Tasted by Mark1npt on 10/18/2023 & rated 95 points: Brought by the birthday boy, Leon to the table tonight. Pnp'd tableside and decanted for about 45 min before we started in on it. Dark purple in the glass, no bricking or aging notes colorwise.

Nose was a tad muted but had sweet dark red/black fruit notes prevalent. The palate was full of smooth, integrated dark red fruit, great depth and concentration. It's fully integrated and in its window. I don't know if it gets any better from here. Borders on a 95 for me tonight....beautiful. (1271 views)
Tasted by bobvictor on 8/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Rich and luscious. (292 views)
Tasted by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on 12/2/2022 & rated 92 points: Purchased at restaurant and drank with steaks. Good find amount the slew of many, many more recent voyages on the menu. Even after 16 years, this thing is still quite powerful, but at least the TA IMS have resolved themselves. Well structured and a good complement to the food, but a bit too alcoholic (15.5%) for my liking to drink without food. (689 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 12/2/2022 & rated 92 points: Tasty wine, well built, but a little strong in the alcohol and menthol components from the nose. Just not really my style of wine at the moment. 91-92pts (656 views)
Tasted by Sfflyer123 on 12/27/2021 & rated 98 points: Incredible wine. What a true "amazing" Napa Cab should taste like. Beautiful, soft blue fruit, supple tannins, hints of spice and earth, a touch of minerality, and mild acidity. This is an amazing wine and worth the price. 98 pts. (1035 views)
Tasted by ewits on 7/5/2020: Excellent. Balance. Fruit forward. Light finish. Great with rib eye (1677 views)
Tasted by Pmgrossi on 7/5/2020 & rated 96 points: Excellent Cali cab
Perfect drinking window now
Black fruits, cedar, complex. Long finish (1397 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 6/1/2020 & rated 94 points: 15.3% ABV. I let it breathe for 2 hours then drank over 2. Consistent w/past notes, a ripe, concentrated wine, with mild licorice on the nose and sweet notes of cola and cedar on the palate. The acidity is noticeable particularly on day 1 (less noticeable on day 2). In fact, for me the wine was better on days 2 and 3. Needs a lot of time on the bottle. (1217 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 3/16/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted for about 2 hours. Still some sharp and choppy edges on this one. Tons of milk chocolate, sweet cherry, and anise. It comes of a little heavy and over extracted but does get some lift on the finish with a cool graphite note. I’d drink these in the next 5 years. (1702 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 11/30/2019 & rated 96 points: 15.3% ABV. I let it breathe for 1.5 hours then drank over 2.5. A ripe, concentrated wine, with mild licorice on the nose and sweet notes of cola, blackberry pie, and cedar on the palate. The acidity is noticeable mostly on the long, juicy finish. The tannins are resolved. Really hits its stride at hour 3 so if you can wait that long you should. I've had many Hobbs wines and this is one of the best. (1274 views)
Tasted by Red Sox Fan on 11/23/2019 & rated 96 points: We opened a 2005 Araujo Eisele and a 2006 Paul Hobbs BTK with great friends last night. They are both great wines and it is a luxury and privilege to be able to drink them. The group consensus favored the Hobbs BTK for being a little more rich and offering more nuance and secondary flavors. Both wines were drinking very well after a 1 hour decant and are well into their drinking window. (756 views)
Tasted by MattB72 on 8/15/2019 & rated 94 points: 6 hr decant and drank over a few hrs with steak. Still just a baby. Need a 5+ more years but was still amazing today. (901 views)
Tasted by webbaker on 2/26/2019 & rated 100 points: Another bottle I pulled from my cellar to take to LA. We drank this at Larsen's in Woodland hills. Large amount of very fine sediment. Another perfect while. Tannins nicely integrated, but still a little chewy. Unlike the Shafer from the night before, this wine had some darker fruit flavor. No sign of burnout, could easily have aged 5-10 more, who knows. Very pleased since the last bottle I'd tasted was flawed. Wow, was this good. I like this one slightly better than the 2007 Shafer Hillside Select, whereas Joe preferred the Shafer. Hard to go wrong, 2 beautiful wines. (1369 views)
Tasted by golfgraeme on 12/12/2018 & rated 95 points: Fantastic California Cab! Big and juicy with smooth tannins and drinking very well. Three of us shared the bottle and all felt this was a very well made wine with tons of power. Will keep the other bottle for a couple more years. (1119 views)
Tasted by robertr on 12/22/2017 & rated 95 points: Tasted vs. 2007 over an annual holiday meal with good friends. 2006 was the favorite at first - black fruit but rounded with excellent integration. A little strong out of the gate and the 2007 became the favorite over the meal. The 2006 has more years to come...but not too many. I would agree with another review that there was something funky (although not unpleasant) as the 2006 opened up. Try again in a year or two. (2068 views)
