueil have been opened and today’s mixed four pack is the result (it took all of one day for this four vintage vertical to sell out at Breton – we secured it a few months ago). It gives the wine enthusiast a glimpse into the history of the region, the past generation at Breton and of this specific parcel of Cabernet Franc that is among the most admired in all of France. As far as I'm concerned, no astute wine collection is complete without a stash of cellared treasures from this emotional red wine region of the Loire. Here you go... ONE SMALL SHIPMENT ONLY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a one-off peak into a world that is mostly unknown to North Americans – the world of aged Chinon and Bourgueil. This parcel has impeccable provenance and all four vintages should continue to ascend their peak drinking window for another decade (decant all four vintages at least two hours in advance). I can only imagine the tasting dinners that will ensue... Domaine Breton Bourgueil “Les Perrieres” 4-Pack - Four bottles in each pack: 1 – 1985 1 – 1993 1 – 1996 1 – 1999 Please give us your maximum number up to 3 x 4-packs (12 total bottles) and we will allocate accordingly (if we run out, the winery still has some 1985 available for individual sale but I believe the other vintages are gone). To order: niki@garagistewine.com This parcel is on the water – it will arrive in the late summer (please check OARS for local pick up in September). It will ship during the Fall shipping season. Out of state orders will be held for free under ideal storage conditions (56 degrees/70%humidity) until shipping is possible. Locals may pick up at their leisure.
