(371 views) | | Tasted by mattym19 on 11/17/2018 & rated 93 points: Nose is so expressive and concentrated. Hints of buttered popcorn and seasame give way to golden raisins and figs galore. Palate is amazingly tropical with kiwi, papaya and ripe pineapple. Acidity is beautiful and cuts perfectly through the sweetness. So perfectly balanced, I can’t stop drinking this. Don’t pair with anything—it is a perfect dessert on its own. (597 views) | | Tasted by nigelb on 5/25/2016 & rated 92 points: Lovely balance and texture. Very long finish. But sweet, not off-dry. (846 views) | | Tasted by whitmanlholt on 3/9/2014 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured. This is a deep golden wine. On the nose, there is petrol, slate, and honey. In the mouth, this is thick and viscous, but still fresh and fruity. The finish is like after eating a crisp apple. Overall, this is a good and enjoyable wine, but not memorable. 90 points. (1393 views) | | Tasted by salil on 7/15/2009 & rated 94 points: Thrilling stuff, this is packed with layers of honey-drenched tropical fruits, cherries, yellow plums and limes with intense stony mineral notes underneath. No shortage of acidity here; this feels almost chiseled in the mouth with amazing precision and balance and finishes very long leaving streaks of tropical fruits and minerals in the mouth. Awesome. | Wittmann Producer websiteRiesling Varietal character (Appellation America) | A short history of Riesling (Uncork) | Riesling (wikipedia)Auslese Wikipedia article on Auslese.Westhofener MorsteinFrom the winery: The Westhofener Morstein is a sloped vineyard, facing south. Its soil consists of sandy loam over a limestone base. Its subsoil is strongly influenced by chalky acquiferous layers which act as water veins and turn into wells in very rainy periods. The consequence is a strong humidity in the subsoil, which offers ideal conditions for the rootstock by constantly supplying it with minerals and nutrients. It is this factor which defines the mineral character of the wines from this vineyard. The 2009 Morstein Spätburgunder GG is a wonderful example of this. Dark coloured with brick-red reflexes it portraits vanilla and cherry scents aligned with light notes of spices and roasted bread. On the palate it displays a young, elegant character with hints of peanuts, which bear witness to its 18 month maturation in barriques. This wine has a wonderful creamy textured finish and can be enjoyed on its own with as much pleasure as in combination with meat dishes or strong vegetarian meals. #2014 Vintage Notes: 2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise 2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator "My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)Rheinhessen All about Rheinhessen Interactive map |
