Tasted by Vascular46 on 11/13/2021 & rated 90 points: Deep purple color. Blackberry with hint of licorice. Probably on the downsideof the curve but still enjoyable. (579 views)
Tasted by Vascular46 on 11/9/2020 & rated 91 points: aging well. Still has dark berry fruit and tannins have softened. (826 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 10/28/2017 & rated 93 points: Truly in a great spot right now. Several years of mature enjoyment left. Enjoy! (1780 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 7/29/2017 & rated 93 points: Aging very nicely. Picking up some rich dark red fruit. More rich and decadent than 5 years ago. (1906 views)
Tasted by danscellar on 12/12/2015 & rated 89 points: A dark, inky, earthy Vince petite sirah!! Vince is consistent, last of this vintage. (3346 views)
Tasted by Sugarb on 9/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Solid petite sirah. (3578 views)
Tasted by danscellar on 3/27/2014 & rated 90 points: Dark, rich and earthy!! Not showing any signs of being near the end of its life. Bright red edges and plenty of tannin and complexity!! (3749 views)
Tasted by danscellar on 2/22/2014 & rated 89 points: dark, inky, big and bold. A very nice classic Vince petite sirah (3037 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 9/16/2013 & rated 91 points: The wine is a deep ruby red with some brick at the edge. The comforting nose has tobacco, cedar, baking spices, blackberries, wet earth, and some minerals. This has medium body, soft to moderate tannins and good acidity. On the palate the savory notes dominate with the berries adding nice sweetness. The finish has good length and again leans on the savory and earthy notes with the fruit present but playing a supporting role. This is drinking nicely but I wouldn't hold for more than another year or two before the fruit totally disappears. (3820 views)
Tasted by bound4er on 7/6/2013 & rated 92 points: No formal notes taken - from memory. This is drinking really nicely at present. Fruit plays a secondary role with this wine - leather, cassis and some spice are the primary flavors. Tannins have mellowed nicely and lively acidity is present to add a nice sense of freshness. Well done. (2453 views)
Tasted by RJandGB on 10/13/2012 & rated 88 points: finally finished the last bottle. very good, but really should we have to cellar for 8 years? (2314 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 9/23/2012 & rated 92 points: Really shining through...great friends bought this bottle...they are always invited back! (1719 views)
Tasted by RJandGB on 3/3/2012 & rated 88 points: Still getting better with time but as noted by others, decant and let it open first to reveal the depth of flavors and get past the initial pow of tannin. (2443 views)
Tasted by tcfishler on 12/20/2011: Dark red. Peaty, intense overripe blackberries on the nose, and similarly uncivilized in the mouth, with palate twisting extract though not a huge excess of tannin. Very PS, for lovers of the type. (2774 views)
Tasted by rodsjuice on 12/13/2011 & rated 91 points: Decanted fro two hours. Color deep and dark. Nose is consistent with aroma's of vanilla, cedar, boysenberry. Balanced, smooth, easy drinking. My last bottle. We always enjoy this representation of Petite. 5,14,16,6=91 (2581 views)
Tasted by rodsjuice on 11/2/2011 & rated 92 points: Decanted for two hours. Nose is really nice I always enjoy this wine. Aroma's of vanilla, cherry, oak. Palate is bold. I am getting more of a tartness like cranberry. Leads to a spicy, acidic finish that lingers enough to make you want more. I only have one bottle left. I believe this wine is drinking perfect right now. 5,14,17,6=92 (2596 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 10/7/2011 & rated 91 points: Deep, dark, opaque ruby color. Blackberries, pepper, earthy elements, smoke, meat juices, licorice, and some violets and a hint of eucalyptus on the nose. Medium body with solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. Big, juicy, peppery berries on the palate, still pretty primary. Fairly long finish with just a bit of complexity starting to come out. (2199 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 7/6/2011 & rated 85 points: Past its prime (2503 views)
Tasted by awineo on 5/16/2011 & rated 89 points: This was my next to last bottle of the 2002. It is past it's peak. It is still good, but the fruit has faded and the tannins are pretty soft. I plan to drink the final bottle ASAP. (1455 views)
Tasted by rodsjuice on 3/23/2011 & rated 92 points: Ran bottle through a vinturi into a decanter and let sit for over 2 hours. Ever so slight sediment starting to form in the bottle. Color a dark, blackish purple . Nose, WOW ...was this intoxicating. Strong aromas of plum, vanilla, oak. The palate literally exploded with a mixture of bold flavors. It came across like a subtle port. A great spicy lingering finish. This wine was fantastic and exceeded my expectations. The best bottle I have had so far. 50,5,14,16,7=92 (2842 views)
Tasted by RJandGB on 3/3/2011 & rated 86 points: This wine is getting there! In a few years our remaining bottles might become awesome. Vinturi - interesting idea and I'll bet work well on this wine. (2712 views)
Tasted by erichbrandt on 2/1/2011 & rated 90 points: After 3 hour stand time the wine came alive. Great fruit on the nose and full in the mouth. Drink now if you have any. (1472 views)
Tasted by rodsjuice on 1/9/2011 & rated 88 points: Decanted for about an hour. This is one of my favorite wines, but tonight it did not show that well. The nose was not as big. The palate was nice and smooth to drink, but did not have that velvety flavor that this wine is known for. Hoping it was just an off bottle. 50,5,12,15,6=88 (3022 views)
Tasted by PSirah Tampa on 12/31/2010 & rated 91 points: Finally coming into it's own. PLENTY of life ahead; still on the upside. (2886 views)
Tasted by rodsjuice on 9/16/2010 & rated 92 points: The bottle was a little cold around 54 degrees and I could not get a good read on the nose when I pulled the cork. I ran it through a Vinturi into a decanter and OMG the aroma's literally filled up the room. The color was deep purple with a small amount of sediment in the bottle. The nose was intense. Predominant aroma of cedar with cherry and cranberry. The flavor profile was full, balanced, like velvet rolling over my tongue, with a nice smooth lasting finish. The vintage/varietal is my absolute favorite from Vincent Arroyo. I bought the last remaining 5 bottles of this when at the winery in April. An outstanding wine ! 50,5,13,17,7=92 (3501 views)

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