Tasted by jonleerhp on 9/1/2017 & rated 96 points: Just an absolute rock star. Crime de cassis, spice box, blackberry jam, gorgeous nose and long finish. What you hope for when you pop a Hobbs Beckstoffer. Bright spot in an otherwise dismal week of Hurricane Harvey (2343 views)
Tasted by JTobin on 8/25/2017 & rated 96 points: Decanted for 1 hour. Wonderful bottle of a rich Napa cab. (2262 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 6/18/2017 & rated 96 points: Dark purple. Huge nose of black fruit, graphite, and baking spices. Heavily extracted. Packed with blackberry, blueberry, and currants. The cheese appetizer and grilled NY Strip steak mediated the upfront tannins but they reappeared later. This is everything I expected from To-Kalon fruit, but the wine is still very young, and perhaps still in a little bit of an awkward phase. I will save my last bottle for a few more years but it was a nice treat for a Father's Day cook out! (2579 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 2/10/2017 & rated 96 points: Popped the cork and allowed to slow-ox in bottle in chilled locker for 4 hours before drinking.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Thick legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of sweet coconut oak, cassis, black licorice, sweet spices, sweet earth, mocha, black cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, highly commendable hardly noticeable high alcohol (15.3%!), very smooth and exceptionally soft cotton-like high tannins, concentrated full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of coconut oak, sweet spices, cassis, black licorice, mocha, black cherries, blackberries, blackcurrant. Seamlessly smooth mouth-feel on the mid-palate. Long finish with the lingering soft bouncy tannins. No alcohol heat! Or maybe the full on concentration just distracts you from it?
Outstanding quality. So this is what To-Kalon is about. Extremely rich concentrated ripe fruit style, but commendably I would consider this not overly done. Not like some Aussie monsters that veer into Amarone-like raisinated or even burnt fruit flavour. Lots of obvious oak here that kind of achieves a good balance with the concentrated fruit. I can see this ageing well over the next 10+ years.
Last thoughts: How does a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon achieve such softness of the tannin? Soft tannin is just such an un-Cabernet characteristic. (2836 views)
Tasted by webbaker on 1/4/2017 flawed bottle: Oxidized. (1790 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 11/19/2016 & rated 97 points: Decanted 2 hours a was singing. Very thick texture with molten milk chocolate, blueberry compote, anise, cassis liqueur, glycerin, and sweet oak. Some tannin on the finish. Best wine I've had in some time until I had the 2007 side by side. Has 10 years plus before it peaks. (1824 views)
Tasted by floridawinedrkr on 10/23/2016 & rated 98 points: This is simply ridiculous! amazing depth, smooth, rich, mouth coating, balanced. see previous notes (1776 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 9/8/2016 & rated 94 points: Mostly domestic wine dinner (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner): There is nothing shy about this wine. Pop and pour, incredible youthful pitch black fruits, crmes de cassis, licorice, menthol which I assume reflecting high % alcohol, dark spices, lead pencil, noticeable oak, liquid smoke and earth. With air, it comes together nicely. Exceptional concentration, somewhat monolithic and dense, intense cassis fruit driven palate impression, noticeable but fine tannins and long finish. This is Cab equivalent of the high end Saxum. Clearly those who love and those who hate. It is a really impressive young wine. There is a good freshness so I hope it will age well. I would be happy to have a couple sips but not more at current stage. (2159 views)
Tasted by floridawinedrkr on 7/17/2016 & rated 99 points: I made the mistake of giving this an over night decant. All it needs it 3-5 hours max to be insane. see my previous notes (1797 views)
Tasted by Vineyard Boy on 5/30/2016 & rated 99 points: Give it 2 hours to decant. Fabulously smooth and complex! (1944 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard

Beckstoffer To Kalon continues to receive worldwide accolades for its wines, particularly in the last decade. The vineyard is on a gentle slope on the western foothills of the Oakville appellation. Soils are Bale loam/Bale clay loam, and are impeccably farmed by Andy Beckstoffer’s team. We have a by-acre contract so we can determine canopy, crop load and picking dates – but rely on the Beckstoffer viticulturists for insight into this unique vineyard to guide our decisions. ... ©2012 Tor Kenward Family Wines

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
