| Community Tasting Notes (average 92.9 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 117 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by RayOB on 9/14/2023 & rated 94 points: Drank at 67 Still fresh and beautiful (724 views) | | Tasted by mchern02 on 12/8/2022 & rated 95 points: 2 hour decant, which was right in the sweet spot
Dark black and red fruit, bramble, strong lift, and great salinity. Tannins are on the sweet side, fully resolved, but layered texture and great length. This was drinking well when opened an improved with time. Excellent (1698 views) | | Tasted by MJReb on 4/30/2022 & rated 94 points: Opened 6 hours before, took a small glass and left the bottle upright until the evening for slow aeration. At the beginning dark cherries and leather, which nearly disappeared and turned towards blackberries. Still quite tannic and structured, but everything is well together, a harmonious ensemble with a lot of class. A decant is nevertheless helpful. (2213 views) | | Tasted by pkouchu on 1/28/2021 & rated 95 points: leather, forest floor, truffle, bitter chocolate, roasted plums, dark cherries, dried herbs, spice box and cedar
fully mature, really great finesse, everything is pretty much melded together (3772 views) | | Tasted by ANWW89 on 12/19/2020 & rated 92 points: not the most inviting on the nose but silky smooth, generous fruit and goes down well. not the most complex but still a good wine. (3552 views) | | Tasted by Sonoffalstaff on 12/6/2020 & rated 95 points: From magnum. Garnet with hints of rose. Spicy rich nose. Rich almost voluptuous mouth feel. Lovely balance of minerals and acidity. Long long finish. A great wine which benefited from magnum and patience (3129 views) | | Tasted by ieatprawnsss on 3/29/2020 & rated 90 points: The nose was lush and complex, dark fruits, spices and leather. However the palate was somewhat disappointing.
The vintage was hot and dry, supposedly typified by winemakers struggling with ripeness. In this bottle, with any trace of acidity completely lacking, fruit and structure have bled away over the past 2 decades.
What is still there is well made - you can definitely tell the quality of the producer. However there is a hollowness and simplicity that does not live up to their usual standards. Still an enjoyable bottle, though! (3286 views) | | Tasted by Rschot on 1/6/2019 & rated 95 points: Oh dear, delicious! Magnum served for Xmas dinner, roll of lamb. Double decanted for 2 hours. Dark and deep color, still Bordeaux color. Voluptuous nose and taste. Forgot to take further mental notes, other than that everyone agreed it was super nice! (4350 views) | | Tasted by punter on 11/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby red color belies the missing nose and overwhelming tannin and some oak that dominated this bottle after a two hour decant. While its juiciness is unable mask the absence of muscle and depth, it may give simply joy for the next 2-3 years. They can't all be as complete as the '97. Try another bottle soon, and drink-up. (3145 views) | | Tasted by Liskit on 11/24/2018 & rated 92 points: Balsamic, liquorice, black pepper, spices, leather, tar, vanilla notes, wet leaves. dark fruits. Medium plus acidity, silky tannins, medium plus body, medium plus finish, dark fruits, drink now, could have better few years ago?? (3149 views) | | Tasted by jsebiri on 10/27/2018: Very good, a rustic claret in character. Glad I kept these after thinking a few years ago they were simple and nothing special. (2978 views) | | Tasted by Goldstone on 10/16/2018 & rated 88 points: Pre-Auction Italian Wines Tasting Dinner (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Deep black-red opaque colour. Nose is light and muted but yeilding little....past its best? Confusingly, the palate seems very young and fruity but nothing very special. I didn't finish the glass and just wrote "OK". Some confusion because I thought I'd been told it was a younger vintage. (2694 views) | | Tasted by iobtoel on 2/24/2018 & rated 94 points: Open nose, fruit forward. Big, bold on the palate, but with depth and finesse. Dark fruit with hints of earthy tones. Long finish. Delicious. (2801 views) | | Tasted by jmoon on 1/28/2018 & rated 93 points: Fully mature. Delicious after a 1 hour decant. Ripe and rich and wonderfully developed (2683 views) | | Tasted by marcusvino on 1/2/2018 & rated 91 points: soft and little bit ripe. For me, it is over the top, but still a good choose, if you like riped wines. (2683 views) | | Tasted by Cailles on 12/29/2017 & rated 95 points: We found this gem at a nice restaurant in a small italian village for 40% less than what you would pay retail these days. Had two bottles with consistent quality. Fully resolved tannins, smooth and silky texture and a fresh acidity. With some time in the glass a beautiful barnyard, forest floor and black truffle smell became dominant on the nose with intense dark fruit underneath. Very powerful palate with just hints of chocolate and herbs adding to the forest floor and dark fruit aromas. An intensifying long and sweet dark fruit/berries finish. These bottles were drinking very well right from the get-go (no decant needed) but I'm not sure how they were stored in the past few years. They were too warm and we had to cool them down before drinking. Hence, there is a possibility that they were stored in a too warm environment for some years and our wine was more mature than bottles from a perfect cellars would be today. 95++ points. (2908 views) | | Tasted by swyang on 11/30/2017: That was a great bottle of wine at its peak. A superb dark violet color and just from the opening very unctuous but not over the top. On the palate it just had such a rich presence of dark fruits, beautiful tannin integrated into the texture, and yet keeping the wine dignified, and just waves of aromas of fruits, earth, (not earthy) very suave, and would even say very sexy. Rich for sure, but it simply was marvelous with a great Bistecca Fiorentina. Sophisticated and yet superbly attractive wine. Yum!... (2809 views) | | Tasted by Sirmika on 8/29/2017: Time to drink. was better younger (2361 views) | | Tasted by cnordstr on 6/5/2017 & rated 93 points: Drank together with Pavie 01, Gruaud Larose 01, and Octavius 02. Ornellaia won, closely followed by Pavie. All good wines of course. 2 days later had the last glass , held up very nice.....nose of roasted plums , a bit more tannic then 2 days ago . (3069 views) | | Tasted by Sirmika on 12/29/2016: Die Flasche hat einen starken Sherrystich. Lecker! (2532 views) | | Tasted by hackey37 on 8/10/2016 & rated 94 points: Pretty garnet-ruby color, clear, bright, and great clarity. The aromas are currants, plum, cherries, flowers, sweet spices, herbs, and vanilla. The tastes are currants, cherries, cinnamon, brown sugar, stone, plum, and cedary notes. The tannins are like rough satin and the finish is delicious and long and laden with fruit. (2354 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |

Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.
Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.OrnellaiaIn 1994 something significant happened for Ornellaia and many of the highest quality wines from Bolgheri in Tuscany. After years of laboring under the humble 'Vino da Tavola' label, these wines were granted a new and unprecedented DOC which not only permitted, but mandated non-traditional Italian grapes. From the 1994 vintage on, Ornellaia has used the DOC Bolgheri Rosso Superiore. [TermOrnellaia (Read more about Ornellaia classification on CellarTracker)].
